Damn it here I go again.... When I started shooting a trad bow it was really hard because I didn't know how to aim. But when use a compound bow is was pretty easy for me at least but I was using a Olympic style recurve bow for about a year and a half
Shooting traditionally opens a world of different types of aiming and techniques not found with compound shooting. Instinctive, gap, string walking, face walking, split vision, fixed crawl are a few as well as sight pins In Olympic style. I also think Jimmy Blackmons reference technique is cool for hunters.

Hi Rich, hope all is well. How's the archery thing going? I just read your post and I think if switching from right to left doesn't work the next best bet would be to just shoot instinctively. You can shoot a compound instinctively as well. Just get rid of all the peep and sight stuff, this way you can leave both of your eyes or the good eye open. Your brain will adjust from there. My daughter, for some reason, just could not shoot well with peeps and sights on her compound so I just removed them and she she started shooting well like she does with her traditional. The only down side is it takes years to be really good shooting instinctively

Great video Allie. Very informative. One day when I can put in the time I want to move to traditional at least a few years to try to harvest a whitetail with it.
I didn't watch the whole video. But in the beginning I saw you were shooting the recurve like a compound; absolutely vertical with a stabilizer on it. I shoot a trad bow at a 45° angle, and trad bows don't need stabilizers. Made me curious about your experiences. Anyhoo, thanks for the vid
you mean she is not canting the bow? Most trad & recurve shooters don't cant the bow and most places you go to learn as a beginner teach you not to cant the bow: it's considered a form fault as it makes it harder to be consistent. But of course, if it works for you, there is nothing wrong with it. And it looks good on camera, which is why it's often done in Hollywood films & TV shows.
And I don't really "aim" when I shoot. I've got a hunter friend (compound bow)that insists I must have a visual "landmark" or point of focus when I shoot, but I don't. I just focus on what I want to hit and I can do that the way I larned to shoot, canting the bow
@@wewatchmovies4446 You have just perfectly described "instinctive" shooting. You feel the shot rather than consciously methodically aim (like when you throw a ball or stone at something). It must be very satisfying to be able to shoot that way, but I can't do that - when I try to my aim gets a lot worse. Maybe with time and a lot more practice it's something that might develop, but maybe it won't and the bow will remain something I operate rather than something that is an extension of my body.
I think In the long run I’m going to want to have both . But even though it’s gunna be more difficult in some ways I think I’m gonna go with a traditional to start

"With traditional bow you need to be a much closer distance for hunting." Ma'am, have you ever seen Zulu tribes and other tribes how they use bows and how accurately they shoot. As i told myself, it tepends on the archer. I was trained with a longbow, being able to shoot that accurately. Once given a compound bow, the arrow almost hit me (the archer) And a Zulu wont be able to use a compound to save his life. The power of traditional bows are immaculate. Yes, Zulu people use poison tipped arrows for hunting, but point is, they hit their shots accurately from very far distances.

