@@juditherwinneville7797 has nothing to do with it not being "for" me. I'm 36, I'm not in a position to go to a prestigious art school and spend all of my time becoming a classically trained musician at this point in my life. I enjoy playing music and I enjoy the "work" that it requires, my comment was entirely about the fact that it's actually a bit of a relief to just accept that the level of skill he's talking about is literally not even a thing I can reasonably achieve, and instead can just enjoy music at my own level
Viola power, one more to the pack! Subscribing right now! Great video, by the way. Summarized hours of my speeches in classes to my students, on the power of consistency and community. Thanks a lot!
They learn slowly and don't practice mistakes. So, how many times a week would you change your strings at the conservatory, 7-8 hours a day playing, you must have had some rock like callouses as well.
Remember, we were all (well …most) poor college students. Usually when you had a big recital or chamber music show. And you do build up callouses, but not too bad. They affect the sound!
I would love to go to a conservatory... I think. Tired of having a passion that I can't dedicate myself to fully because it's not a good financial choice.
Thank you, this was a very pleasant watch. There is something about your phrasing that just grabs my attention 😂 If you go to conservatory to study composition, will the experience differ? In my mind, I imagine less practice, and that you must learn piano, and then lots of homework and theory. Is that accurate at all? (Not that I'm invested -- I am much too frail to go pro music 😂)
Thank you for the compliment! At Eastman composition majors had to have a primary instrument other than piano. So they were kind of on the hook like the rest of us to some degree. Then they did have piano work to do, and yes… Lots of theory! But it was kind of assumed they would arrive with the theory knowledge to write.
This was quite helpful!! I'm just a beginner on piano 🎹 and I need to know what it takes to get really good at my instrument. Now I've heard of a lot classical music musicians, but this is the first time I've heard of Arthur Ross and I'm glad I was enlightened!! The music 🎶 world is full of talented musicians and I'd like to hear Arthur play!! 😊
First day watching several videos....Wow. Do you post vids of you playing Viola? Can you talk about your instrument/s? Can you share your views about 5 string viola?... Thank you in advance! Great vid, great content, great voice!
I used to do practice snippet videos. They’re old (in time and style), but they are on the channel. I e been thinking of doing some new playing videos, better this time.
If you are interested, the key is to determine what you want to do as a player, then seek out that knowledge specifically. Private instruction is the way to go, but make sure the person knows what you’re interested in. And don’t be afraid to ask them, if they have the ability and experience to teach you exactly what you want. Good luck! 👍
@@arthurross2974 Thanks. That I'll do. In fact, your whole channel is interesting. As a natural play-by-ear piano player I gave 95% talent and 5% discipline. And I have seen that discipline paid off more.
This was super helpful. Now I know I'll never be classically trained, so I can just get on with my life and enjoy playing music as a hobby 😂
You’re in a fantastic position; all the joy of music without all that pesky work! Enjoy!! 😎
I can still make the effort though.
@@sandrajoseph2432 good for you 😊
@arthurross2974, but don't you just LOVE that pesky work? It definitely isn't for everyone!

No wonder I've never mastered any instrument. Think I'll sign myself up for some private lessons and music camps to begin. God bless you fine sir.
I love it! Let’s go!! 🔥
Arthur… I must congratulate you on your presentation… it has really cleared up a number of issues I’ve been living with…👍🏻
Thanks…Glad to help! :-)
You have a way with words, Sir!
Pleasant. Great sound as well.

It's definitely a commitment. You can make a living, but the choice is not an easy one.
Well said sir

Came across your channel by chance. Enjoying it very much...very insightful. Thank you, sir.
Appreciate it!

Ha ha! I remember ducking the kick out time when I had a deadline approaching!
One of the things that they don't do is waste time on social media. The great musicians also don't waste their time with pop music.
I mean there's twoset violin...
I don’t know…some pop music is really great! :-)
Viola? Viola! Please post videos about viola. Were you at Eastman when George Taylor was there?
Yes, he was my teacher!
About last point
I would rather have to practice classical guitar for 12 hours a day than study chemistry and math for the same time
That was my “calculation“ as well!😉 Thanks for watching!
They practise 40 hours a day.
The ling ling work out
No wonder I'm stuck as a musician. I have never mastered the technicality of the instrument.

yes, these are the reasons classical music is concidered "art music".
Yep:-)
🙏🏽 thank you love your content
