Gosh, can you stop being so needlessly pessimistic?
MP14 trains on M14 haven't been trashed, same for the trains on M1, M4 or M11, etc.
Today's Paris is nowhere near what it was in the 80's and 90's, when trains were constantly raided by hordes and covered in graffiti.
Now it's pretty rare. Most trains are in good condition and stay that way.
Graffiti still happens but it's pretty mild and much much much *less* frequent than 30 years ago.
You're just being too French, as if you lived in a terrible place where everything goes to crap instantly. But you're not, you're just overly dramatic.
In the late 80's and early 90's, entire stations were covered in graffiti, like Louvre Rivoli that was raided twice. You would have had a hard time finding a train that wasn't full of graffiti.
      It's rare nowadays.
And specifically with line M15, train yards are inside, the line is entirely underground and tunnels are completely separated from public areas by full-size PSD's. It will most likely be the line with the least graffiti of the network.
As for the interiors, they've used easily cleanable and replaceable parts, ontop of having a fast reaction policy.
You're just being dramatic as a husky...

Apart from cities like London and Bangkok (which are both highly centralized capitals, like Paris) we still have mega-cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul that are ENORMOUS! and Jakarta is on its way to become yet another highly competitive hub, just like New Delhi and many other emerging Indian mega cities. @@RMTransit It's the same for M14's extensions too.
It's done by RATP except 3 stations: Orly airport, Villejuif Institut Gustave Roussy and Saint-Denis Pleyel which are under SGP's management if I'm not mistaken. Which are interchange stations with "GPE proper" lines.
That's why M14 and M11 extensions both had separate websites for their projects' details, and station works sites visits during the "patrimony days" in mid-September were made with RATP personnel.
"la14plus14" for example is a site edited by RATP.

@@RMTransitBut do you know why it’s taken by the RATP instead of the Grand Paris Express Entreprise ? I mean the two are public compagnies so why is there a difference ?

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG 7 месяцев назад

@@zariyBG Because SGP, formerly Société du Grand Paris, now Société des Grands Projets, is the public company "vessel" through which a number of massive projects are and will be built.
The funding for the SGP and RATP projects is different.
The extensions being built under RATP supervision are ordered by IDFM, the region's transit authority.
RATP won't be the owner, IDFM or the region will.
What's built under RATP's leadership is funded differently than what's built under SGP, it comes somewhat directly from the region which is responsible for finding funds for it.
Anything that's built under SGP is ordered by the state and must be validated through national law, which opens a specific funding through long-term loans contracted by the region with backing from the state.
So the loans for the GPE have more favorable conditions on longer terms (like 40 or 50 years negotiated similarly to national sovereign debt).
They are considered a form of national interest project.
However, what's built under RATP is a much simpler order from the region which does not need to first pass through national law, and it doesn't get as long-term and as favorable condition loans contracted by the region and they are not backed by the state the same way.
The funding conditions, the "public utility" and eminent domain conditions and other aspects are different.
What's built under SGP has a kind of status of national interest, while what's built under RATP is entirely dependent on the region.
The "strength" of a SGP project is pretty much like for building a power plant, or a ministry.
Whereas, when it's only under IDFM and RATP, it's a regional level decision.
Line 19 that was recently proposed by IDFM, the region, and the Val d'Oise department, with strong support from many, will need to go through national law in the country's parliament to be included into the GPE project.
If it's not passed through law, it will remain a rather common regional project and may have issues interlining with M17 for the part between Gonnesse and CDG or will be more complicated to fund.
Even if in both cases it's mostly the region that pays in the end, the difference between being a state backed project and a simple regional project is quite substantial.
It's much less of a strain on the region's budget when it's state backed, thanks to the more favorable conditions, the stare guarantee, etc.
Furthermore, several lines (and stations) of the Grand Paris Express will not be operated by RATP, but by competitors.
Saint-Denis Pleyel, for example, which is GPE's main hub, will be operated by Keolis, which will also operate lines 16 and 17.
Even if M14 will still operated by RATP for the foreseeable future. And M15 will be operated by RATP Dev, the private subsidiary of RATP Group.
Though, a line or section that is being built under RATP is not in any way a guarantee that this new infrastructure will be operated by RATP.
The use of national law and this specific "vessel" that is SGP is a way to ensure that the project will be built despite the changes in government, whether nationally or regionally.
It's also a way to ensure, thanks to the very long-term loans & the state backing & favorable conditions, that the region's funds are not monopolized and blocked by the mega project.
Imagine a family where the son wants to buy a home.
If he does that "on his own", he will have less borrowing capacity and will have substantially higher mortgage drafts.
If the parents back their kid for a much larger and much longer term loan, he'll get much more favorable conditions, with much lower drafts. So he may be able to do more things with his budget in the meantime.
That's why the biggest and most expensive project is the one under SGP, and the smaller ones are IDFM with RATP.
      Hope this answered your question.

