    In the passed few years, my dad has really gotten into our Scots-Irish heritage. That's Scots that went to Ireland after stuff kicked off in Britain that later went to America when stuff kicked off in Ireland. That doesn't magically make us as Scottish as people from Scotland, but it gives us history unique to us.

    • @altariia
      @altariia Год назад +27

      As a person from Scotland living in the US it's very frustrating to me when people say "I'm Scottish". On the other hand, I'm happy people are excited about Scotland and if they say "I have Scottish heritage" that's cool! But they're not Scottish, they're American with Scottish heritage.

    • @mega-egg5808
      @mega-egg5808 Год назад +5

      @@altariia its unique to younger countries with a lot of immigration that there is not a real sense of identity with where you live, as a Canadian, the only sense of historical patriotism we have is really disgusting (if you are not aware, up until the 90's there were STILL residential schools that were historically used to kidnap and house indigenous children and make them "civilized", and currently there is still a huge inequality gap if you are indigenous) the history is not something i am proud of, so it makes sense to me when people want to feel as though they have an identity related to a country, they would not chose the countries relevant history of genocide, even though this is not the only soil that has occurred on, there is very little heritage that isnt directly related to the immigrants who moved here, or the colonizers who settled here. (plus, learning about your families history is kind of cool)

    Not only am I not an expert, I'm not even a hobbyist. But in terms of coloring a cake that has no leavening, I might try hold back the egg whites, mix and color the rest of the batter, then fold in whipped egg whites to try to keep it as airy and fluffy as possible, if that texture is important to me.

    • @kellygoodfellow1316
      @kellygoodfellow1316 Год назад +1

      That’s such a simple, clever solution: add a little color to the batter, then a little color to the egg whites. I guess the only downside is a couple more bowls to clean. But probably totally worth it. Thank you!

    About the ancestry: I admit to being a bit annoyed whan someone from the US claims they are e.g. Polish when only their great grandparents came from there and they don't even speak Polish and never visited that country. If it's worded like "I have polish ancesters/my family originally came from XY" or something like that, I don't mind it at all. I feel like the distinction is important, there is a big difference to the people who actually live in that other country (or at least often visit family there etc.) and experience the culture first hand rather than the handed down family traditions.
    I myself e.g. simply say I'm German, even though my grandparents on one side came from Croatia. But both my parents were born here and I only got a tiny glimpse into Croation culture, so it would feel wrong to call myself Croation-German or something like that - even though technically my father is the child of immigrants. It would feel appropriate if i was raised bilingual, often stayed in Croatia for a certain amount of time, had connections there etc. I guess that's the approach most Europeans have.

      I will only get into this discussion if asked. But honestly as a white person we are mutts. We can all eat foods from anywhere anyway

    • @PapeySapote
      @PapeySapote Год назад +1

      Usually when you ask an American what they are you’re asking their ancestry which is why we don’t specify that it’s ancestry because it’s common knowledge here.

    • @villagereadinglibrary933
      @villagereadinglibrary933 Год назад +1

      This is an attitude that is seemingly common amongst Europeans (getting annoyed when Americans claim to be anything other than American). We here in America do this because we don't see being "American" as a cultural identity. Therefore ancestory is one of the only ways we have of categorizing ourselves. Also, many of us have a lot of admiration and respect for our 'relatives' overseas, no matter how distant. It is sad that the feeling is rarely mutual. Hopefully, no American is trying to represent themselves as "just as Irish/Italian/Polish/etc" as an individual that is actually from that part of the world. To any American that does act that way, that is just silliness.

I've grown up in a Korean-Norwegian home, and "claiming" my Asian side has always been difficult due to racism etc. But there's a difference between me, a 50 % Korean person, whose mom has taught me about Korea and that culture, claiming to be Korean, and a person who is many times removed doing the same. What I have seen with some Americans, is that they fully claim to be whatever, lets say Scottish, but they don't really have any connection to Scotland, and the "culture" that they have grown up with is just merely a caricature of the actual culture. I don't know if any of that makes any sense, but that's the gist of it

    Mascarpone is basically cream, so you may have already whipped the mascarpone to early butter stage. That's where the grainyness might come from if there isn't an additive.
    The thing with US Americans calling themselves "Italian" etc. instead of "Italian American" is that you don't live there, you often don't speak the language, and you are imposing yourselves on people that actually ARE Italian etc. It's like calling yourselves a cruise liner captain when you have been on one cruise as a tourist. At least learn the word "mascarpone", there is no "r" in the first syllable. ❤
    You are US American and you can celebrate your culture if you want to, and that's a great thing.

