Scott I can relate to so much of what you've said .The work and everything that goes into it to give people a quality job consistently and then always trying to improve on that .Then being the boss and business man its incredibly hard work .Nobody realises it and the money you receive for doing all of it doesn't justify the effort. They say hard work doesn't kill you it doesn't it just cripples you as you get older. Always been the same hurdles for me Scott your not alone .Your one of the best out there mate we'll keep in touch ive no dought you'll be a success on the outdoor cooking areas and best of luck. All the best with your new venture and honestly don’t blame you. I’ve lost 3 weeks since last October to bad weather. Don’t know how I’m going to catch that back up. That along with the next clients giving me jip because I can’t start when initially said. Depressing at times
Sounds a bit shit Lee another reason why I can’t do it anymore as there’s to many variables against you and it’s gets you down feck that 💩 I give up with bigger jobs from now on just want to survive stress free. Good luck buddy 🏴🤝🏴

Man it's tough this landscaping business, I'm on the same boat. Sick of this weather and body is starting to get rusty. And stuff, don't even get me started 😞 Good luck mate
I'm 46, and my body is knackered. Spent the last 5 years slowly winding the business down. If I'd found reliable staff I could have flourished. Was never a problem finding the work. I'm not sure what I'll do next. Hope you find something else.
46 and fecked don’t sound good yeh definitely slowly unwind find something a bit easier on the body for sure { but what that’s the problem] Also on the staff side of it yeh it’s sucks they just don’t want too do it 👍🏴
Just like to say I totally agree with everything you just said. Labour biggest problem closely followed by the cost of materials. Unfortunately atm costing work and giving estimates which clients seam to think are excessive is demoralising when all your doing is trying to earn a living. But glad your not totally coming out of the game cos your an excellent tradesman 👍
My brother in law retired at 60 on a million pound pension he worked for Kelloggs all he dose now is travel the world his job was a packer with 10 weeks holiday pay .I'm a self employed gardener and still working at 74. There is no pension, no holiday pay have regularly cortisone injections in my knees and shoulders being self employed is hard if I worked for the council as a gardener, I would have got a good pension so I don't blame you calling it a day at 54 I've watched all your videos. Customer want their garden to doing for nothing .
@@frankholehouse6370 wish I worked for Kelloggs !!!!! Not self employed and hopefully my new endear will be sufficient to carry me on for a while longer we’ll see what happens 👍🏴 thanks, for watching
What a wonderfully honest video. The quality of your work is awesome and the industry is a weaker place with your departure but you have to do what is right for you. I based my porcelain drive on your epic video. Your pivot to outdoor kitchens is a good one. Since covid, outdoor space has become more valuable as people dream of a better life. Tidybricks LOCAL Designs - Lifestyle Outdoor Cooking And Living Designs - maybe its a mouthful lol. Good luck Scott.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching the porcelain driveway job too that was a classic and yeh my new move is a slow burner atm as I’m bombarded with patio clean up jobs atm and I’m liking it 👍🏴
Best of luck. outdoor kitchens well on trend, you’ll do well, just keep going on the RUclips , so far you’ve taught me how to lay paving ( I’ve just finished), to use a paving slurry, what grout to use, and next up is the pizza oven, following your guide from here, so cheers!
Absolutely nothing wrong with just being honest with yourself, laying pavers etc is back breaking work and should pay better, I’ve done small projects myself and got pretty good and laying pavers and mitre corners/edges but we just had a pool installed and we paid someone else to do the pool paving because I know how labour intensive it is, plus I’m 41 with a pinched nerve in my arse. Great videos and I have enjoyed watching them mate, good luck with the new idea doing outdoor cooking area, I actually think it’s a fantastic idea, bit less labour intensive and can chart a decent price plus job satisfaction, I’m currently setting up our outdoor kitchen here in Australia. All the best
Pinched nerve in the ass sounds a bit shit I had something similar a while back did my head in !! Yeh tidybricks outdoor dinning sounds like a much simpler idea less stress so keep watching and good luck with yours too 👍🏴
Sorry to hear this mate. I wish we were based closer to you as we would happily sub contract landscaping work with you but unfortunately we are based in Northamptonshire 😒. You are a cracking landscaper who has worked bloody hard to achieve your craft and you are also a brilliant entertainer as well. You've taught myself as well as loads of other RUclipsrs the art and skill of laying paving to the highest standards in the industry and I couldn't thank you enough for your amazing content. Don't let this get you down pal as they say when one door closes another one opens. How are you doing with work these days anyway? And how is your ankle doing? 🙂 Kind regards, Sam
Much appreciated for all of that and yeh I could of been a good idea so sub stuff out but I’ve lost my mojo already and almost finished my first outdoor dining area it’s looking lush and manageable for just me to plod on As for the ankle yeh it’s getting there but still a bit shit on uneven ground 👍🏴
Only today I've been contemplating work and life and how long more I can do landscaping. I'm 53 with back issues and 70% of my work is paving. I miss loads of days with the weather. Luckily I never bothered employing anyone.
