Thanks, Matt. I just ordered this lens for use on my Nikon Zf. I’m already using the Voigtlander 28/1.5 and 15/4.5 with the TTArtisan "chipped" adapter. This maintains the camera's "rangefinder" and green box focus indicators.
Hi Matt, the dots at 2:33 are reflections of the pixels on your camera sensor. This can occur when light directly hits the lens and the sensor behind when the photo is taken. The micro lenses on top of the pixels back-scatter the light which can reflect on the back lens element and hit the sensor again. Would be interesting to have the CV 40/1.2 compared with the new CV 50/1.2 M lens. Biggest advantage for me I could see from the 40 mm FL is that I could still use it without external viewfinder on my M3. I am using the CV 35/1.2 II so far instead but always on my M6 instead, never on my M3.
I have had the 40mm f/1.2 for a few years now. I have come to like it a lot on an M240. It seems to have very nice color on this camera. I shoot mostly at mid f-stops like f/5.6 and the color and IQ are good there. Sharp but not eye bleeding. Yes, it is a good lens to have I agree with your review.
I did a basic DGK chart test comparing this (Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.2) lens to two others: a Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.2 and a Leica Summilux-M 35 f1.4 Asph (11726). The results from the 40mm Nokton were staggeringly disappointing. So bad in fact that I re-did the test again, convinced I had screwed something up. Camera was Leica M11-D. For focus I used both the RF patch and a visoflex2 with peaking. This test was prompted by results I had been getting using the 40mm Nokton on a Leica M-A with low ISO B&W film which I processed myself. Try as I might, I just could not seem to get the detail or contrast I was expecting. When I switched out the Nokton for the Summilux it was as if someone had just cleaned the windows of the world. Puzzled at what was a remarkable difference I bought the DGK test chart and performed was is an admittedly very simple comparison. It's worth noting that the 35mm Nokton exhibited some of the same lack of clarity/contrast as the 40mm, just not to the same high degree. The 35mm Nokton fell roughly in the middle between the 35mm Summilux-M clarity and the 40mm Nokton 'fog'. Could it be that my 'copy' of the 40 is bad? Yes, but honestly I doubt it. If the 35mm Nokton had performed better I might suspect the 40 was bad. As far as I'm concerned, this test confirmed for me that despite all those claiming Voigtlander has the quality to challenge or replace a Leica lens, I have to respectfully disagree. There is, frankly, no comparison. I'll be selling my Voigtlander lenses and saving up for the Leica 28 and 50mm Summilux-M. If there's enough interest, I can gather and post the test photos I took. But i suspect that most will say I'm the one who's wrong here (for any of a dozen reasons) so maybe there's no point. In any case, i thought it was important to share this since the overwhelming chatter ALL OVER RUclips by virtually countless photogs and pundits is that the Voigtlanders are undervalued gems. Maybe this is true for some, but I don't 'see' the value. In the end, the first thing that transforms our subject is the glass. So that old adage is threatening to become my new mantra. "It's all about the glass".
Thanks for sharing. Yes we need to buy what works for us. Ignore everyone else. I don’t like the 35 Lux ASPH but I like the v3 Cron as it’s like an Ultron with a mist filter on. More glow and less sharp giving artier more filmic shots. The Distagon is the clear winner for 35/1.4, no contest. Sadly it’s big.
Excellent. Interested in the lens as a Nikon user but this was extremely helpful because the perspective was a working professional thinking through his lens choices.
Thanks Oliver. I think I learn from each of my videos too thanks to very knowledgeable viewers like yourself. Thanks for sharing. I guessed from the sensor as I saw it with 2 lenses and the pattern wasn't going to be coming from the lens but that was the limit of my knowledge!
Great video Matt. I know this is a couple of years old now but still very relevant today. I like 40mm as a focal length and like this series of Voigtländer lenses.
Hey Matt, I just purchased this lens precisely because of this video and I love it. 40mm has always been my preferred focal length, and I was actually looking at the Ricoh GRiiix of all things. Glad I got this lens in stead. Thanks for sharing. Jan.
Chameleon of a lens, it serves multiple purposes and it's relatively small and light for a f1.2 lens, it's my most used lens specially on those grab your camera and get out type days
I use the 40 f1.2 on a Sony and it’s a very nice lens. I haven’t used it extensively, because of our lockdown. Now that’s over I will be using it more. Voigtlander make a close focus adapter for the Sony, which means that its Leica mount lenses can be just that shade more versatile. Anyway, I have appreciated your video, because it shows its potential.
Very nice! I had exactly the same (except my CL is in silver) configuration for quite some time now. Even after I bought the 11663, I still find myself return to this combo (CL+40/1.2) from time to time. Easy to carry around, also great performer!
