- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #548
Dates of Adventure: 5/22-5/23/21
One of my favorite campsites is at a place called Thelma & Louise Road, just outside Death Valley. Why is it called that?? Because it's on the edge of the Amargosa River Canyon -- and looks like a miniature version of Canylonds, where the movie was shot! My sis and hike down to the bottom of the canyon, and find ALL KINDS of interesting stuff! Old house, old car, a cave, a grave...and more!

wonder hussy, wonderhussie, wonder hussie, wonder hussey, wonderhussey
The lids nailed to the ceiling was to hold nuts and bolts, screws and nails. My granddad did the same thing. Awsome stuff Sarah. Sooo enjoy your adventures.
mystery solved!
👍🏼🍺
who's sara
James420: you are right but your description is lacking. The lids held the glass jars that held stuff
@@kc0lif .....Sara is 'Wonderhussy'
The truck in the video looks to be a 1925 Studebaker truck. Another great video.
Three months ago today we lost our twenty year old cat Big Boy….we were immediately adopted by a cat roaming the neighborhood who today became officially our cat by being neutered and named…..his name is Larry! Named for your friend Larry…..everyone who he has been introduced to is so amused by his name because I use your way of pronouncing LARRY…anyway he is doing great and we have fallen in love with him…..I swore I was through having a pet at my age because of the horrible Grief of losing our twenty year old cat…BUT Larry has changed all that…thank you Wonderhussy!!!!!
Thanks for encouraging me to find another after loss😢🤔😘
Best way to get over a loss of a pet is to adopt another, there are SO MANY who need caring for. Good for you.
Another awesome episode in the life of wonderhussy! RIP Frank...."stay"....."good boy!"
Oh wow, we start where Wonderhussy and sister meet Thelma and Louise! This is another first.
This is gotta be one of my new favorites, great job of showing this couch potato around that very diverse terrain
Thank you, and your sister, for taking us along for a journey to the banks of the Amagrosa River banks! It was nice to see the great desert scenery and being on the hike! The highlight was seeing you enjoy your palm-flavored shake at the end - cool reward for the hike! Looking forward to the next grand journey and adventure! Stay safe, awesome, adventures and cool! 🌅🤙🎇🧧
So glad your sis is with you. Makes you come across much happier and it makes me happy you have her with you. Anyway as always enjoyed it, thank you and sis.
When you are in the middle of nowhere it's good to come around the bend to a gift shop.
I'm glad to see people making good functional use out of desert area ( the date farm)... I REALLY hope people don't start getting ideas once the realize how much water can actually be found out there.. The Western deserts are really the " last frontier"so freaking beautiful and diversified.. TY Sarah for at least showing the world how beautiful it really is.. I'm REALLY glad alot of people would be too lazy and not tough enough to go some of the places you go.. Special spirits were watching out for that beautiful little oasis SO FREAKING PRETTY!!!❤❤
Was water until the governors sold our water rights to the Nestle company for the bottled water.
My puppers recognize the opening theme song and knew it was time for coffee and snuggles
That watershead isn’t the Amargosa river, although it does meet the Amargosa at Acme. The Noonsday mine is just to the east in the same general area of the war eagle mine. The original townsite was also called noonsday camp. Mining ceased in the 50s and abandoned on the 70s. Scrappers and vandals did the rest. The talc mine was owned by western talc and worked into the 80s, I was told. The shaft that you were looking in was one of the more stable shafts in the area and had good timbered collars until some nitwit poured diesel fuel into it a burned out the collars. Interesting area I’ve visited many times. Didn’t know about the T&L connection though.
Your channel name is dieselfreek any connection? Jk. Thought it was ironic. Interesting nuggets of info you added. Thanks
I do enjoy how much space you give Sis. It's kinda love. If you give her space, she'll come. If you don't give her space she'll threaten not to come. But she's your dam Sister and you 'll still get together...
If you don't go......you'll never know. Words to live by.
It was a mine town site everybody worked at the mine
“If ya don’t go, you’ll never, ever know.” Ain’t that the truth. Love ya crazy awesome adventures mate. Stay safe in ya happy place.👍🇦🇺❤️🤪😁🥳🤩
RIP Frank.
Yeah that was ruff ruff
Your welcome
I'll see my self out
Yes the electrical things are knobs of the old knob and tube wiring method.
Sarah! I'm jealous, you and your sister are having to much fun. Happy trails! 😎🚶♀️👍
Oh yay!!!! It's Wonder Wednesday Hussy!!! I'm sooooooo happy now! Well, Telma? Lol. Thanks Wonderhussy! For awesome, incredible, adventure through that valley. Ruins, and the date farm. I honestly feel like I was hiking right along with you and sis. Whew I need a nap now! Lol. Loved it!
