I write from Clallam Co. I recently dodged a bullet. The 41 year old single-chamber gravity septic system to my 75 year old house was inspected pursuant to the updated county guidelines. Not only the tank but also the drain field must now be certified. I must give a shout out to Olympic Sewer and Drain Cleaning for locating and repairing the drain field. Mr Paulson used brute labor (his back and a shovel) to expose a broken T and a sensor to locate the two perforated PVC drainage pipes and determine that there were, in fact, blockages. Your presentation piqued my interest because I have been manually clearing the overgrowth of blackberries, sword fern and some nasty aggressive tree-type plant since then. The drain field piping extends down a 45 degree slope from the septic tank before the T bifurcates to the two pipes. So it is apparent that the drain field is not convenient to maintain. I thank you for presenting this topic because I will need to reconsider having the drain field surface scraped and leveled, and replanting the sword fern. I have some experience with vinca major and minor and I know of its ability to crowd out unwanted vegetation.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're glad this presentation was of value to you. Please be careful about using heavy equipment on top of your drainfield. Heavy equipment compacts the soil and could cause the system to fail. You also need to be careful about adding a lot of soil to level it; please consult an expert before adding more than a few inches.