  • @moanamayer

    I don't think that anyone would be offended or confused if you Americans said something like: my ancestors are from x or my heritage is x
    But most Americans are like I'm Italian or German or whatever and that makes us think that you actually live there, used to live there, speak the language or go there regularly. So it's just confusing.
    I did an exchange year in Texas and the amount of people who told me they are german... I would get so excited, asked from where in Germany they were from and started to speak in german just to find out that some ancestor about 5 generations back was german...

    One tip for mixing stuff into batters with whipped eggwhites as the base. Take a little bit of the egg mixture and put it in a separate bowl, mix the dye into that small amount of batter super thoroughly, then drop and fold it into the main bowl. Mixing the dye with a small part first helps disperse the dye a lot easier. Learned that trick from Ann Reardan

    I love your mom! Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts as well. The fact that you made it for your mom makes it special. We moms are like that.
    I’m Italian too, as my great grandparents came from Turino (separately) in the late 1880s (Gr-grandma Mary) and early 1890s (Gr-grandpa John). They married in 1899, I think. The town my Grandpa grew up in in the UP of Michigan is still very Italian.
    When I went to Italy in 1992, I got a lesson in properly pronouncing my surname at a cambio in Florence. Never mind that all I wanted to do was cash a traveler’s check, but this guy wouldn’t give me my cash until I’d properly pronounced *both* Ns of the double N in the middle. (Made me wonder if they’d done that to Grandpa 15 years earlier when he and Grandma went to Italy to meet his cousins.) Interestingly, I didn’t get belittled for stating my heritage there. In fact, despite knowing I was American, I had people trying to speak to me in Italian or trying to teach it to me. I did get funny looks when I’d say my name and immediately spell it though.

Whatever you think makes you an Italian, or Scotish... is just a bastardization of the original culture. Bits and pieces mixed in with predominantly American culture.
    And as far as I know, you are the only country that does it, too. You don't see Germans walking around here saying things like, "I'm quarter Czech on my grandfather's side."

    Bro people from other countries who get mad cause an amercian says "I'm italian" or whatever nationality it may be need to stfu. American families often hold the culture of whatever country their family originally came from very close and associate heavily with that culture. It's a part of their identity. Things like the food they eat growing up, the people they surround themselves with, the music they listen to and often times the languages they speak are all heavily based on that culture. It feels invalidating to me to tell someone that their heritage doesn't matter because they weren't born in or don't still live in that original country where their family came from.

    • @blairfujin
      @blairfujin Год назад +3

      If they don't speak the language and have never been to the country of their heritage and neither their parents did, it's just weird for them to call themselves of that nationality. Just say you're American of such and such ancestry, because that's what you are.

    • @inesbauer3360

      You kinda have a point but I can't stand when Americans call themselves Latinos for example without being able to speak the language or not knowing anything about how life is in Latin American countries. Americans have told me I'm not latina because I'm white while I was born and raised in a latin American country and they where born and raised in the USA. I just hate when they use their heritage to justify ignorance.

    Marscapone needs everything to be exactly room temperature. It anything is the slighted bit cold itll curdle like that. But if it's too warm it's overwhisked faster and curdles. I've found it to be super temperamental.

    • @k1tukwfyer
      @k1tukwfyer Год назад +44

      Yeah, it totes curdled here. A huge thing is you have to let the egg mixture cool. If it's warm at all when you add it to the Mascarpone it will curdle.
      I've had the best luck making sure everything is cool, and the Mascarpone cold. Whip the cream separately, and beat the cold Mascarpone just enough to loosen it up. Then fold the cold whipped cream and cooled egg mixture in by hand, in thirds maybe, until just combined.
      It will still taste good if it curdles, but you get a grainy texture due to the fat separation, and a greasy coating in your mouth as it melts (in case anyone happening by was wondering.)

    Sorry for speaking on behalf of all Europeans but this is my take: We don't get offended if you actually explore and appreciate the culture of the country. What usually annoys us is y'all being like "I'm Irish" and not being able to tell anything more besides stereotypes. If you want to be a part of the culture and acutally appreciate your heritage then please do your research from people living in the country. We all are lucky enough to have an access to the internet and you guys are lucky enough that most Europeans are either fluent in English or good enough to communicate on some lvl with you, so gathering any information you need is extremly simple
