Marcela joined us for a while with the lack of hair, but her locks are back, and she is clear of cancer.
I’ve seen Anneke absolutely Command a room alone with an acoustic guitar. She had several hundred metal heads singing along with her To Jolene.
I saw The Gathering when Anneke was 7 months pregnant. She killed Black Light District, played the guitar on the side,because of the babybelly. She was still jumping around like she was not pregnant.
Anneke the god mother of the dutch metal queens, the role model for Floor Jansen and manny other dutch metal singers. The more oparatic parts in this song where done by Marcella Bovio an other great singer.
Actually Anneke is classically trained as well and does do some but not as much of the classical parts

Another great analysis. I think the operatic parts were done by Marcela Bovia who is singing back up. My favorite Anneke song is Travel from the Gathering 25th anniverary show. Just stunning. Also her duet with Sharon del Adel, Somewhere, from the Black Symphony concert. Both Anneke and Marcela with Floor in Valley of the Queens. For a song with Marcela featured more prominently checkout MaYan Rebirth of Despair.

Marcella was discovered by Arjen and came to the Netherlands to work with him and basically never left. Now she is the no 1 to call if you need a backing singer in metal or prog. Yes, everybody in Europe seems to know one another. (BTW The Netherlands is not scandinavian). Diana Ankudinova is an amazing singer,her voice fascinates!
I love Anneke! She has perfect pitch, legato, dynamics, changing of registers... And also - sometimes when she belts, she does it in almost what I call Eastern European style. It's sometimes called "white voice", like in traditional Slavic singing. She doesn't always use it, but sometimes you can hear it very clearly. Her ability to combine many, many styles while not losing her timbre, her distinct color... It's absolutely incredible!
To me the unsung hero of this track is Marcela. She is a vocal chameleon and the mistress of harmonies. She is doing most of the more "operatic" notes here which is kind of the opposite of when she is singing in MaYaN with Laura. Also in the band you know Ed, Joost, Johan, & Ferry from Ayreon, the female guitarist is Merel Bechtold who is also in MaYaN with Marcela. The thing I like most about Anneke is how much she enjoys herself on stage. You almost never see her singing without a big smile on her face.
if you watch the Ayreon Universe Live show you will see the same band almost in entirety. Annika has a distinctive voice and has been singing in heavy bands since her teenage years. Arjen has known her, like Floor for 25+yrs so they have a strong connection and they trust each other fully! The backing singer Marcela has become a bit of a muse for Arjen and you will see her used everywhere in his projects either as backing or lead vocalist. Part of Marcela's genius is the ability to back any singers tone or style and with Arjen always dragging in performers from all over the place it makes backing them much easier! A good demo of this is the song Valley of the Queens from Ayreons Universe where she acts as the third singer with both Annika and Floor who approach it very differently.
Hi Eric, those musicians from different countries know each other. Usually they play with each other in the bands.It is really very common. You must know that there is no envy. Their goal is MAKING FEEL GOOD MUSIC and nothing but that. As you said; they are having fun and there is no room for ego.
My theory is, it's because metal is a very festival driven genre.
Bands keeps running in to each other all summer long.
This is another Arjen project, so the musicians are almost the same. Everything Arjen touches is brilliant, as he only works with those he knows will present his music the way he wants it preformed.
Anneke van Giersbergen, Godmother of dutch metal Queens. 💕💕🦄🦄🌹🌹 She is born in the same part of the Netherlands as Floor. You should be able to contact Arjen directly about the block.
Anneke is 49 and still touring and still sounds as great as she did in her 20's. She is a gift to us all with her music. Unlike most vocalists here in the US you will find true artists in Europe. Theydon't need autotune or studio magic to sound great. They work to get great and not rely on help from machines.
Whenever you have posting issues with anything of Arjen's try to get with him (via Facebook) and he will work to clear it up. He loves reactions, especially the good ones, of which you are.
Eric should also ask to intervive Arjen, Arjen seems to enjoy being interviewd by good youtuber's and i bet Eric and him would have a great chat and an awesome interview!

The keyboard man isn't pronounced "yuust", it is with a simple double "o" like "floor" and "door", so it is "yoost".
And "Anneke van Giersbergen" is as good as an American or English speaking will pronounce it. Very nice and almost perfect. It's a very difficult "G", a guttural sound.
Also, Anneke's collabs with Devin Townsend, like Ih-Ah and Grace, are definitely worth a look.

I would compare the pronunciation of 'Joost" more to 'toast" as it much more near to the name. "Floor' and "door" get the vowel pretty close too but it is just a bit harder for a non-Dutch speaker to incorporate that into another word. I would say "yoast" is easier.
(or the ribbing term LUL [ lull ] as Arjen seems to prefer to use 😜)
"AH-nik-ah" is how I hear it; check out her unplugged versions of songs from The Gentle Storm with just her singing and Arjen on guitar, they introduce themselves by name so you'll get that pronunciation plus awesome music. "Endless Sea" is a good track of the unplugged sessions to check out.

What really stuck me with head banging is their capabilities of playing without missing one friking note. I am in awe. Good video again.

It's basically everyone you will see performing with Ayreon when live (they will all be involved) plus Merel Bechtold (Delain, MaYaN and others) on guitar on the left.

