    Hi Tony, excellent video. I have a DGX-670 and would like to offer some insights regarding the speaker system, amplifiers, the weight, and a comparison with the Korg XE20:
    1) Speakers: The DGX-670 has very large speaker enclosures inside the unit. I owned the DGX-660 for 4 years and opened it. The speaker boxes meet almost in the middle, they are not the small rectangular box they appear to be from the outside. The Roland FP-30X does not have speaker boxes, only a 12 cm driver mounted on the plastic lower assembly. The Casio PX-S1100 does not a speaker box either. This means those speakers will not generate a proper range of frequencies. In addition, the tweeter in the DGX-670 gives you the finer details. The boxes in the DGX-670 are ported and tuned for a good bass response. That's absent in the FP-30X or Casio PX-S1100.
    2) Amplifiers: the 22 watts in the Roland FP-30X means nothing in practice for several more technical reasons. Amplifiers power is calculated not while playing piano. It is calculated using a purely resistive load that does not change the impedance (like a speaker does, which changes the power readings). It is calculated using pure sine waves at certain frequencies, not music. Amplifier power is a "laboratory number". In practice, you can expect digital pianos to consume about 1 watt total (both speakers) while playing piano. Roland specifies that the FP-30X consumes 3 watts while turned on and playing nothing, and 4 watts while playing at medium volume. This means less than 0.5 watts per speaker at medium volume (amplifiers are not 100% efficient).
    I have tested amplifier powers many times, including the real power consumption of my DGX-670. It is about 5.4 watts when playing nothing and 6.4 watts playing at maximum volume. Notice this is similar to the results Roland reports of less than 0.5 watts per channel.
    If these numbers seem too small and hard to believe for you, trust me I have done real life calculations using proper equipment.
    3) Weight: I have opened the DGX-660. It has a large MDF particle board on the bottom. That is very heavy by itself. I estimate it might be about 10 pounds. It gives the instrument stability. If you remove and put a piece of plastic, like the Kawai ES920, you will probably get the same weight as other pianos. The ES920 plastic case vibrates when you play instruments with low frequency content.
    4) Korg XE20: I have played the XE20. I also used to own the Korg PA60, which was a great arranger back in 2000. The XE20 has the same old arranger found in the Korg PA60. The pianos don't sound good in the XE20 in person, and the speaker system is mediocre, but not as bad as the Casio PX-S1100/3100. Casio has the worst speakers of all digital pianos I can think of, because they place them on the back with no enclosure and have no room to breathe. In addition, Casio uses polypropylene instead of quality paper cones like Yamaha or Roland.
    Since I owned the Korg PA60, I know those styles by heart... and the XE20 sounds the same... not bad at all, but Korg has new arrangers (from the modest PA600 to the PA4X top of the line arranger). The new arrangers sound way better and have a better tone generator.
    The Korg XE20 is the B2 digital piano (I have played that one too and it is probably even below the Casio PX-S1100 in terms of sound quality) with their 20-year old arranger technology.
    The DGX-670 is, on the other hand, new technology, new tone generator, and just way better than those offerings by Casio or Korg.

      WOW! Thanks so much for all of that info and insight that's super valuable to have on the channel! And that MDF board makes perfect sense (both for explaining the weight AND how solidly built the DGX feels compared to other pianos). Super interesting about the speaker boxes as well - the DGX's speakers sound wonderful to me at a lower wattage than alot of the competition.
      Thanks again!

    I purchased DGX 670 because I wanted to play keyboard and was amazed at the instrument sounds. I am never going to be a good piano player (in my Eighties) Started last year and can't get my left hand moving, but I am trying. With the chords and simple melodies played with the right hand (Easy play 50s,60s, 70s,) I am having fun. Looking forward to your how to on this instrument as hopefull I progress. Just bought this complete setup in 24. I have the white one and it’s such a quality instrument. Don’t cheap out on the bench make sure it’s adjustable. The built in speakers are decent. I’m happy with it. I’ve never played in my life as you get older try to learn everything you can as life is short.