Brilliant video and it is great that Voigtlander are sending you samples direct. Fingers crossed you’ll get to test the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 mkii for us.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Very excited to see your review, I actually wrote a fanboy note to Voigtlander saying that you were the man for these things and they should send you lenses, don't worry, not a crazed super fan, just enjoy your videos as they're enjoyable, useful and yes I may have noticed the odd pretty girl
Voigtlander made the 40mm popular and thx to them for that. This one seems to be a good compromise with old look full opened and getting high sharp’esss and contrast buy closing it starting at f2.8 so the best of the 2 worlds. About the differences between f1.4 and f1.2, I would say that the f1.4 is better for the M and with a Leica SL the f1.2 is of course better dimensionned. As I am Nikon user and just bought the Z version following this video. So Matt again you cost me a lot !!! Fortunately I was able to find it at good price at 660€ in France which is I think a good bargain. I am impatient to receive it for mounting it on my Zf with its ability of using manual lenses on it.
I use this lens on my Nikon Z7. Sharp even wide open at F1.2. Very good subject separation. Focus shift is negligible. Pleasant bokeh. Wide open, contrast is decent, a cross between SONNAR and PLANAR look. Stopped down it gets very contrasty. Small size and balance well for mirrorless cameras. All in all, not as perfect as a big & modern lens like Sigma 40 F1.2, but at 3.8x times less weight, it’s great for people who wish to carry less. So far two AF adapters are available for Z cameras, making focusing a breeze.
THE BEST! Great job MATT! I find that this lens renders just like the Zeiss 50 mm 1.5 only better with no downside. I absolutely love it. I own it in the Leica M mount as well as the Sony mount.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom BTW I shoot the 40mm 1.4 just as much as the 40mm 1.2. Sometimes I just feel like being more compact and a bit more funky/organic with the 1.4. I really love both of them.
@@michaelneumann1865 Great, yes it was the 40/1.4 that got me to Leica and taught me f-stop etc. (used it on a Lumix G1 when starting out). I have a lot to thank that little lens for!
@@adams.555 YES When Steve Huff made the assertion that they rendered differently I became obsessed and ran multiple tests. Absolutely the same rendering. His test was using a Leica M10 camera and a Sony camera and when He used both lenses on the Sony it was unscientific and a bit sloppy. Although I am a big fan of Steve Huff as well. I do enjoy the M mount version because its smaller, lighter and can be used with a Techart Pro adapter on Sony for autofocus.
You need to ask Fuji channels I think. I only review and test their M lenses sorry. (I know many Sony users adapt the M version to their bodies and love it).
Matt, have you tested the Voigtlander 28mm? I own The Voigtlander Nokton 58mm//1.4 and the Color Skopar 28mm. I use The 58 mainly for portraits and the 28 for urban/city photography. I also own a Zeiss planar 85/1.4 snd Zeiss distagon 35mm/2. I love my manual focus Voigtlanders and Zeiss lenses. I have these 4 for 1,5 year know and didn’t use a single autofocus lens anymore.
Nice review. I use both the 40mm 1.2 and 50mm 1.2 and if you don't mind the extra 10mm, I reckon the 50mm is nicer. It's got more pleasing bokeh in low light and in dark environments with bright light sources (the 40mm produces "onion rings"). For B/W on film I seem to get better contrast on the 50mm too.
Thanks Jan, yes if you've not seen the 50mm f1.2 video yet I liked that one too, mainly as 50mm worked nicely for film too. 40mm I preferred on the CL.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, with the 1.5 crop factor of the cl I can see how the 40 would work better for you. I almost exclusively work with fx sensors. I've put a few lenses on a Fuji camera in the past but while results were ok, they had nothing to do with fx results. That said, I still prefer 4x5 b/w film over anything digital. For landscapes I shoot and process Velvia too, but it's a bit of a tedious process. Love the M2 though, very little that beats it in my book. Ok, maybe and M6 .85...
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Sounds nice. I love the various fomapan films, great latitude and lots of creative possibilities when processing... Good value for money too.
The DoF of the 40mm focused to 70cm at f/1.2 is only 2cm. You can place your camera on a tripod but how to make a lively model stay in focus? At one meter you already have 4cm of DoF. Do you think you can manage it with the rangefinder? Your chances will be better with an autofocus system, eye recognition activated.
Yes I tell models to stand still when shooting fast apertures. If the models can't they get less good photos from me. 1000% possible. All my images are proof, M2, M3, M4-P, M6..
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It is an excellent lens. I shot a calm guy with M10 using the RF at f/1.2 and the result surprised me. LV with the jumpy focus verification makes me nervous. BTW I used your cool "Masculine BW" preset 😎!
Interesting video - wouldn't previously have considered this lens (I have the 40 Summicron) but now will. When you do comparison shots (eg the 40mm 1.2 vs 1.4) at each aperture it would be useful to show the result split-screen rather than consecutively - easier to evaluate that way.