Well well what a sad day Scott It's one more tradesmen that's left the industry of skilled workers. It's is hard out in the big world of life . The hardest thing is admission to your self that you can't do it because of health. I hope your well as you seemed to be a bit down. Keep your chin up mate hope your new venture goes well. 👍 🏴🍺
Running a business properly is really tough and not always worth it either so let’s make things less complicated build smaller stuff !! Genius 👍🏴
A sad day mate, really sad i know what you mean about the corporation tax its a shitter mate, you was my online mentor the greatest, stay in touch🏴
I worked as a groundworker and took pride in my work, it's hard going manual labour especially in our unpredictable climate, it's been a great pleasure to watch your videos attention to detail, skill and being generous with your knowledge. It's also great to listen to your words of wisdom good and bad, it reminds me of my older brothers little talks growing up. I wish you all the best for the future, keep the vids going and don't let the crap get you down.
Thanks for sharing glad you appreciate the same issues and as you get older it just gets worse but the content will continue as I enjoy doing it and yeh chin up ignore the crap in the world 👍🏴
Only just found your channel a few months back, was looking forward to seeing lots more great work, I guess that won’t be happening, good luck on your retirement age gets the best of all of us body just wears out to renew it……
Wishing you the best of luck mate I fully agree with everything you said As I approach 40 I’m also crap with putting money away for tax ect Enjoy the job but hate the admin side Just brought a old van as my truck that I love just isn’t the right thing so she’s got to go Got very close to packing up just before Xmas and going back to farming which is my real true love You and Matty from brockstone have been inspirational for me and I drive to produce work like you both Looking forward to seeing the. New venture Tidy out door kitchens ( the space your Garden didn’t know it needed )
Great punch line I love it !!!!! I might actually use that 🤜 Yeh the admin side of it all sucks ass never done any of that right always hated it Farming wow now that’s also tough I bet especially now the world’s gone mental !!!! Good luck on the road ahead you choose 👍🏴

I've been self-employed for over 10 + year's now and have always struggled with reliable labourers. They all want to become millionaires overnight but can't get out of bed in the morning and the one's that can, are always either on their phones or complaining about the weather.. I don't take on large jobs anymore, I do as you're planning on doing, just bitesized jobs, jobs I can easily do on my own! Good luck with your new venture..
I so agree with you regarding the labourers and that’s the backbone of the company when you think of it and there busy on there phone I does my head in !!! Yeh bite size jobs from now on less stress and I’m happy with that 👍🏴 good luck in the future Matt
I’m 60 , do landscaping, fencing. , bit of tree surgery , the hard part for me is the weather , doesn’t get any easier as u get older , but needs must !
I sold my own Landscaping business two years ago, I run the business for 34 years. The biggest problem I had the whole time of being in business was STAFF what a nightmare! We always paid well above min wage, provided everything, vans, tools, etc. My business was really successful, loved my job, but hated running a business and mainly because of staff. You are going the right way, do jobs where you can rely on yourself only. But do put some aside from every job for the tax man. it's not worth the Hassel and you can't charge the revenue interest.
I was exactly the same, always down to the staff. They don't give a flying fu@k about the business and think you're making a fortune, pure jealousy. I shut mine down, binned all of them, and started again. I knew I didn't need them to earn a living.
Sorry to hear that about selling the business that’s a shame but it goes to show it’s all about the staff if it fails or not as money doesn’t grow on trees but glad to here your now just relying on yourself with smaller jobs, makes sense good luck 👍🏴
That’s where I’m different. Went self employed since 1988 when I was 18. My attitude when I work for someone I know I have to earn my wages and earn the boss a profit. I’m old school though not like the youth of today! Good luck buddy!