However both the Paris metro and the London Underground do not provide INTER-SUBURBAN links. Eg in London, there is no raillink from Croydon to Bromley, or Harrow to Barnet. The whole point of the Grand Paris Express is that it will provide INTER-SUBURBAN links. See Reece's excellent maps. London needs to copy the Paris example. You know you've made it when you get to try out the new Paris Metro trains! These trains look sick, the brightness is perfect, the doors are a great size for crowd flow, and it's nice that they have automatic counting sensors too! Interesting to see what an unfinished gangway looks like too! I guess on the topic of cool rolling stock, I love the MTR Disneyland Resort Line rolling stock. They were the first on the MTR to use automatic train operation during normal operation, followed by the South Island line. They produced them by refitting M-Trains with a Disney theme. Not only are the windows Mickey-shaped, but also the grab handles, and there are even little displays of bronze Disney statues.
Other cool subway rolling stock I love are the NYC Subway's R211s and the Glasgow Subway. Even if not all of the R211s have open gangways (which open gangways will help big time for crowd control), it's very much still a step in the right direction! Besides the LED screens and the cool headlights, two touches I especially enjoy are the flashing red lights when the doors close as well as the flip seats that allow space for wheelchairs. And just any rolling stock in the Glasgow Subway I like because the trains are cute thanks to how small the tunnels are, even better when it's flashy and cool like the third generation rolling stock. The little train that could!

These Paris Metro trains are beautiful! Gotta give kudos to the French! And of course the station entrances of the Paris Metro by Guimard are beautiful as well. Here's the story behind why they're that way: In the years leading up to the Exposition Universelle in 1900, Paris was busy building their Métro, but many Parisians were against building said Metro because they thought it would look industrial. In order to make the entrances look aesthetically pleasing, the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris, or Paris Metropolitan Railway Company, held a contest with 21 participants but chose none of them and instead commissioned Hector Guimard to design entryways that were as elegant as possible.
Guimard opted to craft his entrances out of cast-iron set in concrete and painted a shade of green evocative of oxidized brass. The use of cast iron allowed him to construct the curved forms characteristic of his style, and concrete enabled him to incorporate sculpted details throughout each design, whether rendered as a roofed édicule structure or an open entourage model. In the years following their installation, Guimard's entryways were met with mixed reviews, and many were removed. However of course, the ones that remained were later realized for the Parisian icons that they are!

But that is certainly for the better as it was a bit silly to replace the whole rolling stock of the network by huge pack as it was done before.

Our cities are often huge by comparison, really! That's actually more of a problem - we have so many areas with poor density that are hard to serve so we just use buses and call it a day. In the land area of our cities we could actually quite comfortably fit many millions more people as long as we're not trying to make it work with big roads & ample parking. Public transit is just that much more efficient.
I've spent a lot of time in Tokyo and it is large in area, but also has 40 million people. And for the most part, people get places on time. Aside from the morning rush hour and certain areas that get very busy with tourists you would never really feel like it's ~15 times the population of Vancouver

Many Canadian cities do sprawl a lot farther than that with not much to show for it. Toronto could definitely have more than four (three? now that Scarborough RT is shut down) rapid transit lines, especially considering that Vancouver has half the population and also has three and we probably also need more

Man these are super impressive. And as a Copenhagener I'm looking very attentively. These are probably the closest we have as of yet to an example of what the next generation of S-trains for the city (which need to have level 4 Grade of automation) can be. A 3 car set of these already matches the requirements for length and the 110km/h max service speed is really close to the 120km/h one demanded for Copenhagen. The carriages would only need to be widened from 2.8m to 3.2+m and they'd basically fit the bill perfectly.

Then it most likely be from the X'trapolis lineup, which comprise some of the RER trains. MI09 trains and other double deckers being the largest kind if I recall correctly.
And they can be fitted with GoA4 capability just like the Metropolis.
X'trapolis trains exist in single and double decker versions, and various types of configuration, including open gangway and all the same interior bells and whistles as the Metropolis.
They are just the heavy metro version of the Metropolis product line, and with something like a 140km/h capability by default.
      Everything's customizable anyway.

But the thing is, DSB with their next gen S trains wants units that will run at GoA level 4, so same level of autonomy as the city's light metro. The plan is to have an option to fit them with caps to use them with drivers in the interim. These new trains are being tendered right now and should be entered into service by 2030 onwards. 226 new units, 55-60m long per unit so upwards of 3 can be coupled together, and split apart based on demand, 160 seats+16 bike spots per unit, Grade of automation level 4, minimum width of 3.2m, and max service speed of 120km/h with an option of 140km/h.

