It's a brilliant scene. What it shows is how a demoralized people who were looking for a future are captivated by a movement that would result in more destruction. The old fellow, who I suspect is a WWI vet, gives the foreshadowing of things to come.

To me the most chilling and disturbing, almost sinister song from the whole excellent movie..The use of this song in this setting, to show the rise in popularity of Nazism in 1930's Germany, is truly brilliant...!
Whoever composed this song did their history homework. You don't have to be an elderly former Hitler youth to know this captures the spirit of what fired up millions of Germans enough to start a second world war.

It makes sense because Nazi Germany was a dark time that gave birth to modern Europe. And there was definitely something both womb-like and tomb-like to the Nazi vision for the future, which was simultaneously an attempt by countless Germans to reclaim the idealized past of the monarchy (note the similarities to Putin's reasons for invading Ukraine). If you have a serious interest in the 1920s and 30s in Berlin then read "Before The Deluge" by Otto Friedrich. Even better is "Rites Of Spring" by Modris Eksteins.
Joel Grey's autobiography is full of interesting info about the making of Caberet. I recommend it. Comments about "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" the old man is true according to Grey's autobiography. Chilling.
Underrated elements well captured by this scene and song- The Nazis as also a cult of youth and a cult of beauty- things with ancient roots at least as far back as Greece, and with appeal even today. I do not object, knowing the virtues as well as the vices of such a value set. But I think of it every time the Olympic anthem and creed are heard, every time someone proclaims the children are our future, every time some angry kid hectors the world about something. The question will always be, whose children, whose future, what future. The Nazis as a cult of nature. Sure, they were also a cult of the machine and industrial modernity. Consider them, among other things, forerunners of the modern cult of "post-technological' future that has been all over SF the last 25 years. The Nazis as utopian dreamers. Objectively, this is the nicest song in the movie. Every other song is about either sex or materialism. The Nazis were evil, but they didn’t seem evil. I think it’s also interesting showing the different emotional reactions people in the park have to the song. Different people joined the Nazis for different reason.

Leí sobre el viejo de lentes, durante la grabación no se quizo levantar, por que dijo que el había sufrido por el nazismo y el director lo entendió y le dijo que no había problema y grabó todas sus reacciones.
El que sube el vídeo pone el mensaje del final como quien paga un impuesto. Si realmente fuera esa la motivación para colgar esta escena de la película, no habría eliminado el diálogo entre los dos hombres cuando suben al coche. Por no hablar de que se trata de un mensaje ambiguo, pues el pasado que se representa en la escena es todavía el de una Alemania humillada por las potencias vencedoras de la Gran Guerra; de ahí la reacción de los clientes al canto de esperanza.

Objectively, this is the nicest song in the movie. Every other song is about either sex or materialism. The Nazis were evil, but they didn’t seem evil. I think it’s also interesting showing the different emotional reactions people in the park have to the song. Different people joined the Nazis for different reason.

Leí sobre el viejo de lentes, durante la grabación no se quizo levantar, por que dijo que el había sufrido por el nazismo y el director lo entendió y le dijo que no había problema y grabó todas sus reacciones.
El que sube el vídeo pone el mensaje del final como quien paga un impuesto. Si realmente fuera esa la motivación para colgar esta escena de la película, no habría eliminado el diálogo entre los dos hombres cuando suben al coche. Por no hablar de que se trata de un mensaje ambiguo, pues el pasado que se representa en la escena es todavía el de una Alemania humillada por las potencias vencedoras de la Gran Guerra; de ahí la reacción de los clientes al canto de esperanza.