Best is different for everyone. 1.2 is pointless on a CL/CLE due to the poor RF accuracy. I'd get the smaller Nokton 1.4 and stop down or my goto is the 40 Heliar which I use on my CL. See those vidoes.
Yes, very useful video. However, instead, I'd love to see you test the Leica T (not TL, not T2) with the 40mm f1.4 (not the 1.2). Why? The T, with firmware 1.4 or higher installed, is a sleeper hit. Together with the Nokton f1.4 I'd think they'd make for a terrific portable quality combination. I like everything about it except for its low shot to battery count. No sweat if I'm asking for too much, Matt. Learning so much from your channel. All good.
I’ve been trying to like the 35-50mm fov . I love your creative look with 50mm . I have a Nikkor 55 f/1.2 that I love . I have acquired a 65mm from Sigma and a 90 and like both . 55-65 just feels nice and a 90 is just so easy. As I start ( because I am going to start collecting M glass ) into the Leica world , I am going to start with Voigtlander lenses. I like Flickr images from the 50mm f/1.2 the best and I’ve tried like hell to avoid that focal length. I believe I work subconsciously to have a different look. I shoot a ton with 28mm and lately with 65 . Tweener focal lengths and I feel 40 is that . 40 is so normal I’ve been struggling with it and being creative. I have the Sigma Art 40mm for Nikon . I use it for video mostly and like it best for small room interviews for my tight shot and 28 as a wide . You seemed to give better life to a 40 than I’ve seen most do but it still did not feel good except for the closer shots indoors. I think I like the attributes of this lens but I liked the Flickr photos shot with the 35 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.2 better . Thanks for this awesome review and love your work . I follow or look at or study no photographers but have your work to a small degree. I feel what you do is similar to what I feel when I shoot. My stuff looks different but feel and look can be different. Thanks again for this channel
Thanks! You I’m more comfortable with 35mm or 50mm on M bodies as I can compose via the framelines. If I used a 40mm today on the SL I should get better results. 50mm is my go to but when I did the Signa 65mm video I did enjoy that FL. 90mm is good outside to melt the background.
I would like to have this lens in my arsenal but I don´t have a camera for it yet. I got the 40mm f/2 SL instead last Monday and have been testing it out this week. To cut a long story short I am very happy with it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The Angry Photographer, a lens collector and expert on RUclips , rated it as absolutely incredible and in the top 1% of best lenses ever made. As you rightly say, it’s a mix of old style and modern rendering. I use it on my M3 using all the viewfinder as framing as you suggested. His recommendations are worth listening to as he has no affiliate links and gets no kickbacks as he keep reminding everyone!
@@L1RMO thanks, yes if you ever see one of my videos or photos on Flickr check below as there’s normally a tonne of info shared that many people miss 👍🏻😊
Awesome review and I will own this lens . They make it in the VM mount and Nikon Z and Sony E . I have the VM adapter for both mounts and my Sony is a close focus one so I’ll probably get the VM mount. From testing against the Sony E the VM had softer looking bokeh and a nicer looking image rendering. Maybe microcontrast? Not sure but looked nicer even shot on the Sony body adapted .
I didn’t do that comparison of the lenses . It’s a review I saw a guy do on RUclips. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Very much appreciated.
It's still the smallest and lightest of the 1.2 Voigtlanders the 50mm 1.2, 35mm 1.2 (all 3 versions) The 40mm 1.2 is the shortest and lightest of the bunch. I love the 1.4 version but the 40m 1.2 is just more refined looking. Better creamy bokeh and close focus too.
Hi Matt, thank you for helping us interpret light and shadows through your.... Leica eyes. I have a Voigtlander 50mm 2.0 apo lanthar soldered to a Sony A7RIV, but I am interested in the Voigtlader 1.5/75mm sony e version. I am very satisfied with the superlative 2/50 apo but I always think about selling the 2/50 Apo and buying this 1.2/40 along with the 1.5/75 sony e. I know that only I can answer that but... I would like to know what your thoughts are based on your experience having tried them all. Thank you so much
75/1.5 is fantastic, much more arty than the APO. Tick box. 40/1.2 is nice for mirrorless and more compact. Also good. 40 is popular with Sony users , a Patreon users it all the time via a TechArt adapter.
Thanks Matt for answering. I know there is a lot of difference between the 28mm/35mm/40mm but.... which lens would you choose for street portraits, to combine with the 75mm? Thanks again. Greetings@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Hi Matt, thanks again for this video. I know it is already a three years old. Just want to ask whether this lens is suitable to mount on a Rollei 35 RF as the camera has 40mm frame lines. But my point is....would it work well? Thew original Sonnar 40mm f 2.8 is hard to find and expensive
Hey Matt- great video as always! Really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these videos! I'm trying to decide between the Voigt 40 1.2 and 40 1.4 for my Leica M6... I really only shoot between f5.6-f8, and shoot mostly travel, street, and landscape in good light. I'm leaning towards the 1.4 due to its smaller size. Wondering which one you'd advise I get. Once you get past f5.6 would you say their performance is pretty much equal?
