  • The West Somerset Railway held their Spring Gala between March 22nd. and March 25th.2018. Spring like conditions didn't really appear until the last day of the gala with other days being largely overcast and chilly. The theme was Great Western routes and branches and the home based locos were joined by visitors in the form of S160 No.6046, which in addition to passenger duties, worked a military freight train each day, Panniers 7714 and 9466, Hall 6990 'Witherslack Hall' and auto fitted 1450 and autotrailer. The video starts with some of the double headed trains which operated at the gala before shots of the other locos. Scenes include;
    6990 'Witherslack Hall' and 7822 'Foxcote Manor' - Watchet and Splash Point.
    6960 'Raveningham Hall' and 6990 'Witherslack Hall' - Williton and Blue Anchor.
    7714 and 9466 - Castle Hill

    FANTASTC ! Sir you are a star. Thanks also to crews and management for putting on a super show. It looks pretty chilly, tiny amounts of snow still under some hedges. I loved the 14xx Auto. All locos appeared in fine fettle. I'm certainly going to save this one. MANY THANKS. del.

    Your vid just jogged a memory of being hauled by a pannier tank from Banbury to Oxford. Thanks!

    25 minutes of pleasure for those Australians like me who love British trains and scenery. The platform shot made a nice change and showed the loco up close, while the closing shot with the signpost was just exquisite! Thanks Austin. Cliff.

    Thanks, Austin, for a super video. A tremendous variety of locations entirely suiting the selection furnished by the WSR - another excellent gala. I particularly enjoyed the various double-headers, the steep downward looking sequence and the Whisky Trail Crossing. A very well deserved salute from the military train (contrived or not!). Kind regards, Bob.

      Thanks Bob, we always look forward to this gala as spring is usually well underway and the Somerset countryside looks lovely with the new lambs in the fields. Rather more chilly than we'd have liked this year but enjoyable all the same.

    Just echoing what others have said really superb footage and locations. Bit biased but gotta love theS160 working its shift well. Loved the pannier workings too!

      Thank you. The S160 did well after a bit of a shaky start, can't understand why more people don't like them. Should have got more shots of the Panniers really, made a mess of one double header!

      And the long crank throw of most GW engines gives them a certain extra presence on the move.

    Great video Austin...I take it You didn't renew Your Lineside pass this Year...Looks like You didn't need it....the locations You used were superb.....Best wishes.....Steve.

      Thanks Steve. As the railway basically said we weren't wanted because we'd done the PTS online and to do a PTS course in person we'd have to travel to Somerset for a course a week before the gala or attend one on the Saturday of the gala which seemed odd timing we definitely didn't renew! Perhaps one day common sense will prevail and they will allow an online course again. Seems to work for other railways

    Excellent video! You seem to have caught the sun more on the Sunday. Weather wasn't the best on the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning while I was there. Love the final shot with the road sign in the foreground and hall in the background! I do like the arty shots! Tom

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  6 лет назад

      Thanks Tom, looking back I don't think I made the best of the Sunday sun, had a few more shots at Williton and Blue Anchor but didn't use them. The shot at the Vellow crossroads is a favourite of mine and I tried it again on Sunday in late afternoon sunshine with the S160 on a passenger working but the wind carried the sound away

    Pheasant playing chicken in the opening shot. It just about avoided becoming lunch. Terrific sounds from the various Manor/Hall and Hall/Hall doubleheaders. I'm always impressed with the power of the Panniers, handling six coaches there with ease.
    I do think that 'military train' was a bit contrived though; If it wanted to look reasonably authentic it should have had a consistent load rather than such a random collection as that; one Jeep, a Dodge weapons carrier and a landing craft?

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  6 лет назад

      Thanks, we did think it would be roast pheasant for lunch at one point, they don't seem the smartest bird. With regard to the military train perhaps they had to go with whatever vehicles were available

    That was a joy to watch from beginning to end, Austin. Superbly turned out locos in idyllic locations, perfectly captured. Steam videos don't come better than this. Thank you for posting. Kind regards Frank.

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  6 лет назад

      Many thanks Frank, it's often overlooked how much hard work goes into preparing the locos and getting them looking good. After the S160 had problems on the Thursday they worked until 4am. to get her ready for service