I feel the same but fortunately I realised it was dead end in my 30’s. Huge over heads, hard difficult work, back breaking headache, stressful. Seems a thankless task. Customers thinking 10k is enough to landscape a whole garden. I’m very picky what I choose now. I’d rather sit at home than hard scape a garden at a loss.
Yeh totally agree with you I would of been better stacking shelves for Amazon for someone and been better off it’s a hard graft job with it’s difficult customers 👍🏴
Tydybrickslandscaping Be sad to see stopping the landscaping But understand why 😢 Myself is going to start on my own just a bit concerned about getting work any tips 👌
Good luck with starting up Start small start easy and slowly get bigger and faster and better gain experience absorb it all and never rush anything 👍🏴
I get you. And some folk might call it moaning.. I certainly seem to “moan” a lot more but I feel it’s justifiable 😂 there is so much stacked against being self employed, not to mention it’s a physical job, but the obstacles.. the 20mph speed limit 😂 don’t get me started. It’s typical of a rule made up by someone in a suit that has never driven or done a decent day’s work in their life, it’s one of those looks good on paper. That’s just one example of an obstacle to someone self employed who either drives professionally for a living or relies on their vehicle for work I.e tradespersons. It’s a daft rule and I’ll continue to ignore it where possible.
Sorry to hear you have had to cease your landscaping business following your ankle fusion. Can I please enquire what work safety boots did you purchase to support your ankle after your fusion and return to work as I am currently working in the construction industry and in week 11 of recovery and planning to return to work in the near future
Steel blue boots best I’ve ever had in my construction career not cheap but really good boots and good luck heading back into work after the fusion op ? If so I don’t think you’ll be going back any time soon Tell me more about
You can pay your tax monthly on the HMRC website with your account login. Any self employed person can do this then it's the same as PAYE . If you can't pay the full amount then pay what you can afford, then the remainder Jan or July. 54 I jacked self employment. I know what your saying
Your still got a few good years easily ,loved some of your work ,you have to pick your jobs ,what about tilling house floors ,all year round , a,t,b stevie
What a shame , such a highly skilled knowledgeable man and he looks dejected , landscaping has massive wear and tear on the body and mind . Unless you are a big outfit with very big turnover being self employed is waste of time especially when providing labour only , and depending on weather on top of that , Unless some landscaping firm employ you to mastermind a project and other s do the donkey work ,
Yeh it’s a hard game to be in and it’s about time I found another way to pay my bills and actually more interesting I hope with less shit to move 👍🏴
Totally understand quitting landscaping, I need two other jobs to keep my gardening going, 50 this year now suffering with tennis allbow, arthritis, bad back, weather for most of the year is pissing down, when I do make good money most of it goes back into repairing tools, I never have a sunny day off because of the rain all my customers phone at once, despite loving the outdoors I wish I wasn't such an arsehole at school and learnt a different trade
I was the same asshole in school to busy fecking about and yeh wish I did engineering of some sort really And yeh the weather has been really shite this year screws everything up 👍🏴

Man it's tough this landscaping business, I'm on the same boat. Sick of this weather and body is starting to get rusty.
And stuff, don't even get me started 😞
Good luck mate
You got that right! I feel the ackes and pains too 👍🏴
Best wishes for the future pal. You have a gift that I was always in awe of. Stay safe.
Cheers buddy that’s very kind 👍🏴
Good luck Scott hope it all works out for you
Fingers crossed! Just started it 👍🏴
Always enjoyed watching your videos , good luck with your endeavours.
Awesome, thank you! That’s the plan 👍🏴
All the best buddy. I learned a lot watching you and Justin Brickright. Top Welsh tradies! 🏴
Cheers Marcus glad we’ve been of assistance 👍🏴
I'm 46, and my body is knackered. Spent the last 5 years slowly winding the business down. If I'd found reliable staff I could have flourished. Was never a problem finding the work. I'm not sure what I'll do next. Hope you find something else.
