PSA for female travelers to India: Indian people in general are really amazing and will gladly integrate you and let you partake in their festivals. Their hospitality is unmatched and they're usually VERY respectful. However, for both Holi and Ganpati Visarjan, I would urge female travelers not to celebrate with random people, because with so many people there are always bound to be a few bad apples and stuff can get very chaotic the bigger the crowd or if you're not aware what kind of area you're in. If you have Indian friends who can invite you to their society (apartment complex) to celebrate then it's fine. Guys don't have to worry usually. It's unfair, but that's just what it is and you shouldn't set yourself up for a bad experience. Saying this as a white female foreigner who has been living in India for 10 years and loving it!