Widening the train can have prices consequences, and its not their fault alstom did exactly what the specifications said.
They can be up to 9 car sets just like other alstom metropolis but for line 15 its only 6 car sets. Most metro in France have a GoA 4 (Grade of Automation 4) which means fully automated and doesn't require human operations. The new generation of Alstom metropolis around France is many. Let's see the toulouse one
      Toulouse Alstom metropolis specifications are
Between 2,4m and 3m of width (alstom choosed 2,70 regarding the city's density)
      Air Conditioning,
36 meters in lenght (2 cars) and can be extended to 48 meters (3 cars) (2 mesurating 18 meters and 1 mesurating 12 meters)
      Open gangway
      Fully automated (GoA 4)
286 in capacity can be up to 386 in capacity,
      29 seats each car
      In railway
Between 2,6m and 3m in lenght (alstom choosed 2,70m.)
      Wider doors.

There were trials if I remember correctly, but they chose to focus on the colored seats and wall lining : red are priority seats and areas, blue for everyone else.
Apparently, it's due to the fact priority seating is mostly important during busy periods when it's de facto harder to see the floor.
I've also seen some feedback from PRM persons not really raving about colored flooring, feeling a bit like in a cattle pen and preferring side markings, like the colored sidings to indicate a "diffused" zone instead of an area precisely defined by a line. Also a feeling of better blending in and belonging to society than with a strictly defined area.
But some flooring color differentiation could be seen in some 3D preview images from Société du Grand Paris or Île-de-France Mobilités before the design was finalized for various new or upcoming trains.
I guess it was considered useless. They had PRM consultants (I mean real PRM people riding transit and giving feedback on new designs) and they probably preferred other more important details than the flooring, like handle bars at specific locations, standing pads for accompanying passengers, etc.

What's the value-add of the new metro connection to CDG? (Compared to the existing RER)

    • @RMTransit
      @RMTransit  Год назад +2

RER is super busy, so they are adding Metro and an Express train, since France is getting rid of a lot of Short Haul flights I imagine CDG is only going to get busier.

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Год назад +2

One other benefit is for local residents that work in CDG, which is a huge job center.
It will offer, in conjunction with RER B and CDG Express, 3 different urban rail means, with different costs and speeds.
Plus, an automated metro line is always more reliable than a driver operated train in a country prone to strikes.
It's a lifeline, and a guarantee that at least one connection, one rail-based transportation means should be operational in case of major disruption.
It's also simply added capacity, as currently the majority of people taking off from or landing in CDG use a car, taxi or Uber to get to / from the airport.
The RER alone wouldn't be able to cope with the air passengers if they switched to it, due to the major congestion by non-airport riders on the rest of the line (which is already Europe's second busiest after RER A).
If Paris Region wants to implement a true modal shift from the car to public transportation, like reversing modal shares, they need several different lines with different services :
TGV's serve as long distance access to / from CDG.
CDG Express will be the premium and fastest access from downtown Paris (from Gare de l'Est).
      Akin to Heathrow Express.
Both RER B and M17 (possibly also M19 further in the future if there's interlining but that's unclear as of now), will offer access to a much wider portion of the population.
Akin to Elizabeth line and London Underground's Piccadilly line for Heathrow.
M17 or the recently proposed M19 have different routes than RER B, so they can catch more riders and improve airport access a lot for air travelers but also airport workers.
While M19 should, either directly in case of interlining or through a connection with M17, offer redundancy and a somewhat direct alternative route between La Défense business district and CDG.
CDG's rail traffic potential is large enough to require several different lines.

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Год назад +1

@@thesenamesaretaken Sure but the impact that conversion to full driverless automation had on line reliability and strike avoidance was utterly massive.
During major strikes, the only lines that work normally, and even often in overdrive, are the automated ones.
When there's a 3 day strike among maintenance agents, that may create a maintenance backlog, but day to day operations are barely affected or often not at all.
When half the supervisors are on strike, you can still operate an automated line at 100% service by just asking non-striking supervisors to take over.
None if this is possible with drivers, it always has an impact on manned lines.
And in dire situations, a manager could take over supervision.
      Really, it's night and day.
Plus, the "reactivity" of fully automated lines is second to none.
When there's a big concert in Paris la Défense Arena with 40 000 people and the concert takes longer than planned, no one worries about driver shift schedules etc.
When the Arena signals the transit authority that they'll release 40k people into the streets in about 10 or 15 minutes, line M1's supervisors can inject dozens of trains and switch to super peak / event frequency by the touch of a button or a click on a mouse.
And voilà! Beyoncé can sing 10 encores and finish the concert 45 minutes later than the planned end.
The line is operating at 90 second frequency until the mass of concert goers have been absorbed, and doesn't need to run top frequency before it is actually needed.
You'd need a severe maintenance backlog to really impact a fully automated line. You also no longer need to worry about where drivers take their shift and if it is the current location of your top shape trains.
An automated line can operate a full service with a skeleton crew.