Question... which is better for shooting moving targets? all the videos that I watched for moving targets were done by a traditional bows... never saw one with a compound bow! is there a reason for that?
I shoot both, Compound and traditional mongolain Horsebow. The Compound normally (with sights and stuff, of couse), and the Horsebow instictively (that means jst looking at the target and then shooting in one fluid motion, no aiming). That's perfect for me, What i don't really like, even though i've started with that, is "olympic recurve bow". That's some kind of unholy middleground i don't like - i either want absolute peak, cutting edge technological advantages, or the traditional, raw experience. Recurve is neither of that.
i have a compound bow and i love it. i would also like to learn the way of a traditional bow but i am not sure if i should dose any one have some advice on if i should purchaser a tradition bow
because I am deformed/handicapped a fully adjustable compound bow is "best" for me. With my compound bow, I can get a full 62.3 pound draw at my draw length of 23 inches. With my 70 pound takedown recurve, I only get 47.32 pounds at my draw length. Admittedly, my arrow velocity with either sucks. Compound bow is 190 to 195 fps with a 460 grain arrow, according to the crono. I haven't used a crono shooting the recurve, but I know it is a bunch slower.
Have you ever tried recurve olympic style? I went from it to compound after 5 years practicing, in my opinion the olympic style is more complicated, distances are bigger. The compound for me is when you just need to have fun shooting.
@@OutdoorsAllie Try it if you have rhe opportunity. I am curious to see how a person who shoots only compound will deal with the clicker and the technique. Cool videos btw, subbed :)))
Hi, so I recently started getting into archery after going to my local range and I fell in love with it and I want to keep learning. I’ve been using the compound bow they provide, and my question is when should I consider buying my own bow (I am leaning more to buying a compound bow)
I feel like compound is mostly for only wanting to win medals for hitting the spider (the very center of the target) but honestly I really don’t want to do archery for winning medals. I got a expensive and powerful compound but I really wanna try recurve.
I just got into archery and I’m going to Learn on traditional bow and then I’ll go to a compound and then next year go deer hunting because I’ll be debt-free
I know this is a really old comment but Garmin actually makes some smart sights for compound bows that are really nuts. I shoot trad but my buddy has one and it almost feels like cheating.
I went to traditional archery because they are much more suited for me I have a 32 inch draw length. when I was out looking for a compound bow I could not find one that can draw up to 32 inches.
I want to get my 13-year old daughter into archery (she's plays around now with a cheap recurve bow built for kids), but I would like her to go the route of competition and get onto a college team eventually. Is a traditional bow or compound bow more appropriate if I want to go this route with her? Thanks in advance.
That's really tough to say. I think as long as she's practicing and having fun I wouldn't sway her one way or another yet. Maybe wait a couple more years before deciding. Thanks for watching Alan!
Crossbows blow compounders and trads into the water. I’ll bag tenfold the game than you guys in one season. I don’t care if you egoheads think it’s more skillful to use bows, you’ll be hungry much longer, and by that time I’ll have accomplished other things in my own time after easily filling my family’s bellies, while you guys are hiding in the bushes for 30 days, hoping a blind buck comes along for your 10 yard shot 😂😂😂😂
One thing needs to be mentioned is that Archers need to keep an open mind. Don't get locked in to one way of Archery. I have run into where there is many different Archers and styles of shooting and some are dead set to their one style and think everyone else is wrong. Some of the die fast Traditional shooters don't believe Compound bows should be allowed and than the Compound Archers think Traditional and Crossbow Archers should not be allowed. I myself believe each has their place and own one of each. Instead of fighting over this we need to be together for the big picture where the anti-hunters are there to shut all of down and Archery needs to work hand and hand with Gun Owners and Fishermen ( that includes women ). Like golfers are few and far between but own or have lots more property than us hunters have.
I was once a compound shooter. I got into it pretty hard. I was even making strings and cables. But I later found that traditional archery was much more enjoyable. Yes it's nice being able to hit the X every time and group arrows. But I got tired of the time it took to draw and get the pin on target as well as all the accessories you put on a compound. I just found lots of joy in the simplification and the added challenge that traditional archery offers.

Actually, one can pick up snowboarding with one on one instructions within two days and be able to go down most routes of the blue (easy) and red (middle) color by the end of the 3rd day. But while you can get down just fine, excellence takes time. Now, downhill skiing takes a bit longer (about 3 to 5 days, one on one instructions). It all depends on how flexible one is and what other sports have previously been practiced. Ice skating can make skiing easier as does skateboarding for snowboarding. Nordic skiing/Backcountry skiing is probably the easiest to pick up but pulling of telemark.. let's not go there. I started downhill skiing at 5, snowboarding at 14, and the last at 17. So I can reasonably say, that I'm capable of making an informed statement.