    Thank you for the link to this video. Yes, the former DGX pianos were synth action 88 key, but the connection to the sound engine and velocity settings made it IMPOSSIBLE to play. I owned the PiagerroNPV80 which is the same. NOW, the new DGX is not even the same instrument in any way shape or form!! A friend bought one and I played it, it is superior to the YamahaP515. Action is good and controllable, sound is even across the keyboard, and the layering/split is extensive compared to a P125(a). Detailed editing of all the sounds including the piano, makes it customizable to anyone's idea of what an acoustic piano should sound like (not possible with the P125) Buying the 3pedal unit gives access to 4 pedals total for programmable huge control when playing styles. This is truly Yamaha's greatest achievement in Dpiano's in their history for price/value and an under $1000.00 piano for everyone from beginner to expert. Nothing on the market now compares, it will be years while other manufacturers catch up.

    I just wanted to comment on how well thought out your videos are. I am 67yrs old. I have taken lessons in my younger years. at least 3yrs each of Trumpet, Saxaphone, and percussion.
    Now retired, I wanted to learn piano. I could play chords, and some melodies, but realized, I would never progress without understanding the theory. So I am starting from square one, and doing it the right way. Understanding Music theory, has made my piano practice so much easier, understanding the theory behind what I am doing. Keep up the great videos. I'll be watching!

      I am in a similar situation though have never really played piano, other than just punching on some keys. I am 66, played flute in my youth, but never understood the theory, and never understood chordal changes. I just played by ear and got fairly good at hearing. Could play most of the rock stuff I heard but could NEVER play jazz because I did not understand chordal theory. I recently picked up an Akai EWI instrument but found myself heading to the same spot I was in when I was younger and finally decided to tackle learning to play piano and to learn chordal theory. I am at the very beginning of my journey and it should be fun. No expectations, not worried about my progress, it will come.

    I have the DGX. One of the best instruments in the world. It has a cool CFX voice, VRM which brings out the true resonance of a grand piano, and styles, which allow you to play all genres of western music. Though I do wish Yamaha also gave a nice Bosendorfer piano voice for the DGX-670 and ethnic styles like Indian, Chinese and Arabic styles.

    Got one 3 years ago, after lots of research and reviews. Tremendous capabilities for price range. only lacks decent Audio in/out as it only has a headphone jack. With small mixer feeding Good sets of Full range and Subwoofer (mixer with FX) DRAMATICALLY improves Audio capabilities over pathetical small built in speakers. Huge assortment of Audio Samples and hords of features (hard to remember how to use them all). WOrks great with MIDI too. DGX-670.

    I bought the DGX-670 a while back when it first came out and was on sale at Guitar Center for under $800.
    Honestly, I wasn't even in the market for a digital piano made for the home consumer market especially in light of already owning a Yamaha CP-88.
    But when I walked in to Guitar Center, there it was and I was curious enough to want to sit down and play it. The next thing I know, over two hours passed by and I was blown away enough to pick it up.
    What really blew me away was the GHS action of the Keybed. Even though the keys aren't wood like the keybed of the CP88, it's actually more than adequate and feels good to play.
    But the secret sauce for me is the main VRM piano patches AND the onboard send and master effects. The reverb for instance is quite remarkable as you can also dial up the reverb granularly from the menu. It's no blue sky type of reverb mind you but it sounds fantastic. The compression settings on the master output is also quite good.
    that and the articulation voices and layering capabilities could make this a backup or poor man's stage piano (if I had no other option). It's also currently my main weighted keys midi controller at the moment and it works really well with the Pianoteq 8 Stage Plugin.
    If I had to, I'd buy again. For practice it's a killer piano but it's so much more that if you can get into it and dial it up to your preference and feel especially as a solid midi controller.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +2

      Yeah this piano is amazing - it’s gonna take me a long time to really dig in but I’m looking forward to it! And yes the GHS action just feels so playable and solid - lots of people criticize Yamaha for not updating it, but - if it’s not broken don’t fix it!