If they are run by Île de France Mobilités (the region) rather than RATP (the city), are they actually part of the Paris Metro system, or is it a different regional network that complements the RER?

    • @Clery75019
      @Clery75019 Год назад +10

All public transports in Paris are managed by the region under the authority of Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM). The city of Paris manages nothing. RATP is totally unrelated to the city of Paris, it's a state-owned transport company that used to have a monopoly on bus, metros and trams but is now in competition with other companies. The contract for line 15 was awarded to RATP but the contract for lines 16 and 17 was awarded to the competitor Keolis.

And to complement the previous reply and answer your question:
New GPE lines will be part of Paris metro (that's why new lines are numbered 15 to 18).
Anyway, RER lines are not technically Paris metro, but they are all part of the Paris transit system.
And the RER was for a short time named metro express regional.
All the GPE lines will de facto be integrated into the same fare system, even though some specific destinations, like airports, may require a surcharge on tickets.

I love these new trains! But its a shame that the central handrails are white and not a more bold colour. The white handrails could easily blend in with the white interior and may cause problems for partially sighted passengers. (feels a built form over function)

At least Paris generally gets it right when it comes to transit and these projects are no exception. Make it accessible, oui, but also make it fashionable. Those futuristic seat patterns ALONE make me want to visit and ride the rails.. This is how you entice the public onto transit and out of their cars... Nobody wants a downgrade to their commute from sitting in a private controllable ride to standing in an uncomfortable and often smelly tin/plastic can unless the tradeoff is worth it... This one? WORTH IT. And that smoke and laser show should be built into every station if you ask me. ;-)

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Год назад +1

You should see some of the new stations on the South section of M15 (first section of "GPE proper" new line to open in 2025)...
      They're worth any light show!
Especially Villejuif Institut Gustave Roussy, with its huge cylinder crisscrossed by escalators, and both M14 and M15 lines crossing at a 90 degree angle inside the cylinder. M14 being an enclosed bridge in the giant cylinder.
Or Saint-Maur Créteil, with its majestic and very deep, 50 meter tall spiral staircase in a light well, surrounded be a separated rotonda of 15 giant high-speed elevators.
Noisy-Champs, which has huge underground installations spreading over more than a kilometer in length, has a swirling upward roof made of metal, wood and glass, located in its center where M15, M16 will end under the rebuilt RER A station.
Almost all stations have dedicated original architecture and some of several are beyond grandiose.
Last time I checked (some of the stations on M15 East and West don't have much renderings yet), only 3 out of the 68 new stations share roughly the same model. All 3 being elevated stations.
The remaining 65 will apparently each get an architect and artist combo with unique architecture and unique art pieces.
Saint-Denis Pleyel is fantastic too, with an atrium like a fault-line and escalators zigzaging between the two sides of that large void. With something like 56 or 58 escalators, laid in parallel banks of 4 or more.
There's also one station that looks like a stylised P or a modified music note, by integrating a bridge over a waterway into the building.
      Several stations are simply stunning.
Only the platforms will be somewhat similar.
The new stations on RER E's Western extension are also gorgeous : La Défense CNIT with its wooden and reflective metal cladding ; and especially Porte Maillot with its elongated trapezoidal cross section and transparent skylight ground-level roof, with metallic caged escalators.
      It's beautiful.
These 2 are set to open in spring 2024 and there are plenty of renderings but also recent photos of the works that let you see their huge size and great design.

Technically, Paris has 6 driverless metro lines at this stage (lines 1, 4, 14, Orlyval and both lines of CDGVAL). With the 4 Grand Paris Express line, the total should reach 10 by 2026.

As a lifelong munich resident, I can't help but see an interesting resemblance to our metro stock, despite different manufacturers. The new train looks like a futuristic mix of both the 70s/80s A/B class trains and the 2000s/10s C class Siemens trains. The livery is really close, too!

Are they the same Train Types that are used for the REM in Montreal?

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Год назад

They're from the same family, the Alstom Metropolis.
But they are, as with almost all projects, customized to the client's needs and liking.
Sometimes heavily customized, like the recent MP14 trains, which apparently are from the Metropolis product lineup but with major differences from the GPE or REM variants.