My daughter, for some reason, just could not shoot well with peeps and sights on her compound so I just removed them and she she started shooting well like she does with her traditional. The only down side is it takes years to be really good shooting instinctively
A long awaited! Thank you
You bet!
As a kid I shot a long bow but when my grandpa and cousins introduced me to a compound bow I was set
Ya, they are a lot of fun.
Hey I had tried using 45 pound string bow and It's could hit about 80 meters. Huhuhu
I have picked up a 30 year old compound bow and it shot like a dream a free sitting for years all it needed was a arrow rest
Happy to hear that!
OA, if you ever stop Utube videos I think you will definitely have a career as an Outdoors educator with a State Fish and Wildlife Department. You are very gifted in expression and explaining things.
Teaching and directing.
God Bless, get ready for those Thunder chickens! And always, STEELER NATION Baby!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Scott, ive always enjoyed teaching/instructing.
i started with a trad bow and got a compound after.
my trad bow is like an ar15 and my compound like a 50 cal long range rifle,i use them like that lol
Everytime i youtube a question about archery your videos pop up😆
Happy to hear that!
I think everybody should have a compound bow and a recurve they're both great
Me too!
Great video Allie. Very informative. One day when I can put in the time I want to move to traditional at least a few years to try to harvest a whitetail with it.
Me too! Thanks for watching!
@@zetacrucis681 well thanks for teaching me a new word. And yeah its just the way I learned to shoot in order to keep the arrow set with no notch.
@@zetacrucis681 I thought all trad bowists shot that way. Hence my initial comment. You're teaching me a whole bunch
I think In the long run I’m going to want to have both . But even though it’s gunna be more difficult in some ways I think I’m gonna go with a traditional to start
Both is better!!
Great video there is alot of info ! Imho i think everyone should learn traditional first cheaper easier on your body ! When you become decent and want to continue then start with a compound bow ! But as always Allie you have great info!
Thanks Chuck!
Love this video Allie, ton of great info and thank you for including the links😊
You're so welcome Paola!
what about the age of the bow>>I mean how long it stills good for shooting? Thank you and I hope that you will answer my question?
As long as you take care of it and change the strings and cables it will last a long time!
@@OutdoorsAllie thank you❤️
"With traditional bow you need to be a much closer distance for hunting."
Ma'am, have you ever seen Zulu tribes and other tribes how they use bows and how accurately they shoot. As i told myself, it tepends on the archer. I was trained with a longbow, being able to shoot that accurately. Once given a compound bow, the arrow almost hit me (the archer)
And a Zulu wont be able to use a compound to save his life. The power of traditional bows are immaculate. Yes, Zulu people use poison tipped arrows for hunting, but point is, they hit their shots accurately from very far distances.
Hey Allie, Dee in Darwin Australia here. I don’t have a pro shop or an archery shop here. I’ve learned a tonne from your channel. I’ll be getting my first bow in a week and I’ve never shot one and have no one to show me, would you mind doin a little something to help a girl out?
That's awesome. Yes I will continue to create this type of content! Thanks for watching Dee.
There are a lot of other great "how to" videos on RUclips as well if I can't get to the video in time. I hope you have so much fun learning!
Thanks Allie.
Just curious - why do you shoot off the shelf of your recurve instead of a rest?
A lot to consider in making a purchase.
Yes, for sure.
Helpful information, thank you for sharing !
Glad it was helpful!
A traditional bow is easier than snowboarding. Got it!. 🏂😜
Ok, random, but she is really pretty, I can definitely see her smile on the cover of some arrow company, nice smile, knowledge and down right gorgeous 🙊🤗
Good video. I'm curious, does a compound still demand annual maintenance even if it's not being used regularly?
Yes, to a certain extent. I would recommend checking the srings cables and limbs.
Question... which is better for shooting moving targets? all the videos that I watched for moving targets were done by a traditional bows... never saw one with a compound bow! is there a reason for that?
I've seen both. Not sure why, but traditional sounds more fun!
I shoot both, Compound and traditional mongolain Horsebow. The Compound normally (with sights and stuff, of couse), and the Horsebow instictively (that means jst looking at the target and then shooting in one fluid motion, no aiming).
That's perfect for me,
What i don't really like, even though i've started with that, is "olympic recurve bow". That's some kind of unholy middleground i don't like - i either want absolute peak, cutting edge technological advantages, or the traditional, raw experience. Recurve is neither of that.
