Michael Fassbender on the Troubles in Ireland

- Michael Fassbender portrayed Irish political prisoner Bobby Sands in his breakout role in a film called Hunger. While Fassbender grew up in the peaceful southern part of the country, he remembers well his trips to Northern Ireland -- his mother's birthplace -- to visit family. It's also where Bobby Sands, an enduring political icon, died while on a hunger strike. Here Michael Fassbender talks about what it was like to venture into the north as a child and how different it was from the way he lived.
He should have won an Oscar for playing Bobby Sands in 'Hunger'. One of the most thought provoking films and one of the most powerful performances. Northern Ireland is a verx special country with lots of tragic events in its history.
It's not a country. A bit like Narnia.

@kingericni He didn't sound like he was trying to say he was an expert. Where did you get that? He simply said is mother is from Northern Ireland, he spent Holidays there and he saw helicopters and the searches. He mentioned school stuff about how the education system is country based. He never claimed to be an expert. He explained HIS EXPERIENCE during the time. Why do people make a mountain out of nothing?
No one said he was an expert
He was absolutely amazing in his role as PIRA prisoner Bobby Sands in the movie "Hunger"... the scene in the movie where he plays Bobby Sands engaging in a deep conversation with a Catholic priest about the morality of what he & the other PIRA prisoners were about to do going on Hunger Strike was just amazingly intense...
I remember that shit to going from south to north soldiers Land Rover jeeps choppers..soldier's with English accents telling you what to do..our day will come

it is still the same sadly
The republican is doing far better than the UK
It’s probably up there in the global best in terms of modernity and inclusiveness
Michael is an actor, and a good one at that. He's probably tired of being asked the same questions a lot of Irish get asked frequently- ie "did you see the troubles?!" & "what part are you from?" "And is that in the North or the South?" Little known fact, the West and East of the country were dug up, removed and shipped off to parts of America and the North of England, hence the reason only the North and South only exist.
"Little known fact, the West and East of the country were dug up, removed and shipped off to parts of America and the North of England, hence the reason only the North and South only exist." I'm sorry, what? Could you elaborate on this?

He WAS Bobby Sands in "Hunger". How could you miss that?
Funny ending, too.
@@artvandelayRFC funny ending because the whole film was slanted to favor the Brittish side.
This movie was bullshit.
@@alanna8983 if anything it was critical of Britain, particularly England painting the English government in a negative light
@@alanna8983 I watched it yesterday and I don't see how you got from it that it favoured the British at all, there's not a single English character in the film that comes across well, only prison officers that abuse the inmates.

@SOCRATES012 YES. He was the lead in hunger.
It was rough going to the Republic during the Troubles. The roads were shite, you couldn't buy rubber johnnies and from what I could work out women were banned from shaving.

He was from the South. He was nowhere near it for fucks sake. Ohh soldiers checked the boot of his car lol? He was miles away from the shootings and bombings.
My family (Belfast) was in fear... the hotspot of it. My grandfather almost murderd and violated by the british army. I just wish he would understand that he was so lucky in comparison. And the anxiety my grandfather developed during the 70s, has passed on right to me ;(
He answered the question to which most of the time he spent answering it was mostly through education. He wasn't exaggerating, he just answered the question. Whats your problem? It's a small island. We were all affected by it in some way or another. Some more than others, of course. Sounds like you are playing a game of Oppression Olympics. You want a gold medal?

Did you miss the part where he said he often went up north for holidays?
Tell us again how far away he was?
Dickhead!
Why do you care so much? What is it that Fassbender is actually doing wrong here in your eyes? Young man, you sound like a 12yo kid.
He got asked a question and he answered it honestly. What's the big deal?
" I doubt he would have stayed in the likes of Belfast, South Armagh or Derry"
You have no idea where he went or what he experienced....so shut the fuck up and stop trying to play the bad man.
Im from Dublin but often visited my family in the North. Are you gonna tell me what I saw and where I went?
Hang on! He’s German! Where did he get the U2 accent?
He is born to a German dad and an Irish mother. He has lived in Ireland since he was 2. German name with Irish accent.
Sure that's like saying how did Leo from India get a posh Dublin accent