I love how you and your sister have "sister" rigs!!!
Small screws, nuts, and bolts were put in Mason Jars and when they screwed the jar onto the lid hanging from the ceiling it made for convenient storage.
AND EASY identification!
First time that beds’ been laid in YEARS!
Hey Beavis, he said "laid"... huhuhuhuhuhuhuhu
Those plants with the "squash" like fruit is called "Coyote Melon". They're fairly common in desert and semi-desert areas. They are not edible. CHEERS!
Natives or exotics?
@@archstanton_live They are native.
We gave a similar vine in Australia, we call ours 'Pademelon', they are toxic, so they spread pretty well because nothing eats them.
Good video! It’s almost midnite here with me so I’ll say goodnight.
I am off roader, and I have to say 95% of us probably pack out more then we pack in. I have a feel you are seeing a lot of stuff in a pile is when it floods. Things up stream go down stream. That looks like an O2 bottle. I do carry one in my medic bag, but highly doubt anyone would leave one behind on purpose.
Or the vicious winds.
The big mountain north east of that mine if you start exploring it you’ll find big mines with tools and ore charts inside
Graffiti Détente ! and then I cant wait to get into that CRACK and remove the stuck balloon lol
That looked like a lot of fun. I love exploring but unable to do so. You bring the fun to us. Thank you.
A cowl air vent. Auto is from 30s-40s, probably.
The wood pieces made it look more like a truck...
"Oh! I can't wait to crawl into that crack!!!" AMAZING video!!
Thanks Sarah. I've always wondered what was down that way from the date farm.
At 9.45 Wonderhussy starts marching on her hike with key STILL in hand! Me: freaking out "SAFEGUARD THAT KEY"!! ...yes put key deep in pack hooked to a loop so it can't fall out either. WHY? .....Ever look for a key in the desert? ☘☘☘
P.s FUNNY KEY STORY: i was hiking from Humber Park (idyllwild) up Devil's Slide into the San Jacinto wilderness. At the Saddle Junction (the top of Devil's Slide where all the trails veer off in different directions) I had paused & got a chattn' with a fellow hiker. He said he was on a retreat in Idyllwild and drinking in the peace n quiet. It transpired he had a church in Lakeside California (San Diego). After some sustenance I was on my way and MUCH later that day was very surprised to meet up with him in that exact same area. He was looking for his motorbike key and had to hike Devil's Slide back up a second time. Nobody wants to hike Devil's Slide twice in one day that's for sure. It was the end of a long day and I was very happy and impatiently descending Devil's Slide to meet at the car in which I carpooled (they were doing another hike). After about an hour I got to the car, and in anticipation of getting there before them had lefy myself some cold water and snacks hidden under the car. It had been hot, so to my relief i saw they also left me the car key. But I quickly changed my mind since there's no way in heck the owner of that fancy SUV would leave me his key. As I tried to make sense of the key I saw a motorbike parked right next to our vehicle. It was like trying to put a puzzle together. The key looked different and zi realized it probably is a motorbike key. There's a motorbike right there, and I met a guy who lost a motorbike key!
But WHY was HIS KEY, UNder OUR CAR... tidily placed onto my things. All I coukd think was that he dropped his key or left it in his bike. Someone saw it. Thought that maybe we are all together. (It is not uncommon for meetup groups to meet and hike together from Humber Park. Altho it was a leap. The person was probably petrified to leave the key on the bike letting anyone just drive off with it. I was THRILLED for the BIKE OWNER that I found his key, but sadly I had not an inch of strength left to hike up Devil's Slide to go tell him.
I had no choice but full knowing how tormented he must be, to just wait. Well his face when I told him where I found his key, it was just as perplexed as I was. But we were WAY TOO EXHAUSTED to discuss it even.
Morning sunshine, your VLOGS always bring a smile to my face
Good video/documentary on the opera house & lady who ran it from local libraries...
I see the Mason Jar lid question was already answered so the two glass pieces hanging down were insulators to keep the electrical wires from touching each other and off the surface of the mine so as not to energize any metal in the area. The wires would have been attached about half way up the pieces.
Cars in the 20's had wood frames !!! I love your videos Wanderhussey you go where I grew up !!! Sespe and the Los Padres National Forest !!! I grew up in Cuyama Valley and my parents lived on the farm for 50 years !!! I especially like your lost coast video !!! Been there and was in awe !!!
I live vicariously, through you; Homeslice🙃😉
"We'll be drinking margaritas by the sea Mamacita..." my favorite movie quote 😎🍹💙
Good times w/Wonder Hussy!
Watching the video now. Very glad you have your sister with you. We feel better about your safety. Interesting things to see in the desert. Keep up the great adventures. Be safe. Thank you.