I just bought Hoyt torrex I love it
Nice! Have fun with it!
I've rolled over from compound to trad. I have both longbows and recurves, but like my longbows better.
Fantastic video Allie. I really wish I was as articulate as you. 👍
Thanks a lot. That made my day!
i have a compound bow and i love it. i would also like to learn the way of a traditional bow but i am not sure if i should dose any one have some advice on if i should purchaser a tradition bow
If you love your compound you im sure you will love a traditional bow as well. They are a blast!
It seems a compound would be better for me overall, but something about the Recurve calls to me.
They sure are fun!
Explained very well Allie. Question how is your Reinhart target holding up? My compression foam box center is blown out,.....again!
It gets pretty ripped up with broad heads, but still indecent condition!
@@OutdoorsAllie Great another $150...🤪👍
because I am deformed/handicapped a fully adjustable compound bow is "best" for me.
I happy to hear you are still out there shooting Steve!
Trad in general you always have to be on your game. Otherwise you slip into bad habits.
Have you ever tried recurve olympic style? I went from it to compound after 5 years practicing, in my opinion the olympic style is more complicated, distances are bigger. The compound for me is when you just need to have fun shooting.
i haven't but that sounds awesome!
If you have the money do it now!! Why wait?
Buy both types
I feel like compound is mostly for only wanting to win medals for hitting the spider (the very center of the target) but honestly I really don’t want to do archery for winning medals. I got a expensive and powerful compound but I really wanna try recurve.
Recurve is a lot of fun! Im sure you'll love it!
I just got into archery and I’m going to Learn on traditional bow and then I’ll go to a compound and then next year go deer hunting because I’ll be debt-free
Sounds like a plan!
Can you put a Sniper Scope on a bow Or a High Zoom scope i never see Scopes on them before why?
I know this is a really old comment but Garmin actually makes some smart sights for compound bows that are really nuts. I shoot trad but my buddy has one and it almost feels like cheating.
I went to traditional archery because they are much more suited for me I have a 32 inch draw length. when I was out looking for a compound bow I could not find one that can draw up to 32 inches.
Dang, ya that is a long draw!
@@OutdoorsAllie Thanks. And thanks also for the great videos you put together.
Thanks for making a great video
Excellent video! Compound it is! How hard is it to transition from a Traditional Bow to a Compound Bow?
I wouldn't say hard, just different. You'll love it!
@@OutdoorsAllie thank you! Love your videos! 🤗
Trad life,💪🏹🏹🏹🏹😍
Crossbows blow compounders and trads into the water.
Yes, each has its own place. All are great!
Tomb Raider brought me here......after all those leveling up
That’s a cool helpful video! Nice!
Thanks Tommy!
Compound Bow is The Best Also Best For home Defense Arrow goes through Criminals sticks them to the wall
One is more Standard, and the other is more scientific.
I just bought a banshee compound bow which I've only yousd a traditional bow
Nice! That's awesome Emma!
I completely understand.
both are good. Ones just harder to learn,
True.
Is long bow and recurve bow considered as traditional bow?
Yes!
Dang, I prefer snowboarding over skiing but I’m interested in recurve more then compound lol
LOL
You're awesome, Allie:) Thanks so much for the video
Thanks for watching, have a great week!
Awesome video 👌 your videos are super interesting and the image quality is awesome; what camera and lighting setup do you use? Would be awesome if you could share that knowledge with us in a video or just in the comments. Thx 🙏🏻
Right now im using a Sony!
As a hungarian, I cry every time you say "traditional bow", and refer to a modern recurve bow. They are not the same thing, at all.
Your comparisons of easy or hard to learn and easy or hard to become excellent is now going to haunt me in all things going forward. :) LOL
I've heard Leubou makes "excellent" strudel.
hahahahahah
@@theamazinggoldfish8713 Indeed :) After school we'd come home and watch Hogan's Heros on TV - always a bunch of laughs.

Hey have you ever been to San Juan River at the base of Navajo Dam? You need to if you haven't yet ! One of the best fly fishing the trout awesome ! I'm from New Mexico that's why I'm asking? Thanks again and Be safe . o yeah I got my recurve bow and I'm doing the damn thing! Hahaha✌
Traditional bows r art
compound bows are easier to shoot well than learning to shoot a traditional bow well.
For sure.
I prefer a recurve
I have used both... I feel traditional now to be simpler and faster to operate.
True.
You should have made the snowboard thing into a graphic. I wish i could make it and post a pic comment
Thanks for watching tim!
I’m looking for a bow that remains accurate while diving from one roof to another 🤔
Get a crossbow.
