When I bought my Welsh Cob, he came off the lorry and went straight into a grass paddock, I didn't go in with him, he just had twice daily checks and feeds through the fence for the first week. The the second week I started hanging around, letting him figure me out. Then he wanted to come and contact me, he then trusted me enough to go with me into his stable. We had a great 10yr partnership having fun like games of chase & hide 'n' seek! At a local show I fell in the ring while cantering, he slipped in long grass and I went out the side door! He ran off round the back of the line up in a panic, calling. He could easily have run for the exit, instead he heard me calling him and trotted away from it, passed the front of the other horses lined up and headed to where I was still sitting in the wet grass looking very relieved! To me he was actually a friend not just a horse.... 💜❤️

😄 My mares are off and on. One day they want to hang on me and even the bully gelding can't push them away. The next day I'm perplexed when I'm offering to give them attention and they just walk off. Mares are like Jr. High girlfriends.

The suggestion to simply be in pasture and appear disinterested aligns with whatever is going on in my horses' heads. I often feel guilty that I have so many projects going on that I don't give the individuals in my herd as much attention as they'd like, and me being in pasture for reasons having nothing to do with them for days at a time seems to be a huge draw for a small herd. (I'm in a continuous battle with invasive thorn trees for example, cutting and hauling them to burn piles.) They crowd into my work space seeking attention, and to say they're desensitized to tools and farm equipment wouldn't describe the extent of it. There are few things more surprising and startling than kneeling at the base of a tree with a chainsaw running wide open and having a horse sneak up behind you to nibble on your collar. Whatever they're thinking, there's definitely a large truth about being in proximity without seeking interaction that raises their interest in you and causes them to seek a connection.

From my observations, newcomers especially buy horses to fulfill some personal need which is not good news for the horses.

it can be that way for sure.