Wonderhussy at her best. Beautiful scenery. History and adventure. Environmental info and clean-up (grrr Mylar balloons grrr) And you finish with a sweet treat. Stay safe ladies. 👭😎
Niss Nissen just an awesome job well done
Always enjoy the short history of your adventures.,along with adding some humor to your blogs. Keep trecking!!🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️🙋♂️
Just so close to the Wonderhussy and sis compound. Great place to wander amist the otherwise hot and dry barren desert.
Yessss always an amazing day when a new video is posted from WonderHussy !!!
The tops of the jars used to have glass and they keep nuts and bolts screwed in there
Yay another fabulous adventure!
Awesome video! I have some pretty cool memories from that camp site. That Gord is a Coyote Melon 😉
Thanks Diane. I was curious about that.
@@kenycharles8600 you are welcome! Hope you are doing well!
Are they safe to Eat? Plus is all that bubbling water safe to drink?
@@mitch5077 found this on Google. The flowers are similar to those of pumpkins, squashes and other members of the cucumber family, but the foul odor and extremely bitter taste of the coyote melon makes it inedible to humans. ... Some say that since the flesh of the melon is sweet and the center toxic, that the fruit is tricky, like a coyote.
As far as the water goes, I wouldn't drink any water out in nature without treating it
@@OutandAboutWithDiane Thank You for the info. Some poor sap like me would probably eat one, need a drink of water and then die🤣 again Thanks! ❤️🤟😎
Your "Bombers", sound lie a small Tennessee Horse fly. 40 years ago, I got bit by one, at work. I didn't even know it was there, until it felt like I'd been stabbed, in the chest. By the time I got my shirt unbuttoned, I had blood running down my chest. I grabbed the first aid kit and some alcohol swabs, and got the blood stopped. I had a hole in my hide, that looked like it was made by a tiny ice cream scoop. I looked at my shirt and had a matching, 1/16" hole, in my effing shirt. I bandaged my wound, and then, I spotted him. This bastard was almost solid black and half the size of a humming bird. I was in a enclosed tool room. I grabbed a broom, chased it around for 10 minutes, and settled his hash.
LOL Sounds like the horseflies we have in Montana! They always take a chunk out and leave you bleeding! I like your description of the story! Thanks!
Yay!!! We got to see your sister..I hope we get to see her often 😇🥰🤠PS.. I'm with the locals..peace and quiet..Yum haven't had a date shake in a hot minute..Thank you for your interesting explores🤗💕
The round "melons" are called a Coyote Gord and are not edible but the natives did used to eat the seeds off the ground. Once the gord was dried it was use as rattels.
If I were camping on that cliff the main thing I'd be worrying and 'wondering' about is - did I set the parking brake and chuck the wheels on my camper?
Golly yes, Def parking sloping AWAY from the precipice.
This Driver has a wheel chock in the pick up bed ...
😋😃
Park sideways. Lol set the parking Brake. Yes chocks on the wheels. Cottonwood trees grow big near huge source of water. Cottonwood trees are beautiful. But needs lots of water.
Why did the blm - Beaure of land management taking their land away? Not nice. Blm takes away allot of stuff from people.
You Are a rare woman. So much to see in nature, but most women don't want to explore. Love your enthusiasm and sense of wonder!
Good Morning
You are a Mitch M as well. Only few of us remain. I'm MMM
People sometimes nail jar lids to the ceiling or the underside of a cabinet so they can store things in jars without shelves. You screw the jar onto the lid from the bottom and it hangs there. You can pick out what you need without having to dig around on shelves. The round screen looked like a splatter screen like you put over a frying pan so grease doesn't splatter. That one was kind of big and might have been to contain sparks in a fire ring or barrel used to burn garbage. I think the car was a Model T or Model A pickup with a wooden bed. The "vent" was on the back. The body had been flipped forward and was upside down. Model Ts came packed in wooden crates and the crates were used for the dash board and other parts of the car, so they were part wood.
Greetings from Oregon sis 😘you find the best coolest places that is one of the reasons you're channel is freaking awesome plus you are a great host and you're such a cutie keep them coming 😊
Walked from the Smith Talc road to China Ranch for a Date Shake in 2015. 3 spots were clogged with thorny brush. One spot we hugged the right side cliff scree slope, one we crawled on our bellies. The well that you seek is straight down from your rigs. There you will find his pump.
My grandfather did the same thing with Mason jar lids ceilings and walls mason jars filled with things he felt he needed
Love you wonderhussy you are a patriot
The "Sisters" song by Rosemary Clooney just came to mind... Fun to watch, thanks!
with Vera-Ellen.
