This is a fun hidden gem on the Famicom. It reminds me of Final Fantasy Adventure, which released a few months later on GB. But as Famidaily pointed out, Grand Master is short enough to complete in one sitting. I wish there were more mini RPGs like this.
I haven't played this, but a level-based action RPG that can be played through in a few hours sounds fun. Not sure about the "you have to play through the levels in a specific order to get the best ending" idea, but it's a lot more than I'd expect from the publishers who specialised in really bad formula 1 racing games. One thing I do know is that it uses a 3-megabit MMC1 cartridge, and the only other game I know of which uses the same board is Skate or Die 2.
I'll be keeping my eyes open for this one. It looks like one that I would enjoy. This channel has been a valuable resource to see what the cartridge looks like along with the game play.

You know, that logo does look a bit alike. Varie got started right after the original Final Fantasy was released, though, so it was right before Square got really big.
This is one I always thought was pretty interesting but I never played it in full. After hearing your recommendation and seeing the length I just might give it a try now using the Everdrive and some savestates.
It's a good game, but I found it to be kinda uneven in terms of difficulty. For example, some of the bosses are so easy you can beat them in seconds with the improved equipment. I thought it was 'fine' personally; beating Dante at the very end (I think it was Dante?) took me a few seconds and I thought that was kinda funny. :P Other than that, it's well-made for sure.
A very decent game but kind of repetitive. I'd say it's among the most interesting Famicom ARPGs but Grand Master is not as epic as Tecmo's masterpiece from the end of 1991

oh wow! didn't expect another zelda-like not from nintendo on the famicom... looks like it's been translated so definitely hoping to check it out!

Yeah, upgrading the equipment is the key to doing well and finding a path through the items (and story) to power up will help a lot.