46 and fecked don’t sound good yeh definitely slowly unwind find something a bit easier on the body for sure { but what that’s the problem]
Also on the staff side of it yeh it’s sucks they just don’t want too do it 👍🏴
Still young ffs
Good luck Scott, whatever happens always keep it Tidy mate 👍🏻
Tidybricks outdoor dinning sounds like a new start 👍🏴
Just like to say I totally agree with everything you just said. Labour biggest problem closely followed by the cost of materials. Unfortunately atm costing work and giving estimates which clients seam to think are excessive is demoralising when all your doing is trying to earn a living. But glad your not totally coming out of the game cos your an excellent tradesman 👍
Cheers blue and yeh it’s definitely labour being a huge part of it all glad I’m turning my back on it by doing something else keep watching 👍🏴
No dosh, no pension, still grafting at 72 just to scrape a living, everything hurts. Living the dream baby.
same here at 53 got nothing to show for it either and it all hurts 👍🏴

Best of luck, outdoor kitchens are a nice little niche, can't get enough of them 😅
fingers crossed it works out and I can keep the content coming 👍🏴
What a wonderfully honest video. The quality of your work is awesome and the industry is a weaker place with your departure but you have to do what is right for you. I based my porcelain drive on your epic video. Your pivot to outdoor kitchens is a good one. Since covid, outdoor space has become more valuable as people dream of a better life. Tidybricks LOCAL Designs - Lifestyle Outdoor Cooking And Living Designs - maybe its a mouthful lol. Good luck Scott.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching the porcelain driveway job too that was a classic and yeh my new move is a slow burner atm as I’m bombarded with patio clean up jobs atm and I’m liking it 👍🏴
Fair play to you ! You will clean up the Outdoor kitchen area’ jobs….Go for it Tidy 🎉
Thanks 👍 paul blocks going down tomorrow let’s get it on !! 👍🏴
What a loss. Your excellent work lives on 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you kindly 👍🏴
All the Best for the future. Really enjoy your channel, delivered great projects containing good humour throughout.👍
Glad you enjoyed it more to come just a bit different 👍🏴
Best of luck. outdoor kitchens well on trend, you’ll do well, just keep going on the RUclips , so far you’ve taught me how to lay paving ( I’ve just finished), to use a paving slurry, what grout to use, and next up is the pizza oven, following your guide from here, so cheers!
Awesome! Thank you! And yes outdoor kitchens will trend 👍🏴
What a shame ! Gutted pal and thanks for the fab vids
hopefully the new direction works out for me and I’ll keep the content coming 👍🏴
Yeh tidybricks outdoor dinning sounds like a much simpler idea less stress so keep watching and good luck with yours too 👍🏴
Alot of respect for you. Best of luck mate, learnt alot from Newport
Much appreciated thx for watching the content 👍🏴
Well done bro!!! your idea is brilliant, you can do outdoor kitchens standing on your head!!! go for it!!
cheers robin yeh I’m looking forward to something new and outdoor dining sounds like a plan. nice channel btw and subbed 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping nice one bro
love your honesty on this video will miss your work
I appreciate that! More content coming keep watching 👍🏴
Kind regards,
Sam
Much appreciated for all of that and yeh I could of been a good idea so sub stuff out but I’ve lost my mojo already and almost finished my first outdoor dining area it’s looking lush and manageable for just me to plod on
As for the ankle yeh it’s getting there but still a bit shit on uneven ground 👍🏴
Good luck thanks for all your advice over the years 👍
Thx for that appreciated 👍🏴
i had the same op as you 20 years later still sore some day's all the best for the future whatever you decide to do
Same op hey almost a year for me now and tidybricks outdoor dinning sounds like a plan to me 👍🏴
Only today I've been contemplating work and life and how long more I can do landscaping. I'm 53 with back issues and 70% of my work is paving. I miss loads of days with the weather. Luckily I never bothered employing anyone.
Sounds like you simplified things which is good but shame about your back I feel the pain 👍🏴
Hope your new venture goes great. Love the videos. Good luck. 👍
Thanks dude and I’ve got my fingers crossed for it 👍🏴
Well well what a sad day Scott
It's one more tradesmen that's left the industry of skilled workers.
Genius 👍🏴
Wishing you all the best whatever you decide to do next, take care
Tidybricks outdoor dinning is the new plan everything smaller and more manageable 👍🏴
Whatever you do, I wish you luck, outside living and few garden walls will be great. 👍
That's the plan! And hopefully entering too 👍🏴
Well Good luck with the new direction 👍👍

Thank you! Cheers! Let’s see what happens 👍🏴
Gotta try these things m8. Best of luck to ya
Worth a try as always fingers crossed 👍🏴
I worked as a groundworker and took pride in my work, it's hard going manual labour especially in our unpredictable climate, it's been a great pleasure to watch your videos attention to detail, skill and being generous with your knowledge. It's also great to listen to your words of wisdom good and bad, it reminds me of my older brothers little talks growing up. I wish you all the best for the future, keep the vids going and don't let the crap get you down.