    Great video! Thank you for showing all these functionality so clearly! I just got mine! It is awesome!!! I learn playing the piano on line. So far, I have bluetooth connected my tablet to the dgx670 and use the headphone Jack to link to my headphone(bluetooth enabling). But it would be great if I can have sound from my tablet and the dgx 670 through one bluetooth headphone simultaneously. Is it possible?

    Beginner buyers of this DGX or any piano or synthesizer, should know...the more complex the front panel looks (full of buttons and knobs/sliders) the easier it is to use. And like this DGX, a large color menu to aid in communication with this instrument makes it the perfect combination of tactile control and menu control. Meaning, it doesn't get any simpler than this when controlling all the features of this instrument. Yes, for anyone wanting to buy a piano tone only, the front panel controls should be 1000x easier to use than what is available today; or at least the option of adding a controller for an added price. Personally, I believe all digital pianos should be just a keyboard, then you buy the sound device separately; this would make for the ideal condition of choosing you preferred action and sound. You could choose Roland for your keyboard action and then add a Yamaha sound module for the sound. You could also add 2 or 3 different sound modules and use each for their strengths without having to pay for and the space for 3 more keyboards. Today's technology would make this a very simple idea.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +2

      I think alot of people do go that route; buy a fully weighted MIDI controller with action they like and then whatever sound banks they like. Kind of surprising that the big manufacturers like Yamaha, Roland, Casio haven't gone that route themselves (Yamaha makes a MIDI controller with GHS or NWX action, Roland with PHA4 etc); but maybe that would hurt their "built in sound" piano market too much.
      Thanks!

    awesome video! I recently got the DGX 670 myself after much careful research of all available competitor options (I eventually realized that the competing pianos paled in comparison to what the DGX can offer at this price level). Having finally received this piano, booooy was I blown away by just how good it is. Now, I've been trying to figure out how to record videos of me playing but I only have my iphone to record with.
    May I ask a question (as I am not tech savvy) - what kind of cable did you use to record this video with your iphone? did you use a "printer-type" USB cable to connect to the "USB to host" port located behind the piano? or did you use a generic USB to phone cable and connected it to the USB slot located on the front panel of the piano? and did you also use a specific app on your phone to record this video? or just the generic camera app on the iphone? I would love to have this quality of recording.
    Looking forward to your next videos on the DGX 670!

    Great, you finally got the DGX-670. I'm writing this as I watch your video. You already covered one of my main concerns. The key action. From your assessment, and watching you play, I think it will do just fine for me. I don't want anything too heavy. (For example, the Casio Privia Pro PX560 key action is pretty heavy. I think that I'll like the DGX action better, even though the PX560 is a better keyboard in some other regards. But then the PX560 costs a lot more.) Regarding the white key surfaces on the 670 being smooth, I don't think that will be a problem for me, but I wonder if they could be safely roughed up in some way. The 16-track sequencer, the user interface, and the flash drive port in the front are great features. My only question is whether the DGX 670 can record sequencer audio to flash drive. Or is it like the ew425, which can't? I do like that I can play .wav files of tunes that I like from the flash drive of the ew425 that I've put on a USB stick.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +3

      Hey Thomas! Just tested that out and yes you can! I recorded some rhythms and chords to a MIDI track stored on the piano; then I went into USB audio record mode (which only records to the flash drive) and just clicked play on the MIDI song area and voila! Works like a charm; I played along with the MIDI output as well, and it all landed nicely on the flash drive as a single audio file. Basically I think it would work on the 425 if they had made separate controls for recording/playing MIDI and recording playing audio (instead of combining them into a shared set of buttons); on the DGX they are in 2 separate places so it works nicely. The MIDI/sequencer section is controlled by buttons in the top left, the audio recording and playback is controlled by a set of "virtual" buttons that appear on the screen that you control with the context sensitive buttons under the screen.
      As far as the key action, I love the GHS and even though the surface is smooth, I don't find it slippery at all. Actually my Casiotone CT-S1 keyboard (which I do really like) has a matte finish, but to be honest I find it MORE slippery than the smooth keys on the DGX; the more keyboards I test and play, the more I start to think it's more about the material the keys are made of than whether it has a matte finish or not.

