    Great video, those Sago Palm plants are looking awesome once you have trimmed them. Hello from South Africa.

    So very helpful, trimmed mine as instructed they look much healthier! Sadly didn't find any double trunks but I will always have excitement from now on with the unexpected surprise of maybe finding that one of my sagos has decided to become a double headed one like yours! Thanks for passing on the tips

    That was very interesting but even more interesting is i watched your newest video first and you still have the same pruners after 3 years 😂😂. I lose those damn things every year. Thanks for sharing 👍

      That’s pretty funny Mark! I am impressed that you noticed and remembered…. I have lost my share of pruners over the years but I am on a lucky streak 🙂.

    This is my first year to purchase Sago’s. I have 3 large and 2 small. We are experiencing a heat wave 105-110 degrees and hot winds. They are suffering. Thanks for the video. Now I don’t feel so bad to cut off so many fronds when its cooler. I am curious why you cut off all of the fronds and only leave the new ones? I prefer the fuller look. Happy growing!

      Thanks for watching Denise. You probably purchased your sagos from a nursery, usually they are raised and sold under conditions that most of us can't replicate. If the Sago was raised in direct sun then the fronds will have no problems but if they are coming from filtered sun and ooler temps then your plant will in a lot of cases burn from the heat and sun... don't worry, in a couple years it will be acclimated and look beautiful in most temps. Note, that if you are having new fronds that are still opening and you get caught in a heat wave... you might want to find a way of protecting it from the direct sun or they will burn on the ends and remain that way until new fronds come out again.

    My sago palms don't have the tall trunks like yours, are these a specific species?

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  2 года назад

      Sagos are extremely slow growing. Some of these you see are over 50 years old. The height of the trunk only happens after a new layer of fronds have grown and been trimmed. I would expect a good 10 years before the trunk starts to develope.

    Thanks for the videos! Just moved to Louisiana from Baltimore and now have FIVE sagos-and absolutely no idea what to do with them. Your videos have answered so many of my questions. I have one that is ‘double heading’ and thought it was a bad thing, but now I’ll let them both grow and see what happens. One question: one of my trees has several cones growing from the top. Everything I’ve read/viewed says it should only be one. What’s normal, and what can/should be done with those?

      Hi Lady and thanks for watching. Some people may leave them on a little longer but I prefer to remove them before they turn brown and to allow the energy to go to the new growth. Thanks for your comment and for watching. I hope you subscribed to see future sago videos👍. Burke

    Beautiful yard. 😄 I have like 8 good size pups on the bottom of one of my sagos. Should I remove them? Will it damage the sago itself? How do i remove them? Lol We purchased this house 2yrs ago. And they never took care of these plants. It's a queen and has seeds.

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  2 года назад +2

      Hi Desirae and thanks for watching. Removing pups is a matter of preference, in general I like to see 1-3 at the base but more than that I feel detracts from the sago. You can always remove pups without damaging the plant unless it is a really large pup. In the case of a really large pup, just make sure that once removed the open scar dries for a few days before covering back with dirt…good luck with the removal👍

    How big and tall does the Sago Palm get? Please let me know. I don't want anything too huge for our front yard. Thanks.

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  2 года назад

      Thanks for the question. I have seen some that are 12-15 feet tall but you better have 100 years to care for it. I have some sagos that are 40+ years old and the trunk is still not 4 ft tall. They are one of the slowest growing plants. The usual problem is people buy them small thinking they will have a large plant in a couple years and that just does not happen with a sago. The smaller sagos take a good 5 years before they even get a trunk shape, after they become a trunk and not just a round ball you can expect 1-2 growth per year. Good luck! Burke

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  3 года назад +1

      I never let the fronds dry out before cutting... two reasons, Once the new growth starts out of the middle I want all the plants nutrients to go to the new growth and not the old browning fronds. The second reason is that they cut much easier when still green.

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  4 года назад +3

      Hi Cindy, I understand your feeling on the Sago, there really is nothing safe that you can do to get your single head back. If you cut off the second head you can risk disease and the life of the cycad. I encourage you to be excited about the rare occurrence and enjoy the new shape it will take on, after all you now have something most people don’t. If you can’t stand it then have it dug out and trade it for a single head again... most people/nursery’s would be thrilled with the trade. Thanks for watching and for your question.

    You should never trim green producing leaves. It weakens the tree. Look how you tree trunks are thinning in the top - you abuse them with that kind of trimming.

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  3 года назад +1

      Dlya, you must not understand. The trunks at the top will continue to grow and expand. Evidence of this can be seen by looking at the trunks all the way down. These cycads have been cared for like this for decades. I thank you for watching the video and for your comment but in this case you might want to do more research and consider a new approach. Again thanks for your interest.