I am not sure about that. Zeiss has just not released any new lenses since the 1.4/35. The other thing what market is left? New Leicas are out of reach for most people. Used Leicas are getting expensive too. I cannot afford a Leica but I have Zeiss glass. Everything is moving to mirrorless anyway. The EF or F mount do not hold the future.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Nothing official, so perhaps there's hope - just that there's only been one release in the last ten years or so. I wish they would return (and release M cameras). Now that Voigtlaender are releasing high-end pieces that seems like another signal, since they may have been branded ZEISS lenses otherwise.
Great video Matt!! Question: Have you reviewed, or do you have plans to review, some of the new, very compact "Vintage Leica M" lenses by Voigtlander? Specifically the 21mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar and 35mm f/2.0 Ultron.
Thanks Gerald, I hope to yes. If you saw the 50mm f1.2 review you will know than Voigtlander sent me that lens to test. (and over on Patreon today I told the guys there the latest news on what might be (is) up next! :)
Thank you Mike! Sorry i;'ve missed loads of comments so trying to reply to them all. And to answer your 'hope' on this occasion you wish will be granted, stay tuned! :)
@@epstar83 Thanks, luckily as the channel starts to grow and if I get enough likes on each video so it gets pushed out to a wider audience I get the opportunity to test some lenses I don't own.
Yes the 40mm is excellent but less ideal on the M6 as no 40mm FL. Get the 35mm f1.2 instead for improved image quality (or the 50mm f1.2 - very sharp on film at f2).
Hi Arthur, yes it is a nice lens. I have the Minolta too (see that video if you want to compare images). You might also want to watch my recent 40mm shoot out test video.
Hi Matt, Thanks for another excellent video on Voigtländer lenses for Leica M mount. What about the Zeiss lenses for the Leica M system? Any plans to explore this lens universe? Another candidate could be Meyer Görlitz with the Trioplan and Primoplan lenses (special bokeh). Kind regards, Roland
Thank you Roland. Did you miss by 2 Zeiss lens videos so far? I’ve reviewed those I have and the blog reviews 2 more I had and sold. If I get more I’ll be sure to do more reviews. Thanks for your ideas. 👍🏻
For the Nikon Z bodies, would you buy this Lens or the 35 mm 1.2 v3? That one is maybe a better Lens, But this one is native for Z mount, transmits exit, has assistance for manual focus. Yes I know 40 is not 35…but is it a big difference?
Thank John! Sorry I missed this. Not yet but if this video gets enough likes (and the next one ..wink wink.. 1 more is coming).. then I can try to get one.
Any recommendations for reasonably priced third party lens hoods for this one? Preferably non vented and round, shallow ish mostly for protection - I'd want something that clips on on the outside since I want to use filters sometimes. The Voigtländer hoods are just ridiculously expensive for a little piece of metal to clip on.. I bought this lens to adapt to my Fuji X-T5 and absolutely loving it next to my ZF Zeiss 50mm f1.4 - the user experience and feel in the hand of these Cosina made lenses is just absolutely outstanding, and they've got brilliant optical character that pairs great with Fuji's film simulation features to create some really unique out-of-camera results.
Great review! I was just shooting with my 40 f1.2 on the Leica CL, and I think it's a great match. I like to shoot with it on the CL than the 50 f1.4 'lux or the 35 f2 'cron. Easier (for me) to acquire focus.
I love Voigtländer lenses - though I only own one myself (for Rolleiflex SL35 cameras), so quite a different camera experience. But, if I do manage to save up for a Leica M camera, I'll be looking for Voigtländer lenses for sure. On another matter, while aesthetically I love the look of the cigarette smoke photo, I would suggest, that it's time to stop creating beautiful photos of people smoking... There is simply nothing beautiful about any of the consequences of smoking.
Thanks Niels, perhaps look out for a M4-P as they uesd to be cheaper. Re. smoking yes strangely (from my photo, I am very anti smoking (as someone very healthy)) but she was smoking with her mate so I just took a photo to test the lens into the sun with the smoke backlit. Obviously she posed for the shot but we didn't go with a plan to shoot smoke photos. (Sadly my photography taste is from the eras where smoking was normal so for a guy especially I think it can add to a photo.. but a pretty girl less so). Neither are correct I know i'm just speaking as an artist, and especially if shooting B&W film with the correct clothes/ look). (There are a full series of such photos on my Patreon with a guy shot on film).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I get the appeal about shooting smoke, and as I said, I love the photo. I just hope to see the day where we have no new smokers in the young generations, and to get there, we need to make some changes. As far as getting a Leica, I made a deal with myself to not buy new camera gear for the next 6 months - then I should be able to get a nice one. (I actually have my eyes on a black M5 "50 Jahre" Mint in box, that I hope no one else will want to buy for the next 6 months, but it's a long shot)
@@NPJensen thanks and agreed. Mint Leica, nice! I’d be scared it will go, can you try to obtain it a few months sooner and pay someone back, to be safe!?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well, there is also an M6 Titanium in very good condition at that same store, that has been for sale for at least 10 months. I figure there is a chance - and if they both go, something else will show up. There are better chances of finding a good Leica around here than almost any other camera brand.
