Get started with this tiny flat $20 CRT from AliExpress

- I just got this small CRT from AliExpress, for just $20! It's a flat CRT, developed by Sony in the 80's for their Watchman TV. Basically a tiny TV you could carry around. Nowadays this tech is obviously obsolete, replaced by modern LCD and plasma screens. But at the time it was an amazing engineering accomplishment. We can use it for several projects, connecting it to a retro video game console or just tinker with it learning all about CRTs
Bear in mind that this tiny device generate a high voltage, that could cause an electric shock, so only use it if you know what you are doing.

Cool piece of tech. I have 0 use for it but i'm glad it exists.
Doorbell at my parents place uses one of those
Surprising it's from late 2000s early 2010s so apparently it was still cheaper than small LCD even back then
Interesting, I guess it's because it's cheaper to get an analog input from the doorbell camera and directly plug it into a CRT, than doing all the conversion into digital. I might be wrong though
@@messycircuits good point, it might be a case of saving on a not just on the screen but video processing and stuff.
Don't recall seeing model number on the doorbell tho, might be on the back side and i doubt my parents would be happy if i started dismantling their house to see how it's hooked up
May be also for temperature range - CRT works well in cold environment. LCDs work badly when cold (VERY slow), and deteriorate when hot.
@@fhunter1test and CRTs are probably more uv resistant than LCDs. Important for something that will be permanently on the outside
This is great! I don't think I've seen a flat CRT before and to see it in this form factor is really interesting. Not to mention the possibilities for a mobile retro system with authentic image reproduction. Keep up the good work!
exactly
Thank you! 💾🕹
I’d forgotten I’d bought one of these CRT’s and now can’t remember what I was going to do with it..😳👍
LOL, I totally get that! Sometimes I buy stuff and forget about it too. Maybe it’s just waiting for the right moment to shine!
survilliance or door camera if you havnt one
I have the perfect use for this! Ordering 5, lol
Nice, have fun! Feel free to share your project, I would like to know what people do with these devices.
This is so cool
Cannot think of a reason for this other than learning about CRTs, but it's cool!
Would be cool for old console testing to see if they work. Like a trouble shooting tool. 😄
Nice I like to use my PS4 and PS5 with my Sony Watchmans. I use a HDMI in to AV out adapter.
Nice! That’s great!!
i mean i guess you do get better motion clarity compared to 60 hz on a lcd (without strobing) on it but thats about the only redeeming quality
also just the novelty is cool
Blessed by the algorithm gods with your awesome channel. Subbed
Thank you! 💾🕹
Very neat screen, wonder if it could fit inside a drive bay on a pc tower case.
I think it should fit in a drive bay, but I'm afraid that during the day it might not be easy to see. As far as I could test, the screen doesn't have much brightness and contrast. I would rather go for the PC tower case :)
It would be interesting play game boy games (and other retro handhelds) on CRT Also I've seen fresnel lens on arcade cabinet. I was thinking on the crt viewfinders to build analogue headset when I found it.
That sounds like an interesting project, do you mean like using the screens in a headset for each eye?
@@messycircuits yes I 've seen it on youtube actually. Kind of vr goggles with analogue screens using raspberry pi
steamvr on crts lmao
Game boy on b&w
Will there ever be a color version?
Not sure but I don't think it would be that easy due space, complexity and power consumption. In 1989 Sony released the FDL 330S color, but it was an LCD display. I never saw one of these CRT in color.
Uunlikely, these wouldn't be a new design, and it's quite likely they're just selling existing old stock until it runs out.
Bless the RUclips algorithm 🙏 subbed!
Welcome aboard!
How did you get sound when I never saw you connect any audio jacks/plugs ?
The Play Station has a video and audio output, separated in three cables with RCA connectors. The yellow is video and the red and white are for each audio channel. I got the video in the CRT, which is the only thing it can accept and then I captured the audio with the computer
This has to be old stock right? No way they still make them
That's an interesting question. Just in case I'm ordering another one :)
based on the sony logo i saw it appears to be old stock
Or hack a Sony Watchman.
What’s the purpose though? Nobody is nostalgic about psone on a watchman screen in black and white
The purpose is find something interesting, tinkering with it, perhaps even learning something. I didn't even know something like a watchman existed in the first place, lmao
