I've ordered your book. I went through ivf multiple times. It was very isolating, and i still have strong feelings about that time. To the point i trained to become a counsellor. My daughter sleeps next door and knows all that is age appropriate. I hope if she ever needs ivf she won't feel like it needs to be hidden, like i did, like many do. I look forward to receiving your book, though i recognise your vulnerability, generosity and bravery in putting it out there. Thank you.

Oh wow can’t believe I’ve just watched a movie length reading vlog. You’ve got all the tension, suspense in it. I was glued throughout! And there’s the delightful tidbits of Lola as cameo. I’m rather intrigued by Paul Lynch’s Prophet Song now.

Ah this was great! Watched the video on the tv because if you make a video the length of an actual film, you deserve the big screen hahaha. After seeing the longlist, I ordered All the Little Bird-Hearts, How to Build a Boat, Pearl, Western Lane and In Ascension, but definitely most excited for the first one (which is thus far also the only one to arrive on my doorstep, so will probably start it this evening!!!). Also *very* intrigued by Prophet Song, especially now that you've picked it as your winner!! I'll pre-order your poetry collection pronto, usually not a poetry reader at all, but the sample poem hooked me! Hope you've had a good weekend and your streak of good reading continues! :)

I'm interested in reading In Ascension because Eric Anderson said that as soon as he finished it he turned to page one and read it all over again. I'm also interested, based on your review here, in Prophet Song and Old God's Time. Which is (or may be) a bit interesting because I don't read many books by male authors.

I genuinely wonder how many people have been excitedly waiting for this video. I watched it twice and indulged in special occasion ice cream (fireweed and honey) toward the end of the second time around. My favorite author thus far is MacInnes. I definitely want to read everything that he has written. I am most confused by Pearl. I would also rather be reading Daisy Johnson, but I do enjoy it’s take on memory. Regardless, it doesn’t feel like a “Booker Book” to me, and I’m really curious what the judge’s decision process/argument was with that one. Subtlety seems to be a theme this year, so maybe I just didn’t get it. After watching your vlog, I am most excited about picking up All The Little Bird Hearts. Thanks, Jen!🎉

I am listening to the first Part of The bee Sting and the daughter says about her mother that she never stops taking, she goes on and on and on from one thing to the next, sharing every little thought that crosses her mind. So I thought maybe that is reflected in the style without punctuation?

Im also drawn Old Gods Time. Hope you feel better. And may there always be great stories to read.

So great to hear you review all these! So far I've only read Western Lane - I see what you mean about the writing style but personally found that it kept the novel pacey alongside being subtle, which I think can be hard to achieve. And I know exactly what you mean about those emotional moments that suddenly get you towards the end. I cried!
Before your video Pearl and In Ascension were the other books that appealed to me. I think I'll probably still try Pearl as I already have a copy, and am looking forward to getting to In Ascension. I might add Prophet Song and The House of Doors to the list!

    - In Ascension
I can’t wait to read these and now your #2 I may also read! I’ve been having lots of trouble finding them in my library in the US as some of them haven’t been published here yet so I may need to do audio. Thanks for walking us all thru these with your thorough and thoughtful commentaries!! 😊

I love your new wig. I'm not very observant but I don't think I would have realised it was a different one :) although I do believe it might be lighter/ slightly more peach? It's nice. Hope it's turned out to be comfortable though. Thanks for the efforts in bringing us this video, it was fantastic as always x

Thank you for all the work you put into this video. I ordered quite a few books from the list based on your recommendations. I am particularly interested in In Ascension and Prophet Song. Again, thanks!!!

Thank you so much for reading the longlist so soon. The cover for Pearl looks so adorable. Someone compared it to Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (which I thought was okay) so I will sit tight about getting around to it. How to Build a Boat is on my radar. I think I will get Birnham Wood first (even though it's not on the list) as I saw a gorge edition in my local Waterstones in Stockport and feel like that will gear me up to read some new releases.
I recently read The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham and wasn't sure how much of the book was based off of real people after the narrator posits himself as knowing the characters in real life and writing about them. The House of Doors sounds like a good read now that i have read a little of Maugham's own stuff.

I think the book definitely would be more interesting with added context (I enjoyed researching and learning more of his life alongside, which is not necessary of course but I couldn't help myself, ha) x

loved this, Jen! Like you I've already read A SPELL OF GOOD THINGS and I had reservations at my library for THE BEE STING and ALL THE LITTLE BIRD-HEARTS. While watching the video (😅) I've added OLD GOD'S TIME and PROPHET SONG - I was unsure about this one when I first saw it on the longlist but your review sold it to me!

