Blindness Tree
A beautiful tree called Blindness Tree is found in our country, which is unknown to many.
This rare tree is mainly native to the Indian subcontinent and China.
It has also spread to Africa, Madagascar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia.
This shrub grows up to about 1-2 meters long.
The scientific name of Blindness Tree is Excoecaria cochinchinensis.
The common English name for this tree is Blindness Tree.
It is derived from the Latin word excoecaria which means ‘to blind’.
People can go blind if this tree sap or latex gets into their eyes.
That’s how the tree got its name.
The flowers of Blindness Tree are small and red.
The beauty of the leaves beats the beauty of the flowers.
Leaves of this tree are green on the top and red on the bottom.
Trees having two colors of the same leaf are rare in nature.
This tree is locally known as 'Laila-Majnu', which is derived from Arabic folklore.
Laila-Majnu is regarded as a symbol of bonding or love.
The association of two colors on the same leaf of this tree reflects a deep connection.
This tree is named 'Laila-Majnu' due to this bond of two colors.
It is a plant of rare species.
This species of tree is now on the verge of extinction.
Despite being a South Asian native shrub, there isn’t much research on Blindness Tree.
It is used as an indoor plant for garden and interior decor, but it also has some medicinal benefits.
Its toxic sap has been used for a long time to cure itching and eczema.
It can be used as an anti-parasite against harmful germs and medicine against blood clotting.
Blindness trees can be found in a few areas in Dhaka including Baldha Garden and the Botanical Garden.
By cutting, grafting, air layering, and seed germinating, we can save this tree from extinction through plantation and nurturing it in different parts of the country.