Arjen.....Anneke....Floor.....Marcela....Simone....the fact that I only have to mention their first names and everybody knows whom I am talking about....This Dutch metal prog scene is world class and is " neighboring " to Nightwish in music style and quality. It is a rabithole with no end. For half a year I am discovering extremely good music with all their side projects that have mainstage quality on a daily base. It really is mindboggling. If you discover all the songs from Anneke from The gentle storm, Vuur, and songs like "Hurricane" or "take me home" , to mention a few, you're in for a treat.
This melody.......it is so good. Arjen knows how to write a melody. I just listened to this song four times and guess what? Let's do a fifth time....Can't get enough of it. Just like with "take me home" from Anneke. The melody is so inspiring you keep repeating it.

Anneke, "Metal Tinkerbell" She has a huge history in the rock scen since 1994-1995. Started with The Gathering then with whom she did the TG25 concert, the 25th anniversary of the band in which all singers from the history of the band were performing. Noteworthy as a whole this concert, but Travel is a must hear.
This is an Arjen scene, familiarity of his regulars... one degree of Arjen Lucassen several times over, as he's very much the Kevin Bacon of not just Dutch metal ))). All ARE Dutch, except backup vocals, but she may well be, given how tied up she's been in the Dutch scene. Anneke is awesome, chiseled into my personal Mt. Rushmore of rock/metal vocalists ))) And I definitely second all those who suggested you check out her Devin Townsend Project contributions, with her next-rock neighbor on the face of the said Mount ))) I'd note that Anneke does not really do operatic style vocals - most of it actually coming from Marcela in the back, as that's part of her Floor-quality arsenal.
awesome! the diary is one of my favorite albums (the storm version to be precise, it was a double album: a gentle and a storm version of the songs). Would love to see you do heart of amsterdam from that same album :-). Ferry Duyssens (gitar), Joost Van den Broeck (keyboards), jopan van stratum (base), Ed Warby and Marcela Bovio (backup singer, she is awesome in her own regard) are regular musicians for both Arjen en Anneke. You see them a lot in projects from both Arjen en Anneke (check out her current band Vuur). really loved this one! Thanks.

Anneke has an Acoustic album out. The Gathering you should react to Strange Machines from Pink Pop and Travel from the 25th Anniversary. Anneke sings a Chris Cornell song called Like a Stone acoustically. Anneke will be 49 on the 8th. The other lady is Marcela Bovio and she has a very good voice also. There's a video of Floor, Anneke and Marcella singing a song called Valley of the Queens. Anneke,Floor ,Simone and Sharon den Adel are all born inthe Netherlands.

You see a lot of the same musicians across Arjen’s many projects…he tends to use the same musicians, as well as vocalists. So Ayreon, Star One, The Gentle Storm, Stream of Passion, Ambeon, Guilt Machine…you’ll see some of the same musicians, maybe in different combinations, across all of his projects. Anneke is a beloved figure…she was the inspiration for Floor, Charlotte from Delain, and others. As another commenter said, she can captivate an entire venue with just an acoustic guitar. Also, if a video featuring one of Arjen’s projects gets blocked, just reach out to him…he often will take care of it.
Anneke is a Reese's peanut butter cup with a side of french fries and a filet mignon. Ridiculously talented lady. Frequent collaborator with Mr. Lucassen. I recognize several of the band members from Ayreon. Valley of the Queens is usually the entry point for Anneke after someone has seen Nightwish then Ayreon. Well done again sir!

You are right about all those kriss kross connections between the musicians and singers. Arjan Lucassen is a big talent on picking talents from a large pool. He recently elaborated on that in an interview online. I see personal connections between all those Dutch bands too like Epica, Within Temptation, Delain, After Forever, Ex Libris, Mayan and they've got a lot of songs in which they play or sing together.🤘All of the leadsingers in these bands have been working with Arjen!
Eric, the young blonde, stage right is the rhythm guitar player for Delain. If you watch Delain doing The Gathering from this smae concert you will see her playing a blue guitar!!!

Hi Eric, great you reacted to The Gentle Storm, just great! On the sound quality, I did not like the mix of this live show. There is a number of songs from The Diary which are taped indoors, and there the sun quality is just great. Then you get some more of the awesome backing vocals of Marcela - and duetting in 'the Brightest Light'... That series has a great duet Anneke with Dianne van Giersbergen (no relative) 'New Horizons' 🙂

If you reach out to Arjen, he will definitely unblock you video. He is a very great guy and appreciates reactors. There is a tight group of talented musicians that work with many different bands. Your headbanging comments are so funny. You look like you having a seizure? The different influences are the reason Arjen has different projects. Each one is designed to have a slightly different vibe, while keeping the progressive feel overall.
Loved it again. Anneke is one of my favorites along with Floor. I think you would also appreciate the project from Arjen called, "Stream of Passion". It features the redhead singer from this song. Her name is Marcela Bovio from Mexico. I love her as well. See my link for a taste of her amazing vocal ability combined with the compositions of Arjen. In the beginning of this project Arjen played live with this band. However, this link is showing a band that Arjen assembled for Marcela. Her beautiful and operatic gothic style breaks my heart in such a wonderful and powerful way.