I might give Prophet Song a try. I have not been that excited by the Booker picks, but your review does make me curious about that one.

Wow I am so impressed that you read the whole longlist in two weeks! I’m very excited for quite a few of these titles, but so far In Ascension is the only one I’ve ordered from across the pond. Now I think I need to preorder Prophet Song and try to get a copy of All the Little Bird-Hearts too!

I’ve read Western Lane and I didn’t enjoy it. It felt very uncomfortable and claustrophobic at times. At first I enjoyed it being from a child’s point of view but overall I found it hard to read and I was happy to finish it. I have given my copy away. That’s my personal opinion of how I felt about it.

I haven't read any booker prize books, I thought it would be hard to understand but Jen makes me think differently.
Most of these sounds engaging to read, and I love your poem you shared checking out more of it!

I LOVE your literary prize reading vlogs, and this one was so fun!! I have If I Survive You out from the library right now, and from looking at the longlist initially, I was the most pulled towards The House of Doors. After hearing your thoughts, I think I'm going to give a few more of these a chance as well. This video also made me hungry for focaccia lol

Great video :D I've read 3 of the books, House of Doors (loved it), Old God's Time (really liked this) and Pearl (I thought it was alright, it also made me think of Elmet and Everything Under, like you've said :) ). I will be reading All the little bird hearts and Prophet Song and I think that will be all. I am quite intimidated by In Ascension because of the size and some mixed reviews.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  10 месяцев назад +3

Despite the size of Ascension, the text is nicely spread out so it doesn't feel too daunting. However, it's definitely going to be a love-it-or-leave-it type of book, so best to read the beginning/a sample somewhere to see if it's your cup of tea. I hope you love All The Little Bird-Hearts and Prophet Song (seeing as we have similar thoughts on the ones we've both read!) x

All of these sound so interesting. I'm interested in reading 'In Ascension', 'How to Build a boat', 'All the little bird-hearts, 'Prophet Song', 'The House of Doors', and 'Old God's Time'. I don't think I've looked at a list with so many books I want to read, so I think this years Booker is quite interesting. Love you little dog by the way. A sweetheart in his blankets.

I read House of Doors for a book discussion group before it was longlisted. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would def recommend it. Having an interest in neuro- diversity I thoroughly enjoyed All the Little Bird-hearts and How to Build a Boat. A Spell of Good Things was just an okay read for me, wouldn't consider it Booker worthy. I thoroughly enjoyed In Ascension but was really disappointed with the weak ending. Loved your video.

I loved watching this so thanks for the time it must have taken to put together 😊 I'm plodding my way through the longlist but I've had to focus on some non booker books because they're due back at the library. I'm having fun reading them though. It was interesting to hear you talk about which ones you listened to vs read physically. I always worry that I'm more generous with books I listened to because I only listen to books if I love the narrator. I'm listening to Old God's Time and it's such a vibe! After what you said I'm not sure whether to listen to The Bee Sting or not. Did you prefer listening or reading?
Are you looking forward to just reading what you fancy now? 😅
    Loved the poem! ❤

Definitely preferred listening to The Bee Sting. I'd love to know what you think of the audiobook, as I think you'd enjoy it, too. I particularly loved the son and daughter sections, and would have loved to have read a whole book just with them. And, yes, going to casually dive into some WIT titles now, with no deadlines, ha. x

I have adhd and I love to have your videos on while I am doing other things for example cooking. I noticed especially with The Bee Sting that you don't mention the book at the end by name anymore.
I usually only get interested in books after the review so I have to scroll back and find out how the book was clled again.
Nothing bad just something I noticed. I've seen other RUclipsrs put the title of the book they're talking about in a corner of the video I thought it's a neat idea so one can always keep track of what is being talked about 😊

Thank you for this great blog, Jen! I only read 3 books from the list so far: This Other Eden, If I Survive You, Western Lane. You articulated my thoughts on This Other Eden perfectly! I did not like this book and struggled to finish it. On a better note, I preordered your book and am very much looking forward to it.

So I’ve only been watching and supporting your channel for about 3 or 4 years, but I’ve never missed a single video. And my favourites are these long, long vlogs, to be sure. If I could, I’d simply listen to you talk about books all day long, you know, just keep the video as a constant background to my life 😂 Thanks for your work; I can’t wait to read your new poetry book! x
P.S.: are you still interested in continuing your Fairytales with Jen series at some point in the future? 👀

All the little birds-hearts sounds interesting, not sure about Prophet Song like the premise but I have just read a book with no chapters and every page was full of text I found it difficult to read, I do like having chapters. ❤
