Loved Eric Davis when I was a kid. I remember towards the tail end of his career when I found out my Tigers got him, I started celebrating like we won the series.
Here's a long shot, Josh Hamilton. Hear me out, I know he suffered from substance abuse, but a lot of that didn't start until after a devastating car accident in which led his to that situation. Just a thought, would love to hear arguments for or against.
I think Chase Utley will get in. Top 5 in WAR 8 years 2 mvp runner ups, 6 time all star 4 silver sluggers. Not to mention he always got hit by pitches, even more so in philly. He was a smart base runner, he had a 29 -0 sb season. He could hit for power or average. His arm wasn’t anything special, in fact prob below average, but he was an spectacular athlete so it never hindered his team and would constantly make fantastic plays. His career was too short though even though it seemed like he only played during his prime. He also was a postseason beast. He tied the record for most home runs in the WS in 2009, many of the Great lefty CC Sebatia. He was the man and I think he should get in.
Huh? His highest MVP finish was 7th in 2006, with 2 other 8th place finishes, a 13th and 14th place. "Runner-up" means 2nd place. His peak from 2005 to 2009 was excellent. Between 7.3 bWAR and 9 bWAR each of those 5 seasons. Outside of those 5 seasons, his career was mediocre at best, IMO. His career slash line of 0.275/0.358/0.465 certainly doesn't scream "Hall Of Famer" along with his post season slash line of 0.224/0.364/0.410 (although admittedly he was a beast in several post season series, such as: 2008 NLCS, 2009 NLDS, 2009 WS, and the 2011 NLDS). He's the 11th best 2nd baseman all time per Jay Jaffes JAWS metric and 15th best all time in WAR. He is ahead of several 2nd baseman already in the HOF in those 2 categories, such as: Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio, Jackie Robinson. There's definitely a strong case to be made for his candidacy strictly looking at his peak and career WAR, JAWS, and comparing that to his 2B peers... but he's also lacking in a lot of areas. His career counting stats are not HOF-esque (less than 2,000 hits, 259 HR, 411 2B, 154 SB... not terrible just not great either) and all he ever led the league in was runs once and HBP 3 times. I think he will have some supporters for sure but I think he will sit there for a long while possibly while voters analyze him to death and maybe somewhere between his 5th and 10th year of eligibility, he gets in, just guessing there.
The one that hurts me the most as a Mets fan is David Wright. He retired with a 50.4 WAR. I estimated some hypothetical numbers had he remained healthy and played a total of 18 seasons instead of 14. I have him finishing with about a 68.4 WAR, 320HR, 1,323 RBI, 2,502 Hits, 205 stolen bases 9 X all star (has 7), 3x silver slugger and a 2x gold glove. .376OBP, .860 OPS and 1,296 Runs. NO MVP's The question is, with these numbers, would he have been a HOFer?
Growing up as a Phillies fan, Howard and Utley got me into baseball when the Phils won the World Series in 2008. Two huge pieces of the awesome ‘07-‘11 “dynasty.” Shame that injuries hurt their longevity. Two of my favorite players ever though, don’t know if they’re HOF worthy but I’d love to possibly see it
Fred Lynn had a good, but not great career. Look at the number of games he played per season. He missed a lot of time because of injuries. He was never the same player after 1979.
Man, most of this list is not in the HOF solely because they aren't eligible yet, not because they got injured. Some of this list (McCann, Pedroia, Utley) will have a legitimate case made and may in fact be elected.
Surprised no mention of Tim Lincecum. 3 World Series titles, 2 Cy Youngs, 3x strike outs leader. He was well on his way till his body and mechanics broke down.
Mattinglys stats are on par or better than Ryan sand berg and Kirby Puckett, who are both in the HOF... Donnie baseball is a hall of famer regardless what the ego maniacal reporters who vote think
@@dkroll92 He was hurt right as he was hitting his peak. Had he focused on Baseball, instead of dabbling with football, who knows. He did strike out too much, especially for that era.
I would make an argument that a few of these players could get in, in their their 7-10 voting years. Its a shame Johan who had two cy young awards a no hitter, lead the league 3 times in ERA did not gather enough votes to keep him around in the voting for a few years. Prince Fielders definitely has a slim chance cause he had a decade of great play.
Tony Conigliaro. Hit .363 as a 17 year old rookie for the redsox. In his second year he was the leader in homeruns in the al before being hit in the face causing permanent damage to his Retina.
I'm not sure if he put up a good enough batting average but I love watching him on the A's back in the 2000s. Eric Chavez hit a lot of home runs although he never made an All Star game last I checked and that was partly because he typically had slow starts to his seasons. The main thing he was amazing at was Fielding as he was able to win 5 gold gloves in a row. He would suffer injuries later in his career and barely play at all.
9:43 I only knew because I'm an Indians fan, but damn I miss watching Grady play. I have his '08 car bobblehead. One of my favorite bobbleheads of all time.
Thank you for making Eric Davis OF #1. I don't think modern fans understand how awe inspiring and incredible Eric Davis really was. There is NO DOUBT in my mind he would've been the 1st 40-40 guy in 86 (132 Games, 27 HR 80 SB) and the ONLY 50-50 man ever in 87 (129 games, 37/50). Sadly his career wasnt meant to be. I still remember being so horrified when he speared his own kidney in the 90 world series making a catch. And how crushed i was when he wound up having cancer (which he came back from and hit like 330 the next season). As a Reds fan my whole life, Eric was and will always be one of my 2 favorite baseball players in history. He really had the talent to have been a top 25 player in MLB history. It's just a shame how things play out for some athletes.
Ron Guidry? Louisiana Lightning? 25-3, 248 k's, 1.74 era. and that was just 1978. Tim Lincecum? Eric Davis is the fastest player in MLB history to achieve 30/30 club he did it in 90 games, the second closest player is A Rod in 107 games. Eric Davis was on pace to hit 50/50 club in 1987 but was injured severely running into wall at Wrigley sidelining him for last 8 weeks of season.
If Josh Hamilton never got into that car crash he could have been one of the greatest players of all time. Imagine 2010 and 2012 Hamilton but playing in 2000-2015. He would have been scary.

On 06/27/02, the Indians traded Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew to the Montreal Expos for Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore and Lee Stevens. Clear 21st century bias in this list. If you dig, you'll find 2 or 3 dozen great candidates from 1900 to 1990. In the 80s and 90s, medicine learned to fix a lot of previously career ending injuries. Tommy John surgery and ACL repairs save a LOT of careers now.
Darryl Strawberry, Albert Belle, Dwight Gooden, Cesar Cedeño (though his time of was not because of injuries but he was that good) and José Reyes may have had a casé for HOF of not for injuries.

Nomar is the starter. Mattingly is obvious and he should be in at any rate. Dave Parker was the best player in baseball for a decade. He had two or three down years at the end of his run with Pittsburgh but came back to be the best player in baseball again with the reds. All he needed was to let his knee and wrist heal. His knee was actually tore up in high school and he still had plus plus major league speed. He should've won three MVP awards minimally, probably more. And he still has the numbers to be in easily. Glad to see you mention Tony oliva. But your best inclusion was Big E, Eric davis. I grew up watching him as a reds fan. He had as much pure talent as anyone who ever stepped on the diamond. Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden. Unfortunately, that was more substance abuse not injury!
