Keep in mind, this is the same owl that killed and ate a barred owl the other day - probably destroying a barred owl nest in the process - as well as a red tail hawk. It cuts both ways....
What the hawk did is called raking. It's where they swoop by and try to either cut something up, or nock ot out of a tree with they're feet. It probably just saw the mess od feathers in the nest and took interest to what was left in it. Once the GHO shows it's size, the hawk would probably know better than to start a fight. The raking technique is interesting though. I know this becuase I have Red Tail that used this same technique on the back of my head because it was hungry and tired of flying.
Wow, first that flyover by that Cooper's Hawk the other day, and now this. I'm sure momma's tough enough to shake off a few attacks by smaller birds, but I am worried they might start targeting the baby. Seems like this territory has a lot of apex predators competing with one another.
Here in NJ a few years ago, a Red Tail attacked Bald Eagle nest for the chicks but was killed by the Eagle (Duke Farms). Today, we had a Red Tail kill a Crow in the front yard. Was a bit big for it but the Red Tail did fly away with the dead Crow. Normally, we see Red Tails with Squirrels and the Cooper's with Sparrows and Chipmunks.
Just came from a video of a great horned attacking and snatching hawk chicks out of their nest while the mother was in blind terror. Nature is brutal and a power struggle 🫢
It doesn't matter how many times I view that scene; I jump out of my chair even though I know everything will be ok. I agree with a previous comment: How does the owl leave to go get food for owlet, when she knows there are predators lurking?
Just had a nest with 3 20-25 day old owlets get knocked out of the nest by a single hawk. All 3 are at a owl permitted facility. 100-125' fall for each of them!
Everyone always claims Great Horned owl will destroy Red-tailed hawks. Seen a Red-tailed completely hammer a Great Horned owl on a golf course. Goes both ways.
@@JayWil771 long story short, a Great Horned owl was completely destroyed by a Red Tail hawk. Took it out of the air, grabbing it by the left wing. Slammed in into the Turf and then damn near decapitated it. Was frickin awesome to witness. Probably never see that kind of encounter again. The owl never flew that I saw, but we continued playing so never saw how it ended.
They are feathers from a barred owl that the mother brought back to the nest a couple nights ago. I think there is video on that as well. It was about as big as she is. It's a tough neighborhood!
Why is it Dads are never around when it comes to protecting the nest? It seems with raptors the females are the ones who guard & protect the little ones. Is it because they are bigger than the male? LOL
This female owl has had some serious challenges this year. Hopefully, she continues to persevere through fledging.
I'm still waiting for the osprey to show up....
If she didn't stay guard the nest, the chick would be gone.
I'm so glad that hawk didn't target the owlet!
That's what I've been afraid of when I have seen the owlet left by itself for long periods of time. Glad Mom was there!
Look like a few may have been snatched already
Oh I'm praying that Momma Owl is successful with keeping her baby safe. I think she is beautiful and her owlet is so sweet and vulnerable. ❤️
Those hawks are vicious, it's a good thing it didn't hit or swoop up the owlet. Poor mama...Praying that you both stay safe!

@@DoubleDogDare54 exactly...Horned owls give other raptors absolute hell @ night
@@DoubleDogDare54 this owl ate a red tailed Hawk as well?

The baby is getting so big! I love watching this cam!🖖💕
Wow! So glad she and her owlet are safe

What an awesome mom! You go, girl!
The owl, will likely get revenge, when night arrives. Stay Tune!!!
Serves it right- it does the same thing at night to other birds.
True,what comes around goes around!
animals are not evil? They do NOT do revenge?
They are not like some humans?
I was watching live when this happened!
The hawk is using some kind of a ploy to get Mom owl off the nest. Super glad that ploy didn't work. Prayers that Mom and owlet will be safe.

Oh heck no! The mama owl meant business! Back off, hawk!
The hawk meant business. Back off of her chick's at night, owl!
Wow. Glad the lil owlet wasn't the target
Damn, Nature! You scary!
WHOA!! She got hit again!! I'm glad the baby is okay!! 👍👍
You go, mama! Makes me worry for the mom and the owlet.
Crazy. I noticed the owlet has been laying low all day today into this evening. Now I know why.

Wow! That was a close call!
So glad baby OK. Stay vigilant mom.
ouch!! poor mom :(
Poor owl! I'm glad it wasn't preying on the owlet (I'm guessing this is territorial?), but that looks painful and frightening.
go watch some footage of Bald Eagles as being harassed by these same species of Owls
at night. They give as good as they get!
These owls do plenty of attacks at night- I say it's good- they get a taste of their own medicine
@@remyogun8270 I follow those cams too. It's sad to see. Nature is beautiful but very harsh.
Wow thank you ❤️ Wonderful
Ouch, that was a serious hit.
That hawk's been hanging around. I've been afraid it would go after the baby.
Wow that was a close call! She had better put wings over the fledging. Hawk is going to get the fledging!
Wow! That sure is hard to watch.. :(
No remorse. Great Horned Owls are notorious to drive bys like that.
Tough life for a bird. They have to be savages!!
3/20 and Mom has been gone 12+ hours. I worry with all these hits on the nest and Mama.
Owl:Nice try,featherbrain!
Man the bird world is a crazy thing my goodness
Scary!
*Hawk wants it's nest back*

Wow, adult was literally knocked over. It really swooped in…hopefully won’t return when the owlet is alone…luckily Mom wasn’t
Is her right eye okay? Pupil looks misshapen. Kind of worrying
Oh no, poor mama and baby!
This is the 2nd time attack by the hawk for this season
Have to say re-watching this that this nest is very exposed
Didn't that Redtail try the same thing a few weeks ago? That poor owl has been having a rough time raising her one chick.
Just wait until the sun goes down Mr Hawk
Dad is no longer close to them?
She would dispose of the hawk if it landed .Great Horned owls actually prey on adult red tailed hawks . The owl is much stronger .
Mom GHO took a hit. Bad hawk!
Qwlet once again was very lucky. I hope that the hawk will stop its attacks.

Elaborate my friend

I wish she would shelter that little owlet!! She better!
I'm starting to dislike that Red Tail
Wow. So much epic drama at this site. Entertaining for us...not so much for the owls.
Plenty of drama here in the comments too.
When the parent was still with the 🐣 ...I 💭 they always grab the 🐣 when they're alone 😶 the ospreys had lost many 🐣 in that situation 💐 ...

How do you know it hasn't fended off numerous other attacks? You've seen two hits on mom. There could easily be more if dad wasn't around.
Glad she getting attacked, I’ve seen owls raid that many nests at night , what goes around comes around
wait for the night... her turn it will be massacre
maybe it was after the squirrel
Makes you wonder just how many chick did this owl really had?
Damn another flyby!
Momma 🦉will get revenge
I am glad that hit was a failure.
Wuauuu!!!que horror😱😱que ave fue esa 🤔se quería llevar al polluelo al rato la mama se fue y dejo solo al polluelo😱😱espero que nada pase 🙏🙏