    • @TheMg49
      @TheMg49 Год назад +1

      @@PianoTone Thanks Tony. That's good news. The DGX-670 is going to be an early 2023 present to myself. Regarding the keys, yeah, you might well be correct about the material vs the finish. I think I remember a keyboard review video where the reviewer said that slicker finishes on keys can actually become stickier with extended play, and that that is what the matte finish helps resist. Anyway, I've never had a problem with, for example, the ew425 key finish, which I suppose is similar to the DGX-670 even though the action is different. I've played the ew425 for about 3 hours straight at the longest, with no problems.

      Thanks so much! You use a USB cable (like a normal printer cable) and an Apple Lightning Adapter to connect to the iPad. So no you don’t need an external audio interface to send audio to garage band. Also note that audio goes both directions - so if you are listening to other tracks, let’s say a drum track in GarageBand while you record you may want to turn audio loop back off on the piano. Otherwise the drums you’re listening to will get sent back to the iPad and also get included in the piano track. Hope that helps!

    Hi Tony. Thanks f🎉your DGX-670 videos. I'm a new owner and loving it. Have a question. I wonder why Yamaha didn't include Bluetooth OUT. I have Bluetooth studio monitors and it would be awesome to be able to send the audio from the DGX to my speakers or to headphones wirelessly. That would also help to address it not having full TRS output jacks. Can't really understand why they didn't provide this since it already allows Bluetooth IN so the necessary hardware should already be present. Any ideas why they didn't do this? Do you know of any devices that can attach to the 1/4" headphone OUT jack and then stream to Bluetooth? Seems like there should be something available. Appreciate anything you have on this. Thanks.

      Thanks so much! I'm actually not sure I've ever seen a piano/keyboard with BlueTooth audio OUT before; I'm assuming it would be because it would be laggy. Some keyboard have BlueTooth MIDI out (so you can send keypresses to a MIDI app on a device which has sounds built in) but I've always found BlueTooth MIDI to be too laggy to be of any use. Don't know of any devices that do that either (I know of the ones that RECEIVE BlueTooth audio but never seen one that sends it - might be out there . . .)

      The grand piano sound on the DGX is a totally different level than the 425; it’s amazing. The piano on the 425 is impressive for the price, but the DGX has far more polyphony and a far more detailed sample (pretty much all the sounds on the DGX are considerably higher quality). The DGX is also almost twice the price though.

  • @summer-in-stereo

    Hey mate, great vid (as always) - I've got a question but I think I already know the answer haha - would dig your opinion though.
    I'm a solo acoustic musician as my main source of income - but I write synthwave music and want to take that idea, 80s synth inspired tracks and covers and gig those instead, on keys. I can play keys at a high enough level for this (I started playing music on keys).
    Anyway - I want to know your 2c on the right choice for this idea - within the context of it being a one-man-band.
    Both the DGX670 and EW425 (and SX600) will let me do this with premade accompaniment - that's fine I supposed, can always save for a higher-end synth and a looper or whatever to do everything my way building from scratch in a year or two.
    But right now, I want to do that, with grooves/styles - I play 4 hour gigs, usually 2-3x per week, and the instrument would also be used to record things at home (maybe not piano practice.. I have a digital piano with 88 weighted keys for that).
    What would you recommend for the very actively gigging musician, for a one-man-band?
    The DGX670 seems a bit heavy considering how often I play so I think just based on weight alone, I know the answer.
    But I'm curious to know if the DGX670 has something that makes it worth hauling that extra weight around, for people like myself that gig often.
    I also have another question for any arranger keyboard - maybe it's not your forte but, how would you go about making sure the right grooves/styles match the song?
    Can you set up like a setlist in the keyboards?
    My thinking is just.. have notes on my phone/tablet about the grooves/tempos and just quickly dial them in in-between songs - would obviously work, but if there's a smoother way to run through a setlist that these keyboards might have, I'd love to know about that too.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +1