Yes this is why it's easy to end up with a few different systems! :) I had the same issue when I went from a Lumix to Nikon and couldn't use the Voigtlander 40 1.4. Eventually I sold the D800 and bought Leica so I could use it again. True story!
hi, great video. I'll be getting a Zf and thinking of going for Nokton 40 F1.2 for autofocus with Techart TZM02. Is there any difference compared to the Z mount version of 40mm Nokton F1.2 made for Nikon Z? Which version would you recommend the M mount with TZM02 adapter or the Z mount manual focus ? Thank you.
Thanks! I’ve never used a Z lens but I think they tried to replicate the original M versions. I always buy M or F mount do I can use lenses on film bodies too
On the Leica CL factoring in the 1.5x crop factor which lens is your favorite the 35mm f1.2 or the 40mm f`.2 ? With the crop the CL has a 50mm FOV and the 40mm has a 60mm FOV. I happen to have the heavy TL 35mm Leica TL APS-c with FOV like a 50mm but it auto focuses making it unique for an indoor and low light lens for just grabbing shots.
Thanks Matt, I really enjoy your content. I've recently discovered your channel after purchasing my first Leica. Gone for an m8 for that CCD sensor. I have a GFX 50r and I find everything too clinical with new gear so I'm selling everything and going backwards!. Tempted by the Voigtlander. Does the m8 bring up the 50mm frame lines with the 40mm lens?
Thanks Costas, I can't remember regarding the framelines BUT.. I think I mention it in my M8 video (regarding the 40/1.4 and it should behave the same).
im addicted to your channel, and have subscribed to it.. just for fun, any chance u can test leica lens on m bodies vs sony a7iii or a7riii bodies. thanks very much
Hey Matt, I've got an M9 Mono and need the extra stop but am curious about viewfinder blockage without a lens hood. I get that you're using it with an EVF but that's not an option. If it blocks from 4-6pm then that's ok, much more won't work well.
Hey Warren. I only had the lens on loan so can’t test it on my M. It is a fatter lens so expect some finder blockage, can you visit a shop to try one? Lux is longer but thinner.
I dont know if anyone else commented this, but those red dots in the sun star picture could be the sensor. There was a cinema camera that was released where the sensor would reflect back on to the rear lens element and then back on to the sensor and would make those little red dots that are reflections of the individual sensor resistors.
Hi Tyler, yes. Set the lens to 0.7m (I think that's correct for the R3a, I forget), then "walk the lens in" to see focus and don't touch the lens. That's what I do.

I’ve not tried the 35mm v3. The v2 to my eyes gives a different look. Still nice but different. The 40 & 50 get the rave reviews, the 35 less so so I think it’s. Not quite the same. Check the 35 Ultron video. I was so impressed I bought a copy after Voigtlander sent me one to test.
I shoot all/any digital cameras in B&W preview mode but record RAW. I need to visualise in B&W. I then just apply my MrLeica Camera X B&W preset to all images once imported to LR and that is most the work done.
Hello, I’m not sure actually but I don’t think so. If you want an SLR style setup get yourself a Nikon F body (see that video) and then Voigtlander F Mount lenses. I use those.
I love your reviews! You test a lot and I love your photographs. I would love to hear your opinion on the TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 for Leica M cameras. Now I have the Zeiss Planar 2/50 ZM on my Leica M2. It‘s a fantastic lens. My only problem with it is that it is more like a 45-48mm and so the frame lines does not match the Lens. Other than that I can really recommend it. but sometimes it drives me nuts 😁 Is the TTArtisan 50 1.4 maybe a good alternative?
For me no. I have the Minolta CL so I can relate. The rangefinder/ viewfinder is not magnified enough to focus a 1.2 lens. Look at the Minolta 40mm video I did maybe. Sorry if not the answer you wanted!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah, it appears that way. Just wanted to double check. There is a thread on dpreview and fredmiranda but no actual side by side wide open comparisons. Thanks for the feedback!

This with Fuji GFX is just sublime.
Thanks Jack, good info. It's a great little lens.
I just bought this lens. Its amazing!
Congrats! Yes great lens.
Just picked this up for $799 brand new at B&H. 40mm is not my preferred focal length but for the price I gave it a shot.
Nice! It's a strong performer and nice size so hopefully it will work for you.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you!.