Thanks for sharing glad you appreciate the same issues and as you get older it just gets worse but the content will continue as I enjoy doing it and yeh chin up ignore the crap in the world 👍🏴
Good luck Scott 👍👍
Cheers joe onwards and upwards hey 👍🏴
Only just found your channel a few months back, was looking forward to seeing lots more great work, I guess that won’t be happening, good luck on your retirement age gets the best of all of us body just wears out to renew it……

I fully agree with everything you said
As I approach 40 I’m also crap with putting money away for tax ect
Enjoy the job but hate the admin side
Just brought a old van as my truck that I love just isn’t the right thing so she’s got to go
Got very close to packing up just before Xmas and going back to farming which is my real true love
You and Matty from brockstone have been inspirational for me and I drive to produce work like you both
Looking forward to seeing the. New venture
Tidy out door kitchens ( the space your Garden didn’t know it needed )
Great punch line I love it !!!!! I might actually use that 🤜
Yeh the admin side of it all sucks ass never done any of that right always hated it
Farming wow now that’s also tough I bet especially now the world’s gone mental !!!!
Good luck on the road ahead you choose 👍🏴

Totally agree 👍🏴
It’s certainly a tough old game hey 👍🏴
Always enjoyed your video stay positive
Thank you! You too! 👍🏴
Same for yourself wish you all the best by making it smaller 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks but not working anymore took very early retirement and loving it 😀
That’s where I’m different.
Tydybrickslandscaping Be sad to see stopping the landscaping
But understand why 😢
Myself is going to start on my own just a bit concerned about getting work any tips 👌
Good luck with starting up
Start small start easy and slowly get bigger and faster and better gain experience absorb it all and never rush anything 👍🏴
Thanks for the advice I really appreciate tht I will keep u updated
Ill watch out for ur new ventures Tydybricks landscaping 👌👌👌👌
It’s a daft rule and I’ll continue to ignore it where possible.
lol every time I see the electric smiley face signs after a camera I always speed up to make it frown 🙁 haha feck em all 👍🏴
Keep it simple is the golden rule to life
KISS keep it simple stupid that’s what I say 👍🏴
Sorry to hear you have had to cease your landscaping business following your ankle fusion. Can I please enquire what work safety boots did you purchase to support your ankle after your fusion and return to work as I am currently working in the construction industry and in week 11 of recovery and planning to return to work in the near future
Steel blue boots best I’ve ever had in my construction career not cheap but really good boots and good luck heading back into work after the fusion op ? If so I don’t think you’ll be going back any time soon
Tell me more about
Good luck in whatever yo decide to do. Keep the video's coming tho 👍
Outdoor dining and I’ve been busy building today 👍🏴
You can pay your tax monthly on the HMRC website with your account login. Any self employed person can do this then it's the same as PAYE .
If you can't pay the full amount then pay what you can afford, then the remainder Jan or July. 54 I jacked self employment. I know what your saying
Always struggled with paying the tax as the money goes on all types of bills just to live 👍🏴
Good look with the future.
How much was you earning per day roughly if you don't mind?
Thanks for that as for earnings well mmmm tricky one as everything is always in the price but as for day work rate I’m in the 200\250 bracket 👍🏴

@@tidybrickslandscaping yay I would miss you otherwise. Don’t forget if your ever in Leicestershire then I’ll make you a cup of tea x
What a shame , such a highly skilled knowledgeable man and he looks dejected , landscaping has massive wear and tear on the body and mind . Unless you are a big outfit with very big turnover being self employed is waste of time especially when providing labour only , and depending on weather on top of that ,
Unless some landscaping firm employ you to mastermind a project and other s do the donkey work ,
Yeh it’s a hard game to be in and it’s about time I found another way to pay my bills and actually more interesting I hope with less shit to move 👍🏴
I was the same asshole in school to busy fecking about and yeh wish I did engineering of some sort really
And yeh the weather has been really shite this year screws everything up 👍🏴