      Hey sorry for the later reply! Your comment landed in my RUclips spam (no idea why!) and I just saw it. Given how much you are gigging (unless you have roadies ;) I'd be leaning the 425 (or the SX600 if you want to spend that much more and need fancier arranger features) - not only is the DGX 50 lbs, but it's big and bulky as well, and it doesn't have L/R line outs for connecting to PAs etc (you can use the headphone port, but that's not the best). I just bought the stand for it and even moving that around and getting it set up wasn't fun.
      Just to complicate things though, the DGX has a ton of features I've already discovered (and I haven't even gotten really started in learning all that this thing can do) that would actually be great for a performer:
      - the accompaniment is light years ahead; options for shorter intros and endings (the 425's are massively long), 4 variations vs 2, etc
      - unlimited registrations instead of 32 (that's how I would deal with changes on your gigs between songs; use an app like SongBook Pro - I have a review on my channel it's awesome; you can display lyrics, chords even start and stop a backing track from within, but you can make set lists in there and add notes to the top like "Reg #26 etc"
      - setlists (I haven't looked into this yet but I know it has them)
      - FIFTY things you can do with the triple pedal unit + sustain (start and stop rhythms, switch variations, throw in percussion like cymbal crashes, modulation or rotary, the list is insane); and there is a 3rd party portable triple pedal on Amazon I've HEARD works OK but I haven't tested it
      I haven't played an SX600 but from what I understand it's arranger features are more on par with the DGX but it's much more portable, BUT it seems insanely $$$ to me, it's way more than the DGX is with basically the same brain but no weighted action.
      So I guess since you have a weighted piano at home for piano practice, I'd probably still lean to the EW425 (lineouts, bigger speakers, less than half the weight, and the onboard mic mute/talk/effects button is awesome; DGX can do those things but it's in the menu), unless you REALLY need the fancier arranger features in which case either be ok hauling around a beast of a keyboard or pay more for the SX600?
      Hope that helps and sorry again for the late response!
      Let me know what you decide!

I suppose you could record a vocal track, play it back using BlueTooth or the aux in, and then record a new audio track that includes it with another vocal layer, but I doubt that's what you're after.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi Tony, This is an excellent video giving lot of details about this beautiful instrument and I am watching this to make my purchase decision. I found your video very helpful.
    Currently, I own Yamaha P-140 digital piano and I want to upgrade. But, my wish-list is big ;-)
    (1) Great CFX Piano Sound with 88 GHS Keys for good Piano playing experience.
    (2) Built-in Workstation/Arranger Capability with 16-Track Linear Sequencer
    (3) A True Synthesizer with Multi-Sampling Capability. (DGX-670 is not in this league.)
    I am stuck in choosing between Yamaha DGX-670 and Yamaha MODX8+.
    Though, I know that DGX-670 is not a Synthesizer and Yamaha MODX8+ has almost everything that I am looking for, one big DGX-670 feature of recording Audio directly to USB Flash Drive is still missing on Yamaha MODX8+ ! I simply can't ignore DGX-670 even if it's not a Synthesizer.
    Do you have any experience and opinion for Yamaha MODX8+ Synthesizer? It too has 88 GHS Keys and CFX Piano sounds. I am having a hard-time to make a choice and accept the "Tradeoff".

