How To Start A Carbureted Vehicle

  • Vehicles produced since the mid 1980s are fuel injected. With a fuel injected car, to start it you just turn the key. My 1967 Mustang has an old school carburetor. Because it has no computer, there's a little more to starting it than just turning the key. If the engine is cold, meaning it has not run in the last few hours, you turn the key to the on position, slowly press the gas pedal to the floor and slowly release it...do this a couple of times...then with your foot off the gas turn the key to crank. If the engine doesn't start, try pumping the gas pedal a couple more times and try to crank it. If you pump the pedal too many times, then the carburetor will get flooded and the engine won't start. If the carburetor gets flooded, turn the key on, press the accelerator to the floor and hold it while you crank it. When a flooded engine starts, it will run rough, so slowly let up on the gas pedal as the engine begins to run smoother. If the engine is warm, meaning it has been run in the last few hours, turn the key on and hold the gas pedal 1/4 to 1/2 down while you crank it and release the gas when the engine starts. Also, you never want to rev a cold engine. Royalty-free music courtesy of Kevin MacLeod, Incompetech.com. Track: Gearhead.

      I always had to press the pedal like a maniac, only, in addition to this, I was also required to sacrifice some form of livestock, pray, then dance ritualistically around the car three times, in THAT very specific order before getting in and attempting to start it up while pumping the gas. You do these steps out of order, and you’ll have to start right back up from the beginning, and hope you didn’t accidentally flood it by pissing it off.
      Note: the company that made my car is no longer in business. I’m pretty sure I know why.

    I’m 41 but my first car was carb and since then I’ve owned fuel injected. That was until a month ago when a bought a 1969 Chevy Impala Custom Coupe with a 350 and quadrajet 4 barrel. It felt great starting an old car again with mechanical fuel pump. One of the previous owners had a can of engine start crap in the glovebox but can’t say I’ll be needing it. Process is just like you say. Car starts no problem and lovely smell of petrol. 😄

    I guess the basic difference is with a carburetated engine, the whole purpose of the foot action on the pedal all relates back to the carburetor bowl being empty (cold)vs. suffiently full(warm).
    A fuel injection engine relies on a fuel pump and ECU both working.

    • @nashvilleoutlaw
      @nashvilleoutlaw Год назад

      Kinda. The bowl is full but a carb engine has to dump raw fuel in the intake to evaporate. Where fuel injection sprays fuel as a mist. Carbs run off about 5psi. Early fuel injection about 30psi. Modern direct injection about 2000psi.

    Damn! I drive a VW Golf Mk2 with carb since 2 years, and didn't knew, that the warm engine starts easier with the pedal pressed fully, then released when it starts. Usually i always press the pedal fast way in, then release (below 10 celsius twice), and strarting with cold engine. But sometimes the warm engine starts harder. Surely that's because fuel vapours may appears in the fuel line.

      FaZe CrAzY626 I just built an s10 with a 383 and an edelbrock carb, on cold startup no matter what I have to do the exact same thing. For the first 20 seconds I have to keep revving it, then it will idle on its own. Its not bad at all the rev a cold started engine, but try not to pass 2000 rpm....because since it just started, not everything inside the motor is oiled up yet. Hope this helps.

      Make sure your using high octane gasoline (93) because if your using regular (87) then that might be your problem since I’ve had this problem when I first got my 67 mustang. Also adding a small bottle of high octane liquid into your gas tank won’t hurt at all as well. If that doesn’t help then you might have a problem with your fuel filter or fuel pump. Hope this helps you out.

    I have a toyota hiace 1996 petrol and lpg van and if I don't let the car warm up until the temperature needle is in the middle, it wont let me drive. It seriously means I have to sit there for 10 minutes sometimes. It never used to do this to this extreme but after the last mechanic adjusted all the shims in the engine I've had issues. It obviously uses a lot of petrol having to idle it for so long. Does anyone know what the issue could be? I've sunk so much money into this van and frankly I'm tired of it but I'm currently on the road and out of my home state so I can't even sell it. Is this just something I'm stuck with now? Having to warm it up for this long? Once it's warm it drives really well. Oh and I am starting the van on Petrol. I hardly drive it on LPG because not many gas stations sell it.
