- My favorite way to carve spoons, and a good craft for sitting around the campfire with friends!
Now, carving a spoon probably wont help you survive, but this same ancient technique can be used in life saving ways. On a larger scale, you can make burn bowls from logs to boil water in with hot rocks, which was often done in ancient times!

Ok that was too cool…. I've carved many spoons and forks and even a couple of "butter" knives in my day… but I have never used a coal like that to "carve" out the bowl portion of a spoon… Guess what I’m doing on my next campout with my scouts! 😂

Can the same process be done to make a bowl for those who don't have clay?
I would assume so. However, the great advantage of a clay bowl is that it’s fireproof. Andy Ward has some great videos on making pottery using traditional methods from the southwest, from finding wild clay through the whole process.