      Thanks so much! And sorry but I don't have any experience with Yamaha's MOD or MX line of keyboards; the flash drive recording is super handy. Other things to consider: looking at the specs for the MOD, it has L/R lineouts which if you plan to use the keyboard to perform/gig with, the DGX only has a headphone out (the L/R outs are better for that). And lastly, does the MOD have a built in USB audio interface? The DGX does which is also a very handy feature (can send audio direct to a recording device / app like a camera app on a phone or a DAW on a pc etc) without needing an external audio interface.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out the channel, and feel free to subscribe (I'm betting you have already ;)

      @@PianoTone No problem and Thank you very much for reverting.
      Yes, your observation for L/R Line-outs is another important aspect to take decision.
      Yahama MODX+ can send Audio data to DAW through "MIDI To Host" and actually it can also record performance (What you play) on USB Drive in Audio format. So yes it has Audio Interface.
      But I need to do a research on whether we can play already recorded complete MIDI Song file on the MODX+ and can send its Audio data directly to USB Drive or not, because I read someone mentioning that its not possible as Buttons for Playing Midi Songs and Recording Audio are shared. But I need to validate it.
      Thanks once again for great video! I think mostly I will go for DGX-670! 🙂

    Thx,nice demo,I’ve had this keyboard a couple years now,I’d like to upgrade maybe to psr xs900,only problem is I like 88 fully weighted keys,guess I would also have to buy a controller to have that setup,I got this mainly for the accompaniment,I like playing with a beat and rythym section,know of any other keyboards with that functionality?dgx is great but I want a more advanced rythym section with more optional drum beats and backing,as this is rather limited in that respect,I I guess the korg arranger keyboards are pretty good,but I heard the learning curve can be quite a chore,I’m not much of a techie.

      For fully weighted keys but good arranger features, I don't know of one better than the DGX myself. I haven't had the chance to see the Korg XE20, but I owned an EK50 (non weighted) and it had good arranger features, but nowhere near that of the DGX670 (and from what I understand, the arranger features on the EK50 are similar to that on the XE20). I also owned a Casio PX-S3000 and I did like that piano, mostly for the combo of portability with arranger features, but it's still not as full featured as the DGX.
      As far as I know, if you wanted weighted keys with higher end arranger features then yes you'd need to find the arranger keyboard with the features you want and then get a controller with weighted keys.

    After being wowed by this phenomenal Yamaha DGX-670 digital piano/keyboard with so many sounds and features, I have one basic question: How long will it go before malfunctioning? I have owned many Yamaha PSR keyboards, and as much as I have loved them all, I have been disappointed with the ultimate breakdowns (now with about four that I cannot use in performance anymore). What is the durability of this keyboard? My use of this monster keyboard will be live performance, maybe five times a week, moving from place to place, and also in studio. How long will it last before needing repair...the motherboard, key response, LED panel - issues I have had with my $200-$300 Yamaha PSR keyboards? Love your simple demonstration and review.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +4

      Hi there! To be honest I haven't put any of my keyboards through as much as what it sounds like you have (live performances multiple times a week) so not really fair for me to comment on that. What I can say is after 3 years of buying, selling and renting keyboards I honestly haven't had ANY keyboard that I've owned have anything fail, but my gut feeling on overall quality on a brand by brand basis I would put Yamaha 1st, Korg 2nd, then Roland/Casio about the same - following that would be Alesis, iNovus and then Donner at the bottom.
      The DGX is without a doubt far more substantially built than the PSR series, but it would be a beast to have to move around that much - it's bulky and weighs 50 lbs (also doesn't have line outs for performing - you'd need to connect to amps/PA with the headphone out; works, but not as ideal).
      I have a P-125 as well that I absolutely love, and it's far more portable at half the weight, but it's not an arranger. If you need arranger features live, I have heard the higher end Yamaha PSR arrangers (SX600,700,900) are sturdier built than the E series but to be honest haven't tried one.
      Last thing I'll mention (sorry for rambling) is Roland has a new arranger with weighted keys that looks very impressive (even though I find their action to be too heavy for my liking) but you might want to check it out: Roland FP-E50 (I talk about it briefly at the end of my recent review on the Roland FP-30X.