Excellent. Interested in the lens as a Nikon user but this was extremely helpful because the perspective was a working professional thinking through his lens choices.
Thanks Stuart!
See my Voigtlander for Nikon F if F mount. I have Z video out soon.
Ok I did it and purchased the VM mount of this lens for my Sony E and Nikon Z bodies.
Now to get the Leica M5 much later in 2023.
Congrats!! Yes i'm similar. I'm happy to buy lenses if I can use on a film body too.
I bought the 35 1.2 on your review and it’s awesome. Thank you!
Thanks Dwayne! I love that 35/1.2 . Great lens! Good to see you hear and sorry I missed this.
I believe, the dots are reflections of the sensor or sensor cover glass. The AR coating is not perfect.
Yes a nice size, I didn't buy it but it's a good performer
yesssss Great video Matt Thanks .... I was waiting for it :) For sure this one will come into my bag for my APSC CL on a M/L adaptor
Thanks Jerome, sorry to keep you! :)
Hey Matt, I just purchased this lens precisely because of this video and I love it. 40mm has always been my preferred focal length, and I was actually looking at the Ricoh GRiiix of all things. Glad I got this lens in stead. Thanks for sharing. Jan.
Thanks Jan! Yes a really nice lens.
Chameleon of a lens, it serves multiple purposes and it's relatively small and light for a f1.2 lens, it's my most used lens specially on those grab your camera and get out type days
Yes! Size is excellent vs 35 & 50 version
Thanks Keith for your feedback and yes true one advantage for Sony shooters is you can focus closer. Top tip thanks.
How much closer do you think we can get on a Sony full frame body? Thanks for the good work man!
Thanks, this is how a lens review should be!
Thank you!
Got it for gfx 50s and loving it.
Sorry for my delayed reply. Nice setup!! :)
Very nice! I had exactly the same (except my CL is in silver) configuration for quite some time now. Even after I bought the 11663, I still find myself return to this combo (CL+40/1.2) from time to time. Easy to carry around, also great performer!
Thanks Seam yes strong combination I think!
Outstanding compositions Matt!
Thank you Frankie!
Brilliant video and it is great that Voigtlander are sending you samples direct. Fingers crossed you’ll get to test the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 mkii for us.
Thanks Marcus.. I have 'a' 50 coming... ;) Maybe out this week so stay tuned!
I've been waiting for this!
Ha thanks! :)
Just ordered one to use alternatively between my M4-2 and X pro3.
Nice! I hope you saw the 5% discount code if bought new!?
Thanks and sorry to cost you money! Totally agree, 1.2 for mirrorless, 1.4 for M
Thanks for sharing and sorry I missed this! Yes I think size especially is good for some users.
THE BEST! Great job MATT! I find that this lens renders just like the Zeiss 50 mm 1.5 only better with no downside. I absolutely love it. I own it in the Leica M mount as well as the Sony mount.
Ha thanks Michael vest kind! Two.. you do like this lens! :) I used to shoot the Zeiss. Great lens but I didn't like the 0.9m close focus.
Does Sony mount of this lens perform as well as Leica one?
@@adams.555 YES When Steve Huff made the assertion that they rendered differently I became obsessed and ran multiple tests. Absolutely the same rendering. His test was using a Leica M10 camera and a Sony camera and when He used both lenses on the Sony it was unscientific and a bit sloppy. Although I am a big fan of Steve Huff as well. I do enjoy the M mount version because its smaller, lighter and can be used with a Techart Pro adapter on Sony for autofocus.
My setup always like this for all camera: fast lens: 50 f1.2; 20 f1.8; 35 mm f1.4; macro lens: 100mm; pancake 26-35 (5 lens)
Nice, yes I like these too!
But macro usually i can cut cost by onling afd 105. So if i need macro i can just buy macro extension
Matt you’re so excited for this one hahah great video as always!
Thanks Kelvin! 😆
Do you think Cossina will make a Voigtlander lens, 40mm f1.2 NOKTON, for the X-mount Fuji Cameras?
Yes I use 4..? version of 28mm Skopars.. I love them LTM, M, F, CRF, + Ultron 28mm f2 M (best but not the smallest)
@@grootbatavia thanks Jan! Stay tuned, 4x5 is coming! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Sounds nice. I love the various fomapan films, great latitude and lots of creative possibilities when processing... Good value for money too.
@@grootbatavia yes I enjoy it! Especially in 120 format.
I'm somewhat partial to 35mm focal length but this one is shorter in length also faster. I'm intrigued.
It's great on mirrorless where you don't need the usual 35mm framelines. The 40mm Heliar 2.8 is my most used lens for my daily carry. See that video.
Thanks, I'm kind of learning on the job with this so bare with me and I will try to 'improve' that for next similar video. Thanks for suggestion!
