I don't remember who it was (was just some video in RUclips's suggestions column that I didn't choose to click on), but somebody made a video which argued that, in spite of the fact that it LOOKED like the army had things under control, the world actually WASN'T saved from the Mist. Sometimes I watch such videos because the "going against the current" perspectives they give can be mind broadening, other times I ignore them because, often as not, they're just contrarian BS.
jenmurrayxo To make the ending even more dark (if such a thing is possible), the army came from BEHIND them. Meaning that if they just stopped for a minute, the army would have caught up to them. But they literally ran from rescue until they couldn't run anymore, and then ended it before rescue could catch up.
Frank Darabont is famously acknowledged as among the best directors of King's work. His retirement was a rough patch for us fans, but thankfully we now have the brilliant Mike Flanagan enthusiastically taking up the mantle. And, if I never see another film by Akiva Goldsman, I think I can rest easy.
That ending is one of the biggest gut-punches in horror film history. It takes what was a really good movie and makes it exceptional. Truly one you won't forget. Stephen King after seeing the movie said that he wished he's thought of that ending.
@@ashscott6068 If you want a happy ending, watch some disney flick. A film which sparks such horrific gut punching emotions is a rarity once in a while. Nothing is sadder than a film you watch and at the end you just say "meh, they did a good job" and forget it. This movie will stick.
In the original story, the ending is something that is contemplated as a last resort plan, but they ultimately decide to carry on. I think that's why Darabont does such great work with SK's stuff: He knows how to amplify it for the screen while still staying true to it.
Thomas Jane's anguished screams brings tears to my eyes everytime. His character now has to live with what he did when he thought he was being merciful
imagine not speculating during a reaction. Its a weird request. On the plus side not making any comments you could just film yourself watching a movie and then use that footage for all movies. That would make editing much easier.
Having not seen the movie or read the book, I feel the ending is a cheap shot for emotional impact. The same ending written differently might have had a better hit. Yes the survivors had gone through an extremely traumatic night but to commit suicide at the end with no immediate threat just seems cheap after having toughed it out through so much else.
@divemonkeys the book end was different there was no suicide the survivors just drove off into the mist it left the reader wide open to interpretation of what they thought was gonna happen
For those that have read other King novels, there is a theory that Mrs. Carmody is not praying to the Abrahamic God. When praying, she keeps repeating the mantra: "My life for you." That is the phrase used by the Trash Can Man in his devotion to Randall Flagg, the Walking Dude, from "The Stand". That explains why she is so bloodthirsty and evil acting. I really like this theory. It seems like it is part of the Stephen King Universe.
It never occurred to me when I watched it, because she fits the idea of the wacky preacher in these situations. But as soon as I saw someone suggest it online, it struck me as perfect.
Great reaction Jen. Stephen King said that ending was something even he'd never even thought of. When I saw this in the theater, I was like "Holy S.....!!"
The most horrific thing about this movie is that it confirms what most of us already know about human nature. "A person is smart. People are stupid, dangerous, panicky animals and you know it."
The other thing that a lot of people miss is that if he had gone in the other direction rather than going home he would have been driving toward the army and away from the Mist. But the direction they choose took them further into the Mist. That is the part that really sticks with me after all these years. I remember seeing this in the theater. It was the only time i ever remember the place being dead ass quiet when we were leaving. Seriously no one said a peep walking out of there. It was creepy.

What's even scarier is that everything Mrs Carmody said came true. She said when the boy was sacrificed it would all be over. Such a wild film with an insane ending.
"That kid's cute, I hope he doesn't die." Rah-roh! Also, funny that you said this had zombie movie vibes. Frank Darabont used several of the actors again when he directed The Walking Dead.
The ending is like a Twilight Zone ending on steroids. When I saw this at the theater with a friend It elicited one of the most intense and emotional responses from me than about any film I can think of. My friend, who wasn't into horror like me, was absolutely freaked the hell out.