    I am currently looking into getting my first keyboard and have narrowed it down to either the DGX 670 or the Ew425 - Is there a reason one is bettter than the other. ( ie ew425 is newer has little more voices - 670 is older but has 88 weighted keys etc). What can you tell me. Thank you for your videos !!!!!!!!!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +2

      I have both and they're both awesome. The DGX is almost twice the price (at least where I live), for that you get:
      - fully weighted graded hammer action keys
      - significantly higher quality voices (way more polyphony, better/more complex samples, virtual resonance modeling for piano voices
      - much more advanced arranger features
      - unlimited registrations, triple pedal compatible, better user interface
      The EW425 has the following benefits:
      - great voices and arranger features (for the price!)
      - great user interface (again for the the price)
      - far more portable (smaller in size and weighs 18 lbs as opposed to 50 lbs; the DGX is a beast)
      - bigger speakers; not necessarily better sounding, but more powerful (24 watts vs 12)
      - can run on BATTERIES!
      - L/R line outs (the DGX only has a headphone which is not as good for connecting to an amp, PA system etc)
      So basically, if you don't care about not having weighted piano action (the synth action on the 425 is VERY light), AND you want to perform with your keyboard, the 425 might be a better option because it's light, can run on batteries, has bigger speakers and the L/R line outs. Conversely, if you do want or are/want to be "used to" playing a realistic piano action and don't intend to take the piano to perform, then the DGX is the way to go (the lack of the L/R line outs doesn't matter if it is staying at home).
      You mentioned this would be your first keyboard; have you tested out the feel of keyboards in stores before? If not you might want to go and play around on a weighted key digital piano as opposed to a keyboard. They're very different; I personally find I can be more expressive on the DGX than on a synth action like the 425 (more granular control of how hard you are hitting the keys and how loud the sound is as a result).
      So I finally decided to make the DGX 670 my main home studio piano (and I LOVE it); now I'm trying to decide if I want to keep the 425 as a gigging keyboard or if going back and forth between fully weighted and synth will be challenging for me.
      Sorry for the long response, I hope this helps!

    Will the lack of a proper left and right connection affect any sort of sound quality? When I perform, I usually use one connection anyways and apparently, you can change the setting to a line out, so I'm assuming it keeps the same quality?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +3

      Hey there! Actually the DGX-670 doesn't have the ability to switch from headphone to line level anymore (the DGX-660 did have this feature). You can set the output level of the headphones, but there is no "switch to line level" anymore, so I'm not sure this is any different than just an extra gain (or less) gain option. Whether that can take the output to a line level or not I don't know (I might need to contact Yamaha about that and see); given that it is still being amplified I would GUESS that it can't (and I think it's a safe bet that making alterations to this level still won't create a summed L/R signal like you get out of just using an L port on a piano with L/R line outs).
      So you would need to use either a 1/8" TRS to 1/4" TR cables splitter and use 2 ports on whatever amp/pa you're using, or if your amp has a stereo input option like an aux in then you could take a 1/8" TRS to 1/8" or 1/4" TRS. It does work, but the quality won't be quite as good (although I know pro players who gig with headphone outs all the time and are fine with it).
      Personally I find the DGX to be way too bulky and heavy to move around anyways (50 lbs) - I bought a used P-125 for that reason; identical key action, great sounds, and half the weight with line outs.