That lens is perfect for the Minolta CLE! Hey Matt, what’s in your opinion the best 40mm m mount of all times? ✌🏽
All good.
Thanks Jeremy, if I ever get to test one I’ll be sure to share my findings!
Very informative and useful tips
Thank you!
Great review and lens. I used one on the Minolta Cle as it has 40mm frame lines. As I sold the camera I’m selling my lightly used lens.
Thanks, I think the CLE rangefinder is not magnified enough for this lens wide open. I struggle with the Minolta CL for this.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I used it on a M3 as well which has a better viewfinder as you know.
@@melkasculpture-andrianmelk9397 Great yes the M3 is far better. I prefer 50mm to 40mm on the M and on that note stay tuned! ;)

Hi Michael, thanks and sorry I missed this. Yes I agree great lens and it offers a different look to the 40/1.4
Hi Matt, thank you for helping us interpret light and shadows through your.... Leica eyes.
I have a Voigtlander 50mm 2.0 apo lanthar soldered to a Sony A7RIV, but I am interested in the Voigtlader 1.5/75mm sony e version.

75/1.5 is fantastic, much more arty than the APO. Tick box. 40/1.2 is nice for mirrorless and more compact. Also good. 40 is popular with Sony users , a Patreon users it all the time via a TechArt adapter.

If the camera is M mount then you can use any M lens yes. Look at my 40mm f2.8 Heliar videos and blogs on MrLeica.com too.
Thanks, yes if stopping down you might as well get the 1.4. 1.2 is more corrected but probably similar by 5.6.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt! You're awesome!

Thanks Jeremy, sorry I missed this notification. Another similar lens video soon ;) ..begins with a 5.. :)
So it looks like ZEISS have abandoned M-mount now :/ so Voigtlaender are pumping out the higher-end themselves :)
Ah really, thanks for the info. Sad to hear still.
Owning a Leica M6 + TTARTISANS 35 1.4 + 50 1.4, do you think this Voigtlader 40 1.2 will bring me something new?
Yes the 40mm is excellent but less ideal on the M6 as no 40mm FL. Get the 35mm f1.2 instead for improved image quality (or the 50mm f1.2 - very sharp on film at f2).
Sounds like an interesting lens.

For the Nikon Z bodies, would you buy this Lens or the 35 mm 1.2 v3? That one is maybe a better Lens, But this one is native for Z mount, transmits exit, has assistance for manual focus. Yes I know 40 is not 35…but is it a big difference?
I like to buy M mount & F mount only so I can use lenses to shoot film too. So yes M mount is my choice here.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I get it. But let’s make abstraction of the mount and compare which lens is better: 40 mm f/1.2 or 35 mm 1.2 version 3?

Yes just look on eBay for cheap third party hoods. Lots available, all types
Great review! I was just shooting with my 40 f1.2 on the Leica CL, and I think it's a great match. I like to shoot with it on the CL than the 50 f1.4 'lux or the 35 f2 'cron. Easier (for me) to acquire focus.

Great video...do you think this is a viable lens for indie filmmaking?
Thanks! I do t see why not. I shot some of my recent videos on the little Voigtlander 35 f2 Ultron and the 50 APO. No issues
hi, great video.
I happen to have the heavy TL 35mm Leica TL APS-c
with FOV like a 50mm but it auto focuses making it unique for an indoor and low light lens for just grabbing shots.
I’d go with smaller 40 on CL if I owned both as I prefer a better balanced camera setup.
Great video ! Thanks alot Matt ! Very intresting ! Greetings, Roger ;-)
Thank you Roger! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for coming back to me. I'll check it out.
@@costascosta273 no problem!
Matt, when this 40mm is attached to an M film body, do you know which frame lines are brought up?.
Sorry I can't remember if 35mm or 50mm..
Matt, 13:46 you say that Leica CL (aps-c) is yours favourite setup. I understand over full frame (like M9) Could you please elaborate why???
Hi, see my recent vids, currently shooting FF Leica SL more
Have you used the Contax G45mm?
Sorry I've not John, no G lenses.
Thanks for the great video! You said that a tab can be added to lenses. How can I add one to my summicron 50mm v5? Thanks :D
Thank you. I’ve never tried adding a tab personally so you might need to Google it I’m
afraid, sorry!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you a lot. Will check it.

im addicted to your channel, and have subscribed to it.. just for fun, any chance u can test leica lens on m bodies vs sony a7iii or a7riii bodies. thanks very much
Thanks for sub! Stay tuned and I’m sure I’ll work with a Sony shooter at some stage going forward. Currently I don’t have a Sony body to use.
yeah, more new voigtlander please!
Thanks! If this video goes down ok I can ask!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks a lot, looking forward to hearing your opinion on 21 and 75mm... Cheers!
