  • A video-diary of a journey on one of the longest stretches of rail road in the world, running from Moscow in Russia to Beijing in China. From the sometimes horrible conditions on the trains, to the most scenic mountains and the scorching deserts this video brings you the best of the trip - in 16 minutes. Best when viewed in HD.
    Filmed in HD (1080i) on Sony equipment during the summer of 2008. Uploaded here as 720p.

    I remember those Russian trains well. In 2005 I travelled the whole Trans-Siberian from Vladivostok to Moscow with a few days stop in Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. I found the part from Vladivostok to Irkutsk the most beautiful which mostly you don't see if you take the Mongolian route. It's longer too, over 8,000km

    The whole stretch is served every 2nd day or so but there are several trains (day and night) a day running parts of it. e.g. Moscow - Irkutsk. That allows you to break as often as you like, though you need then a ticket for every ride. Like this you can arrange to stay every other day in a hotel/city to have a decent shower apart from deciding where you want to stay how long. There are not really remote towns in Russia where train stops while there are almost no towns in Mongolia...

    Very well done! What kind of camera were you using. The sound was very good and also your adding a sound track to this, very nice. Can you stay in any town along the way? Is it expensive buying food and staying in a hotel in the remote towns along the railway? How much did your train ticket cost? It sounded like the air in the train was not good. Can you open the window in your car? I would like to hike and maybe camp too along the way. Are there many restrictions etc. Thanks!

      We ordered our trip through a travel agency in Denmark (Penguin Travel) and paid a premium - I’m sure that if one took the time ordering directly from local vendors there would be a lot saved economically. During the trip we really enjoyed the stops we had, so plan a few of those (we had a few overnight stops were we changed trains in Irkutsk and Ulaanbatar).
      Brings lots of biscuits and food ;-)

    hello friends, actually me too planning to travel by this train. But I want to get down from the train at several locations to visit some where. here is it possible? and if it so what is the frequency of this train in a week. Up/Down.
    Next is how to obtain visa, for an uninterrupted journey. I'm Sri Lankan and at present in Saudi Arabia, So is it possible to catch the train some where after Moscow.(Coz , I'm planning to come from Ankara to north by another train via Georgia)
    Thank You Very Much and expecting your kindness.

    • @inukjorgensen
      @inukjorgensen  5 лет назад +1

      Hi. Visas took a while to get, but we basically contacted the embassies of the different countries and they were very helpful. Back in 2008 the trains were quite frequent, at least a few times a week even in the most remote places. Make sure you get tickets before hand though so you are sure to get on. The trains have different numbers, but the stretch between Moscow/Ulan Ude they all go in the same direction and stop at the same places so it should not matter if you pick different trains (but you’ll have to check as I’m not sure).

      Unfortunately, filmning/photography was not allowed at the border. In fact Russian customs wanted to see my camera several times during that evening. I have no idea what they were checking, but they none the less went away with it (along with our passports) for an hour or two. It came back intact.

    • @inukjorgensen

      We had our tickets/cabins booked in advance so we did not have the luxury of missing our scheduled departures. But, I'm sure you can and jump on the next train (but during summer these trains are pretty full so I'm not sure it will work). The crew were not that serviceminded so we never explored the possibility.

    How do you get permits from all three countries? Did you need visa for each of them or need some special permission?

    • @inukjorgensen
      @inukjorgensen  7 лет назад +4

      You have to have VISAs for all three countries - at least if you are European. The only currency you are allowed to bring into Mongolia were US dollars, and we did not encounter a single ATM or a place that accepted our major creditcards. This was back in 2008 so maybe they have laxed the rules a little. Back then they checked how much cash we brought into the country, and how much we had when we left... ;-)