The most frightening story I've ever read about fog is Larry Niven's "For a Foggy Night". Fog, we're told, is not just water vapor in the air. No, it's when alternate realities overlap, and the blur you see around objects in the fog is the probability of them being in that location. Sometimes when someone goes walking in the fog, they end up in the other reality.
It's a Walking Dead reunion in that grocery store! Or maybe it's more accurate to say the Walking Dead was a the Mist reunion. It would also seem that Berserk creator Kentaro Miura was a fan of the Mist, those clawed tentacles definitely served as inspiration for a monster in the manga
Bonus comment: that organ and haunting lady was from a band called Dead Can Dance. Its called Host of Seraphim. It's haunting and has been in other movies. Can't think of a better use of it though.
A lot of the leads went on to star in the 1st season of the walking dead. Also Steven King LOVED this ending more than HIS ending. Where they just drove off into the mist, the end.
Frank Darabont (the director, screenwriter, producer of this movie) adapted the graphic novel series "The Walking Dead" for TV. Used a lot of the same actors from this movie for the show. I was a big fan of that show, I think you should check it out.
the haunting music at the movie's climax is called "the host of the seraphim" by aussie "neoclassical darkwave band" dead can dance from their 1988 album "the serpent's egg". it's also on their 1991 compilation album "a passage in time", which i have. 👍
The music cue at the end with the haunting vocal is actually a track from the album “Spleen and Ideal” by the band ‘Dead Can Dance’. Being the obvious music lover you are, you would really appreciate them.
I always saw this as a sci-fi version of John Ford's "The Lost Patrol" (1934). Both had individuals stuck in an isolated area. Trying to leave will mean certain death. And both featured a religious fanatic among the group. Marcia Gay Harden in this movie, and Boris Karloff in the 1934 film.
My head cannon is that the military base was Black Mesa Research Facility. I just looked, apparently the novella for The Mist was part of the inspiration for Half-Life, so yes, Gordon Freeman is definitely somewhere out there in the background of this movie smashing headcrabs with a crowbar.
The *REALLY* scary thing about this movie is that the fanatics like those portrayed are not fiction. Though given the choice, I would rather not have to deal with the things in the Mist. Reality is bad enough.
The man in the painting at the beginning is The Gunslinger (Roland Deschain)....which is another Stephen King novel. Actually there are 8 gunslinger novels....you should read them all.

Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too!
That movie is a hidden gem of the genre!
I like your guessing. Be yourself, Jen.
Yep, it's a pretty good monster movie but then the ending really elevates it to something special.
22:11 "I thought that kid was getting shot."
Oh, Jen. If you only knew then what you know now.
This is the secret prequel to The Walking Dead
That ending always makes me a bit... Misty-eyed!
😁
the haunting music at the movie's climax is called "the host of the seraphim" by aussie "neoclassical darkwave band" dead can dance from their 1988 album "the serpent's egg". it's also on their 1991 compilation album "a passage in time", which i have. 👍
Yep Dead Can Dance do some amazing music.
Yes, and both had the surviving protagonist go crazy in the end.
32:45 I mean he kept his promise lol. That’s a good dad right there
Nobody is ready for that ending.
My head cannon is that the military base was Black Mesa Research Facility.
I just looked, apparently the novella for The Mist was part of the inspiration for Half-Life, so yes, Gordon Freeman is definitely somewhere out there in the background of this movie smashing headcrabs with a crowbar.
jenmurrayxo+ Great reaction, Jen. Never let anyone change how you watch movies. Never be afraid to show emotions. 🌹♥️👍
"When I'm nervous, I'm very chatty..." Poor thing, you must be terrified ALL of the time! 🙂lol
"Are we going to have a tiny romance... then one of them dies" To quote Edgar from Men in Black. "Blerp Cough...
Yer Half Right"
"That kid's cute! Hope he doesn't die!" HAHAHA...ha... 😢
This and The Fly have produced the most visceral nopes from me as far as movies go.
The *REALLY* scary thing about this movie is that the fanatics like those portrayed are not fiction.
Though given the choice, I would rather not have to deal with the things in the Mist. Reality is bad enough.
"That kids cute, I hope he dosn't die."

The man in the painting at the beginning is The Gunslinger (Roland Deschain)....which is another Stephen King novel. Actually there are 8 gunslinger novels....you should read them all.
Jen.. keep being yourself. I think most of us appreciate your guessing games and seeing how right or wrong you are. It's fun. 😊