@@mathieumorel448 thanks. I’ve reviewed the 21 Skopar if that’s what you mean? I’ve not tried the 75 yet!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom they got a 21mm Nokton and a Ultron..
@@mathieumorel448 Nokton! Woo nice. Ultron too, cool. I have a 28 Ultron I still need to share too.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks, Matt.
How does the f1.4 version compare with the f1.2 version in terms of optical quality? Thanks
Completely different. The 1.2 is modern at f2 onwards and super sharp. The 1.4 gives a softer classic rendering.. See my 1.4 video for examples.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Many thanks.
I dont know if anyone else commented this, but those red dots in the sun star picture could be the sensor. There was a cinema camera that was released where the sensor would reflect back on to the rear lens element and then back on to the sensor and would make those little red dots that are reflections of the individual sensor resistors.
Thanks for that detail, yes someone else also educated me but it’s great to have it confirmed so thanks 👍🏻
Have you tried the 40mm F2 SL M42 Voigtlander, and if so how good is it??
It’s great, see my Voigtlander SL videos, search MrLeica Voigtlander for Nikon
Would I get the 40mm frame lines If I use it on a leica M5? If not I'll get the 35mm voigt
Hi no Leica M cameras don't have 40mm framelines.. you might find the 35mm more useful.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you.
Are there issues with the f1.2 minimum focus distance on the R3a?
Hi Tyler, yes. Set the lens to 0.7m (I think that's correct for the R3a, I forget), then "walk the lens in" to see focus and don't touch the lens. That's what I do.
My recent goal : save money and buy Voigtlander 65 mm f2 APO macro for Sony mount. After watching this video I’m left with dilemma.
Any suggestions?
Hi Adam, my suggestion is wait 1 week as you might have a third lens to consider ;) I’m not aware of the Sony Mount 60mm but the 40mm is excellent.

"Boring" ...........
Matt you made my day !
"Modern lenses tend to be clinical and boring"
"Vintage lenss tend to be full of character"
"Using a lens creatively"
Please, come over to The Netherlands to inform all the young
photo retailers, the professors and directors of the photo academies.
BORING & CLINICAL CHARACTER & CREATIVELY
I met three West End girls near Piccadillystreet Station in 1965,
had a FP3 in my rangefinder camera; developed the film in PROMICROL.
The girls were full of character and not being boring.
How do the girls look like now in 2022 ?
Should I invest in lenses instead of in girls?
Lenses Last Longer.

Haha thanks Jaco! :) I will be coming to the Netherlands to teach a workshop in April.
Hope they send you the 35mm .09
Is that for Fuji or M43?
Hi, does this lens work also with the Leica M5?
I’ve not tried the M5 / this combo sorry. I’m not sure. The lens is great on other cameras.
Has the voigtlander 35mm f1.2 nokton the same optical design and rendering? I prefer to have a more precise composition with my M
Hi
When you shoot in B&W do you shoot in colour then convert ?
Or shoot in camera B&W ?
Thanks
I shoot all/any digital cameras in B&W preview mode but record RAW. I need to visualise in B&W. I then just apply my MrLeica Camera X B&W preset to all images once imported to LR and that is most the work done.
Hey Matt, just a bit of an insight , are digital M (m10) typically reliable?
I don’t have the M10 but I’d say yes. They are the most popular Leica body by far (see my poll review!) :)
Can you get any voigtlander lens for leica r 4 camreas? Leica screw mounts?
Hello, I’m not sure actually but I don’t think so. If you want an SLR style setup get yourself a Nikon F body (see that video) and then Voigtlander F Mount lenses. I use those.

I love your reviews! You test a lot and I love your photographs. I would love to hear your opinion on the TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 for Leica M cameras.
Now I have the Zeiss Planar 2/50 ZM on my Leica M2. It‘s a fantastic lens. My only problem with it is that it is more like a 45-48mm and so the frame lines does not match the Lens.
Other than that I can really recommend it. but sometimes it drives me nuts 😁
Is the TTArtisan 50 1.4 maybe a good alternative?
Thanks! I’ve not tried the TTA lens but if I get one to test in the future I’ll be sure to share! More lens videos to come! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I‘m really looking forward to your next video👍
@@genefurio4329 I am late with next video so tonight if I have time! I will try!
This its great for the minolta cle?
For me no. I have the Minolta CL so I can relate. The rangefinder/ viewfinder is not magnified enough to focus a 1.2 lens. Look at the Minolta 40mm video I did maybe. Sorry if not the answer you wanted!
I have the 40mm 1.4. Can someone tell me if the 40mm 1.2 wide open has smoother bokeh than the 40mm 1.4 wide open?
Yes it should have easily, the 1.4 is not smooth, check sample images from both lenses on Flickr
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah, it appears that way. Just wanted to double check. There is a thread on dpreview and fredmiranda but no actual side by side wide open comparisons. Thanks for the feedback!
Great
