- Elly Ameling singing Schubert's 'Du bist die Ruh' (Op. 59 No. 3, D776) with Dalton Baldwin accompanying. From the album 'German Romantic Songs' released in the late 70s.
Du bist die Ruh,
Der Friede mild,
Die Sehnsucht du
Und was sie stillt.
Ich weihe dir
Voll Lust und Schmerz
Zur Wohnung hier
Mein Aug und Herz.
Kehr ein bei mir,
Und schließe du
Still hinter dir
Die Pforten zu.
Treib andern Schmerz
Aus dieser Brust!
Voll sei dies Herz
Von deiner Lust.
Dies Augenzelt
Von deinem Glanz
Allein erhellt,
O füll es ganz!
-----
You are peace,
The mild peace,
You are longing
And what stills it.
I consecrate to you
Full of pleasure and pain
As a dwelling here
My eyes and heart.
Come live with me,
And close
quietly behind you
the gates.
Drive other pain
Out of this breast
May my heart be full
With your pleasure.
The tabernacle of my eyes
by your radiance
alone is illumined,
O fill it completely! Видеоклипы
Wenn`mir schlecht geht, höre ich mir diese Stimme an und schon geht`s mir besser!
Great! I love it, Ameling!
I love it!!
I love how this song is just love... not some tragedy or drama... just the state of being completely in love
this made me cry, and I don't cry easily over music... it's just perfect
It is like hearing Elisabeth Schumann: the warmth of the voice, the perfect intonation, the control and the feeling.
Elly Ameling is one of the great Schubert lieder singers ....it doesn't get much better than this....does it ???
Heart stoppingly beautiful...
the tempo!!! small enough voice and what she's doing here is impossible to fake. very special genius.
She makes it sound so easy and natural (even if it's a difficult lied). A pleasure to listen to!
After listening to several unbelievably skilful versions (e.g. Caballe, Janowitz) it is lovely to return to this unforced naturalness. We are with Schubert, his poet and the world they are embodying - Ameling and Baldwin are merely the conduits for these. Their ego-free interpretation is something to treasure and brings us to the essence of what is Schubertian.
+Melvyn Elphee. Your comment is a worthy appraisal of this lovely recording.
My senior project for my undergrad music major was a study and performance of Die schoene Muellerin. I came across a letter of Schubert's (I forget to whom) in which he complained about over-dramatized performances of his songs (esp. with lots of rubato). He said it was all there on the page, it didn't need anything but a faithful rendering. In other words, just like Ameling.
Sacred and divine song..
Elly Ameling always sing with sensitivity and beauty.
Learned this song in high school, so much fun to sing. I love singing in German :p
wunderschönes Lied und sehr gefühlvoll gesungen.
I like that she chose to sing it in the lower key
wat kun je daar nog op zeggen .... prachtig! ik heb zo genoten, dank je voor het delen:)
Perfection.....
une version magique et magnifique
d'accord. c'est magnifique!..... j'aime ça! c'est très beau!
My German voice teacher told me I sounded just like her - this from the teacher who never gave compliments. 😊
I'm learning it even lower. Dat Mezzo life.
Merci beaucoup to Tom Westbrook....she is a wonder to behold and to hear. I remember when she sang this among other lieder at my college. I was backstage, watching her as she sang. I love her! However, I also love fischer-dieskau's interpretation of this, in combination with the great Gerald Moore. Also, to those discussing the "key".... Schubert originally composed this in the key of E flat Major. et.... cette "version" est.... au-delà de la beauté en....Merci!
Thank you so much for posting as this album is simply not available.
Pude senti-la no fundo da alma.
Traducción al español del sensual poema de Friedrich Rückert, con la música profundamente espiritual de Schubert:
Tú eres el reposo
la paz agradable.
Tú eres la nostalgia
y lo que la aquieta.
A ti me consagro
lleno de dicha y de dolor,
aquí hallarán su morada
mis ojos y mi corazón.
Entra en mi casa
y cierra tras de ti
las puertas,
con cuidado.
¡Expulsa todo pesar
de este pecho!
Que mi corazón se llene
con tu dicha.
Este templo ocular
lo ha iluminado
tu solo fulgor
¡Oh, llénalo a rebosar!
I agree! When I realized it was a little trickier than I thought, I thought I was being punished for calling it 'simple.'
I'm learning this song. And it's harder them you would think. Lol
Qué tranquilidad, dicha y nostalgia entremezcladas magníficamente
Yeah, so it is. I remember I sang this in Es-Dur, and here she killed the pianist with the Des-Dur version. Damn lot of flats! But sounds very pretty, it has now a very different mood in this key. I even like it better.

As a mezzo, I might just do it in Bes....but try and find the transcriptions for piano in all these different versions. As a pianist you have to be either a genius who can transpose in the blind as you go along, or you need a transposing software programme like Sibelius, and even then it is a lot of work, writing teh score out note for note, because even the best software programma cannot scan most older scores without faults. (If anyone knew of such software, Id be most obliged, really.
.
Yeah, :) Lower than the original, but I've also seen a version in B flat major (which would be a minor third lower).
This IS the lower key? Oh my.
With one exception, equal though, which is: Peter Schreier...
@Addaisl
Piangi Addaisa, piangi
What key is this arrangement in?
Jestiny Lee, C-dur. for MS.