      No, it means you can adjust the level of touch response to match your playing style, so that you can maximize your control over getting soft or loud sounds. I should be more specific. I am teaching myself to read fake books (mostly jazz standards). I've rented the fpE50, LOVE the accompaniment function but find the piano sound has a high pitched overtone on some notes that really bothers my ears. I had rented the fp30x as well and LOVED it. It didn't have the same issues with the piano sound. My second concern is: I love how large the chord is displayed on the FpE50 and noticed it is very very small on the Yamaha. Do you know if that can be made larger? Thank you!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 месяца назад +1

      @@utensil7granny I didn't notice a big difference in the main piano sound between the E50 and 30X (but didn't test them side by side); maybe some extra effects on the E50 enabled? You can't adjust the display size on the DGX. I did a review on the E50 here (which has a comparison at the end that includes the DGX): ruclips.net/video/r2I973DiNsA/видео.html
      The big difference to me is the E50 is more portable, has L/R lineouts, and has the chord chart functionality the Yamaha doesn't.

    I've had my 670 for over a year now, and my only regret is that I don't spend enough time on the thing. The one secret I'm dying to learn is: what's the magic button combination you have to hold down when powering it up that enables one to take screenshots and save them to a thumbdrive? This can be done with other Yamaha keyboards, but it's apparently Top-Top-Top Secret (assuming it is indeed possible; it seems highly unlikely that the screenshots included in the manuals are simulated) and nobody has figured it out yet.

      I own a DGX-670 and it is amazing; I personally would never but the P-S500; I think it is far too expensive - it is almost twice the price of the DGX, and if you offered either to me for free I would choose the DGX. I don't think the "falling note" lights (synthesia style) is a good way to learn piano - it's not teaching you anything, it's like a video game.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  9 месяцев назад +2

      The P-515 has L/R outputs so for connecting to external devices (audio interfaces, amps, PA etc) that will be better quality than the headphone out on the DGX-670 (it has no lineouts; headphone outs are a "dirtier" signal, usually amplified). For recording my reviews though, both pianos have audio interfaces built into the USB ports so that is how I recorded both of them (which is a very clean direct signal).

    Yes, the greatest sounding speakers ever on a portable piano...but...still not great compared to the sound of good studio quality headphones or near field monitors. To make great sound from speakers isn't associated with amplification watts, but from providing recovery amplification from peak outputs, and pianos have lots of peak output. Speakers drivers and the cabinets they reside in, along with the resistance (OHMs) tune the sound and require the proper amount of amp watts. So amplifier specifications on a home piano don't mean much. Volume: I doubt any home piano is going to exceed the sound of an acoustic grand piano for volume. Great sound comes from clean amplification and fast recovery, cabinet size, driver quality, tuned cabinet (ported or not), crossover quality, and DACs Digital to analog converter, and pre-amp quality.

    Just got this today but have a problem with the sustain. The sustain only seems to work with piano voices for other voices like strings it only holds the note for a couple seconds. This is a limitation that is a problem as my other higher end keyboards don’t have this problem.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  6 месяцев назад +1

      Do you mean when you are using a sustain pedal and it is depressed the strings do not sustain? Or do you mean it has a fast natural decay when not holding the pedal? I've always found Yamaha does a far better job than the competition of not having strings (when layered with a piano) keep getting too loud and overpowering the piano.
      Couple things to check - if it is when using the pedal you are referring to; make sure sustain pedal is not turned off/set to control something else; and also you can (within the "Voice Set" menu) adjust the decay rate of any voice.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

    • @kosomolsk
      @kosomolsk Месяц назад

      I think that's not the DGX, that's Yamaha. If you are getting instantaneous release without the pedal and with the pedal it's about 2-3 seconds, then it is very similar to how my PSR-E373 handles the situation. Since strings don't have sustain pedals, there's no right or wrong answer but other companies have different doctrines and it's a matter of preference.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +1

      @@gouthaml895 I think that is the way it is supposed to behave by default (because a string instrument has no "sustain pedal" so it should have a natural decay). What you might want to try is to edit the strings voice (using "Voice Set") and alter the release (make it a bigger number) to try and get the behaviour you want.
      Hope that helps!