The wild melons look the same as what I remember growing in outback Queensland Downunder when I was a kid out there,we called them paddy melons, some old timers made jam from them cheers old Al
Cool video beautiful country and enjoying watching now awesome video Wonderhussy 😊👍😎👌❤️
"Well got your happy back and that far out tan!"
The vehicle looks like one of those rare muffler bearing cars I think it's from the early 1900s and it looks like it was converted for the mining operation 🤗🇺🇸 Cjd wash state 🤗
6:24, OOHHYIKES I love to hear you say that....LOL
The miners used to dig a 30 or 50 ft tunnel to store Dynamite where it is cool
Great video Sara .. I have that area in my sights for when it's cooler .. I want to do the talc mines and now I have other stuff to look at thanks to you!
Very cool vid I love hiking through China ranch date farm and always loved the date shakes, cookies and the bread all really good
thank you again Sarah 👍👍
The lids on the ceiling are fastened (screwed, nailed, ...) in. Small items are sorted into different glass jars. The the jars are screwed into the lids. My grandfather used this technique for screws, washers, nails, ...
Love that China Ranch Date Farm!!
Very cool!! Love date shakes!
ya, it cheeses me off too that mining sites were just abandoned. I have seen a lot of instances where old mining sites were reclaimed & turned into nice recreational opportunities. In Florida old phosphite pits have been turned into bass fishing resorts.
The lids on the ceiling are to make easy to find nuts and bolts in mason jars. An old do it yourself trick.
That date farm is definitely on my list of things to see! The date shake looks so good on a hot day!
I love you Wonderhussy! Your so awesome 👍😎
Detritus is my new word, using it in a sentence tomorrow at work, detritus. I bet there’s a hot spring at the end of that trail!!
Whever you go, there you are"!! Thanks Wonder Girl.👍👍✌️🤗😎
Wow! Fun hike! Thanks!
Did you run across The Armargosa opera house ? My wife and I came across this on our way to California from Las Vegas . What a place . Woman was still there and would put on a show on certain nights .
IF I'm not mistaken, Wonderhussy did a video regarding the Amargosa Opera H0use back a couple years. Also, a Lass named Jenni (Jenni Gives RUclips channel) has a
video or two about the place.
@ACME INC....great info THANKS
She did touch on the subject of opera house in a prior episode, yes!
That was fun! Thanks Wonderhussy. Have a great day
Pretty cool that you were able to squeal your tires on that dirt road 😀
Grew up in OC Cal. I am trying to move home and the desert calls. I love your videos, but boy howdy it makes me homesick.
I’ve watched almost all of your videos but never seen a camping video of Palm Springs or surrounding areas. That I recall… Would love to see your favorite Palm Springs site to visit or camp area.. Thanks Wonderhussy for all your entertainment and knowledge.. 😉😊
Truly living (camping) on the edge. Be careful ladies.
That vent is for cool air it’s on the cowling it’s definitely a teens or 20s car
Some 1950s Studebakers had 2..."gills" in the fenders right behind the front wheels.(8-)
Jibson weed OH YEAH !!! Made a tea with some friends with the roots and I will tell you WOW be very careful we weren't !!!!
Great video Sarah!!
I love your attitude that you portray on your channel. You have a optimistic outlook that I find contagious. Thank you for that!
Another beautiful trip with WH always makes my day when i see your video on line i hope that your staying safe from the heat wave i see on UKs world news please take care both of you
Good movie, hi beautiful, good report, stay safe ❤❤❤❤
That was exciting I really enjoyed watching this one thank you from the old retired guy👍😎👍
Gotta check it out!!!! Thanks Hussy👍🏼
I remember the movie of Thelma & Louise. I also remember they were chased by the police and drove down the road and ended up driving off the cliff into the canyon.
I believe the yellow, gourd like vine is a "coyote melon." We have a close relative in dry, SE Colorado. Ours have more of a succulent leaf but "melons" exactly the same. Great adventure, and I want a date shake.
Thx Huss!
13:55 called "Knob and tube" wiring. Those are porcelain contact points for 'cloth' wire. Used from 1880s-1930s
Fun video. Unfortunately, you were not in the Amargosa Canyon, although it is near. You were hiking along Willow Creek, and I think that part of the Canyon is named for the creek. Willow Creek joins the Amargosa farther along past the ranch. The Western Talc Mine was closed when asbestos was found in the talc.
That’s how the 4Runner bumper really got bent!
Glad to see proper footwear (boots) were used and flip-flops left behind! Be Adventurous AND be Safe!
😂✌️🥰🏜️
the lids on the ceiling were where you screwed mason jars / jelly jars onto them. you then put nuts and bolts, etc. in them to keep them safe
Sarah as always you did an excellent job ❤️👍
