I never get so emotional listening to any other artists’ work. There’s just something special and pure in what Ólafur creates that touches even the darkest parts of our souls. Ólafur’s music has helped me a lot in dealing with depression and I can’t find words to express how grateful I am to him for letting us hear the purest form of music. One day I’ll get better but this piece of art will still hold a special place in my heart. Keep up the good work!

Да. Красиво. А название то какое...nyepi или day of silence...День тишины. У каждого свои мечты и грёзы на эту тему. Кто-то может мечтать об одном дне полном тишины и спокойствия и это в наше то динамичное и безудержное время бесконечного контента, а я в своих мечтах представлю себе день тишины, как политическое событие, после которого Многонациональный Народ моей страны проснётся и наконец-то мысленно освободится от идеологической оккупации клептократическим режимом и устремится к Свободе, взяв в свои собственные руки свою жизнь и судьбу, похоронив тиранию криминала и ненасытного олигархата с помощью бессрочного протеста и ненасильственного сопротивления. your music makes me cry every time. it seems to open the door to a completely different world, a brighter one, where you can be yourself, makes you throw out all your emotions, and despite this, it seems to give hope for the best. I'm an Indonesian,
tho I am a Muslim. We are familiar with Nyepi because Nyepi is one of the national days (Day of Silence).
To think about it, after hearing so many times about the song.
The ambiance indeed represents what's Nyepi like (and some of the notes also).
I do really appreciate how brother Olafur could show them single-handedly just using a piano.

Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2019, it falls on March 7). It is a Hindu celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese.
Wow. I'm listening to this for the first time... in Canggu, Bali. Thank you for the insight. I would have never known. I'm leaving Bali before the 2020 nyepi (March 25-26th) by just a couple weeks. I love Olafur and the Balinese culture. Happenings like this feel beyond coincidence!

Yes indeed... I produced a CD called Nyepi about 16 years ago... I will be re-releasing it in 2022. This day of Silence is special and important. Respect to the Balinese culture for preserviing this human perspective and appreciation.

I always, always say that
It's all marketing. They have created this image of Iceland (shy musicians dressing cozy pull overs and playing cozy songs, ecology, social concern, etc) which is almost like a commercial label. They all do the same, though only two or three are actually good. The true is that Iceland is the most xenophobic country in the world, terribly harsh social atmosphere, and trust me... you just want to be there some few days to see some landscapes and then leaving.

I cry every time I listen to this piece. It reminds us of the beauty of silence and how we need it in this loud world.
It is beautifully ironic that I first listened to this song at the beginning of this year from one of his live shows. The introduction he gives about how this is a Balinese celebration of 'silent day' to give Mother Earth a break from humanity - that really spoke to me and I thought, wouldn't it be amazing to have that be a global celebration. A couple months later we are in a pandemic doing basically that in many ways. It is unfortunate that the circumstances involve a lot of human suffering, but the rapid healing of the Earth helps me find peace and calm in these trying times. And this song has been my soundtrack through it all.
As long as there is music like this, there is hope.

I love Olafur's music. This touch my soul, very deeply. It is like he will write music about my emotions. And I always think that we have this connection, even we do not know each other, thanks this music. And the words in music are not necessary as we can hear base on this case. I think his music is one special in world. When I hear this the feelings that were during my trip on Lofoten in Norway, when I felt so good and like in a dream.

Is this "nyepi" from Bali?
Yes he was inspired to create this piece based on the Balinese tradition of Nyepi. For those who aren't familiar with Nyepi, it is a day spent in silence, fasting and meditating on the purification of humanity, earth, and the universe.
Before he performed this piece he shared a story about how it was composed too. Olafur was on an Indonesian island this day and experienced how much of the everyday life was shut down on that day. He was amazed by the silence and sadness and decided to compose a sad song fitting to this atmosphere.

I've been a great admirer of your work since eulogy for evolution and especially enjoyed re:member. Yet I never gave that much credit to nyepi. I think it's because I've never linked it to something or just wasn't in the right mood when listening to it.
Some weeks ago I sadly had to say farewell and goodbye to my beloved dog. I've found that this song really helped me deal with all my emotions and grieve as I've discovered all the beautiful variants of this song. This live version of the classic piano interpretation, the string quartet version and of course the choir version. Now this song will forever be linked with the great times and joy I've had with my friend and will always be there to help me re:member.