I have to take issue with Mr. Fassenbender concerning his claim that Ireland has "a great education system". This is simply not true for a large number of its citizens, and could only be applied to a significantly smaller number. In fact it could really only in truth be said to apply to those who have benefited from having come from monied parents and a private education. While I admire Mr. Fassenbender acting abilities, he really needs, when speaking, in public, about the State,, to be not putting about such. Misinformed and inaccurate opinion, as it does a great cdiservice to Ireland, and it"s citizens. and not least to the large numbers of men and women who were (and are being) left to try and get by in the world without, in fact, having been provided even a half decent education, much less "a great" one. 🙄😳
Very true. Take the Irish language as an example.
How did millions of Irish children over the last 80-90 years, go through anything from 8-14 years of primary and secondary education; yet leave without being barely able to speak or read a word of Irish?
@@bfc3057 I've stated an empirical fact. Barely anyone in Ireland (unlike other European countries) is bilingual, yet we all had between 8 and 14 years of Irish lessons.
Ireland does have a great education system. And public schools far out rank any private schools. Which means money is not a factor.
This Irish score is the highest in Europe and the fourth highest in the world, followed only by Korea, the Russian Federation and Canada.
The findings are contained in the OECD’s Education at Glance 2019 report which examines the performance of education systems in almost 50 developed countries across the globe.
Morons are going to fail in any system. That's what we have here with little Jackie.
Ummm if all your school are “state school” they are very likely to be awful, private school are unilaterally better.
well i'd hope so but that doesn't take away the fact that irish schools are pretty decent i'm from a bad part of the country and are metal work class was fully equipped milling machines and lathes etc the teacher cut a car engine on half for display we all got laptops with Autodesk etc on them
The birth of the education system in Ireland was built out of religious orders and parishes running schools, to the extent that most schools nowadays still have some affiliation with a religious order. Regardless their budgets along with the community/secular schools get they funding from the Government's department of education. Even the private schools I can think of have the same affiliations. The education is the same across the board. All students sit the same exams. It comes down to whether which part of the socio-economic divide/geographic location the school is in and the attitude and value education has.
disgusted, seriously
He’d make a great James Bond.

Hahaha
That makes me thinking. why were the Irish so much hated by the anglo-saxon world for almost a millenium?
The Irish were a great culture despite being at the edge of the ancient world, great litterature, oldest game continued to be played (older than the First Olympic games) the "Iomaint" (hurling) over 4000 years old!
Primarily, because the native Irish were doggedly Catholic and would not concede to an English and protestant ascendancy, neither by carrot nor stick. The English could never comprehend why the Irish would never give in or give up much to their enduring exacerbation. Ireland was always seen as at best an irritating thorn in England's side and at worse a constant threat of domestic rebellion and foreign invasion. England could readily rule and, for the most part, pacify an Empire but never the small country and nation next-door.
I don't think hate factored into it. It was just pure cynical imperialism.
That's a rather blunt way of putting very nuanced history. Britain and Ireland have a long and complicated relationship. It's simply obtuse to suggest that the British hate a place so many of them share, literally, a family connection with.
@@SeaJayBelfastYeah it's a lot more complicated than people make it. In my Irish side of the family I have Republican and Unionist relatives. It's a lot more complicated than religion too. There's no one defining characteristic that 100% ensures you'll be on any particular side or even choose sides. And it's dedifferentiation now from the Troubles. And the Troubles were different from partition.. and so on, and so on. You're absolutely right. I have protestant friends in Ulster on both sides and Catholics too. And my line of the family have been in Australia and NZ since my antecedents were transported for life. Irishness never goes away 😂 and not does the disagreement.
Ireland has a problem for every solution.
The troubles were a by product of partition and the gerrymandering of the state@@charlietwotimes

Just watched Hunger on Amazon Prime.
This is one of the worst films ever!
Obviously was made to tilt things in favor if the Brittish government.
Bobby Sands was made to look like a crazed lunatic and an idiot. No mention till the end notes that Bobby Sands was duly elected as MP and they had the timeline on the events so skewed the viewer couldn't make heads or tails out of when things were supposed to take place. Also insinuated that the Long Kesh officer was killed while visiting his mother, was killed as revenge on orders from Bobby or for Bobby being brutalized.
Total lies!
