Marina, Illia is a genius and he is also a superhero (he doesn’t wear his cape while he’s working so it doesn’t get dirty)! Thank you for explaining how you put loose insulation behind the top row of bricks - I really wondered how to do that. I’m very happy the Catspector was on duty to make sure that everything was properly done!

Love the “look” of the Hemp blocks. This is the most interesting and enjoyable channel I watch from Arlington, Texas. Now you’ve gone from a demolition expert, to plumbing,to roofer, to rock/brick mason to….I’ve lost track and now to Hemp Mason. And Gardener. I’m very very impressed. Thank you👍👍👍

Watching you fulfill your commitment to restoring your old Belgium home, whilst your Ukrainian homeland is being torn apart with weapons of war, breaks my heart. Your efforts to build are the opposite of such destruction. It warms the cockles of my heart to see your painstaking effort build your future, and it gives us all hope.

Congrats on getting a wall completed. And nice to have your wife helping you so much. Makes it so you don't have to climb up and down so much. That is certainly going to be a very warm house when it's all done.

  • @dr.rotwang

Watching you fill behind that top row gave me an idea. If you place the top row bricks on their side, slide them all the way to the wall, and then trim them like a capstone then you won't need to fill behind them, just mortar them in place. Should have the same insulation effect and be way faster.

12 years ago, I renovated an old farm building (a silkworm farm) with a similar technique. The "Chanvribloc" blocks were more friable and I used common plaster as a binding mortar.
But unlike you I did not fill the space between the wall and the blocks with hemp. Indeed, this air gap can be integrated in the insulation calculation if its thickness is less than 2 to 3 cm.
I used this space to pass data cables, electrical cables and plumbing. This made it easier for me to make the modifications to the room that I did in 2020.
Finally, I suggest that you do not tamp the hemp into the space between the wall and the blocks. You will use less hemp and insulation will be better because there will be more air.

When you work at the window, you always start with a short piece. Then you put a long piece. I recommend starting one layer with a short piece and the next one with a long piece. Like a normal wall. It will be more durable this way
