One difficulty in studying English is there are too many people from non-English background in English speaking countries. They justify their usage of English in their own ways. Sth like... Someone told me "Nice to see you" was incorrect because we meet a person no see the person. I was so confused about the correct usage between the four different phrases. Now, they look so clear. Good job, Neil.
Thanks. I having a question for a long time. No one can have given me the answer yet. It bothers me a lot. 1. I saw him cross the street 2. he was seen to cross the street. 3. I saw him crossing the street. 4. he was seen crossing the street. they are all correct, and I can understand 3,4。 but for 【1】 or【2】. I know it’s incorrect if 【1】 become 【I saw he ”to“ cross the street】, but why? If we do this. What does this sentence mean? I also know【2】 must have 【to】,but why this【to】is necessary? If it is taken away. How do native speakers feel? I want to know the underlying reason that why the infinitive with Passive Voice of Perceptive Verbs must have 【to】。
nice to see you ☺ yes it's the right way to say it for me 'cause I've seen you a lot of times 😊 YOU 'd have to say: nice to meet you ...to me great that you are back 🌼 and THANK YOU for the whole kind of advise and explaining ich danke dir sehr 🍃🌹

2. he was seen to cross the street.
3. I saw him crossing the street.
4. he was seen crossing the street.

In [1] the verb cross just indicated the object "him " it can't indicate the Subject "he "so the subject "I" indicated by saw .
Thank you Neil!
