    I love these little guys!😍 I was fortunate to have them outside of our shed two years ago. I haven't seen them since then but was able to see a few hatch and fly away.

    Mason bees rock! Got my mother and sister interested in them. This is my third season for Mason's. Cold spring we're having and windy. I think they're so cute when you can see their little white face poking out of the cocoon's. The harsh winter we had killed most of my fall starts. Luckily though the fruit trees I planted last year are in full bloom. Good info.

    I'm a first time bee keeper. I used bamboo tubes. Can I clean the tube out to clean the cocoons? I won't use these again.

    • @IntegrativeGardening
      @IntegrativeGardening  3 года назад +1

      That's a good question. Yes you can try to clean them out but some residue of disease my remain. The best option to keep things clean is to replace the paper tubes every year.

    Thank you, very informative. Do you have any info about leaf cutter bees. I started late and that was all I could order, new at this.

      I don't have any info about leaf cutter bees but that would be a great topic for a video.

    Great Video. I live in Portland area and just set out my new mason bee house today (3/28/18). It's getting great sun today and I just noticed my first bee is starting to emerge. However, you know in this area that we are about to have rain and cool weather again next week. Are the emerging too early? I'm worried they're coming out to early! Thanks!

      @IntegrativeGardening  6 лет назад

      From Jen: "Re: bees emerging too early, well- they will emerge after it has been 55 degrees or warmer for 3-5 days. So there is no “right time” for them, from their biological perspective. But with climate change, we are seeing springs be cooler and wetter- so if bees emerge now and heavy rain or lots of cold weather rolls in- this can cause them to starve if they can’t forage. Hopefully, the weather will hold and bees will be ok."

    How do you protect the bee house from mosquito abatement spraying when you know your county will be spraying pesticide?

    What will they eat if you're taking them out, and taking out their pollen, too?

    • @IntegrativeGardening
      @IntegrativeGardening  3 года назад

      When they are taken out they are in cocoon stage and so have everything they need in their wrap.

    Thanks for the video! What are the tubes made of and lined with? How do you get them out of the tubes?

    • @IntegrativeGardening
      @IntegrativeGardening  7 лет назад +1

      Jen uses basic cardboard tubes. She lets some of them hatch out naturally. She cuts some of the tubes open carefully and puts the cocoons in cardboards boxes with a hole in it so they don't have to fight their way past any diseased areas in the tubes. It is debatable which way is best so she covers all bases and does both.

      Local nursery said the mason bees have had a very hard winter and they may not be able to have any stock :( Hope your bees are doing better than most!

    • @IntegrativeGardening
      @IntegrativeGardening  6 лет назад

      Jen moves the mason bee tubes inside in winter to protect them. She uses the paper tubes only once so she doesn't spread disease to the bees. I'm glad you liked our video about mason bees. I don't think she sells her bees. She fosters them for the winter and then places them in locations around town.
