@breme That is something I've definitely appreciated about Tool. I've always had a gripe with bands that are only named after the singer, or the singer is the only one anyone knows the name of while the rest of the band is easily replaceable.
I went to a tool show late Jan 2020 I figured Pneuma would be the best drumming part, the crowd would react but I was wrong. I was blown away by the end of 46&2. Soon as Danny finished the song he stood up with his chin on his chest with his hair draping over his face and breathing real hard and it was incredible. The whole stadium cheered for about 2 minutes straight. 46&2 is amazing live. The band has perfected the light show with the song over 25 years and it’s an unique experience compared to the rest. Without a doubt Danny moves his arms around more during the end of that song than compared to any other song. Embraces the Octopus. There was a intermission after this song then played 2 more songs plus chocolate chip trip which is soooo much better live. It’s a whole different sound and beat he’s playing over and he overlaps it at periods and it’s amazing. I hope to see them again.
A lot of people mentioned the complex polyrhythms, especially during the bridge where he’s playing 4 different rhythms at the same time across the entire kit, as the most impressive part. And they’re right, of course. But to add to that, another thing that makes Danny special as a drummer is his mastery of “dynamics”. You recognized it in part by calling out the softer moments, especially at the end of the song, but Danny does that throughout. He controls the power with which he uses on the drums and cymbals to create musical texture in a way that is unmatched in modern rock music. He transitions from powerful whipping hits to gentle taps with ease, sometimes within the same triplet or double stroke roll. He has incredible control. It’s easy to shift from a loud part to a soft part and back. It’s hard to do that smoothly, or within a drumfill, and it’s damn near impossible to do it with one hand while the other stays the same or shifts in the opposite direction. Danny is the G.O.A.T.
Dude, excellent analysis! I have never heard a better drummer, at least in modern rock music, being 1960s and up. But he's probably just the best drummer in terms of pure mastery and skill, in fact anything, in general. At least for musicians with mass exposure.
He is truly a musician. A lot of subtle stuff that can easily go unnoticed. How he will go from using two toms, to three toms, to 4 and 5 and then back down from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2....just so amazing.
Perfect analysis Erik, but you left out the fact that apart from his incredible talent he is one of the most humble and down to earth guys in the industry.
When he's playing rim shots on the snare with his left stick is where you can really notice the amount of consistent control he has regarding dynamics.
Also, Danny keeps himself in tremendous shape too. He has great posture behind the kit, especially for someone who is 6'5". He is my favorite percussionist of all time for sure.
But when you see how massive his kit is and he instinctively knows where each piece is without looking and his precision is unmatched. You can hear the similarities between studio album & live.
@@StefBelgium I've always felt the very first drum roll on his midi pads goes wrong on the last note. And then after the main breakdown there is another fill that doesn't sound as quick as it should, but hell, the other 99% of the track is insane 😳
Danny Carey is one of the, if not the best, drummer that I have listened to in my 40 years on Earth. I am a drummer in a garage band and we just sit around, pull songs out of the air, and jam to. None of us are musicians per se, we just all love music and to play it. I have been a Tool and Danny Carey fan since about 1997. His polyrhythms and time signature changes make him one of the most difficult drummers to cover, which is a cool thing. As much as I feel like I can keep a decent groove, I can't mimic DC. But I will ALWAYS be impressed with his fills, time signature changes (as a band as a whole), and his sound samples that he plays. So many good Tool songs to plug, but from a Danny standpoint, Pneuma, H., Schism, and Eulogy are some of my all time favorites to listen to from a drumming/percussion standpoint.
That part is so impressive because he’s playing at least 3 different time signatures at the same time. He’s the greatest drummer in the world right now.
I actually believe it's 4... it make my brain hurt trying to sort it... but I think each limb is actually playing a completely independent rhythm in a completely separate time signatures... he's literally synchopating with himself.
I've always liked Tool, but I wasn't always as into them as I am now. Mostly this piece for drums really made me realize that Carey isn't just "Good", he's like savant good. It's one thing to play accurately at high BPM with difficult fills. It's another entirely to play in awkward time signatures, while doing polyrhythym and still making it sound near-identical to the album performance. I notice that for many who doubt when Carey is mentioned among the greats, it is often times people who can't appreciate the technical skill behind what he's doing, their perspective is just "Drums go brr, but I know lots of drummers".
I’m an old dude, grew up listening and playing Yes, ELP, Genesis etc. I’m very used to weird time signatures, tempo changes etc…..I believe you are correct, Danny is the best drummer living, maybe ever been.
He definitely has the most difficult job in the group when they play live. He has to be consistent or they wouldn't work. been lucky enough to see them three times across 20 years and he's an absolute machine.
@@oswaldgutenberg2985 Only had the chance to see them once (10,000 Days tour), but he was metronome perfect the whole show.......that dude is a machine!
It's hard to even mention Tool without sounding like a fanatic. I am in no way a believer in organized religion, but when I was first introduced to their album Lateralus in my headphones during a mushroom session, there was no doubt in my mind that there was some higher intelligence involved channeling through these guys, communicating directly with my soul, lifted me up like a child and cleansed it from accumulated shit and turned me in to a whole new person! Thank you Tool for saving my life and to all who help their music reach out to even more souls!
The thing with Carey having such longevity is his technical ability.... He doesn't have to rely on raw speed, because he's able to do enough at once to make up for it
The amazing thing is how inventive he has stayed. It's one thing to play a hit you had 30 years ago. It's another thing to create a new masterpiece 30 years later.
To me the most impressive thing about his playing is that you see him playing and all the sudden a human feels more dependable than a machine. Authority, fluidity, and precission...the what and the how are one. I think this guy and Carter Beauford are my favorites ATM.
Just read your reply….absolutely right on the money. Danny and Carter are the best right now. I’ve seen TOOL 6 times over the years and Dave Matthews Band over 40 times. It all starts with the drummers. Peace
The power of Bonham, the dexterity of Peart. I’m not big on “best of” lists, but he’s right there, without question. He’ll inspire drummers for generations.
@@habibie Mangini needs to take notes on how to "have soul while playing". Portnoy and Carrey can run miles around him with just the energy they bring, whilst also still being technical to a point.
Been thinking that exact term to myself every time I watch a clip of him doing his thing....not of this world type of display..the whole band is a once in a generation ..cosmic .. divine even ... meeting of minds and souls.
You pronounced Pneuma correct. It means “of spirit.” Tool has actually been around since late 1980s became big in 1991. They’re evolving & still going strong. Amazing band must see live after covid ends. They were coming to Miami AAArena in April but everything shut down.saw them at Coachella but wanted to see them at smaller Arena show.., this guy is one the best drummers out there. Notice how he goes on par w singer
My first experience was at 17 front row undertow tour and the flaming lips opened I’ll never get tired of listening to TOOL daily. Being in front of Maynard singing Sober and Prison Sex was amazing and Crawl Away was just everything.
What is most impressive you asked, the fact he plays 4 different time signatures at the same time 🤯🤯 and they aren’t the same time signatures the band is playing 😎 this is elite, 🐐 level. 🐙🐙
I got my first tattoo when I was 15 cuz I seen this man sitting meditating on it. The right eye of Horus. Danny's deep af too, his 33 jersey isn't just a nod to Larry. Very esoteric individual. Sacred geometry plays a big part in his life and skills
I have played drums for 41 years. A lot professional. He has just impeccable timing and true creativity when it comes to the craft. The thing about drumming is it’s a long road to get to that level. Just like any other thing. That feeling on stage is awesome, I miss it. It’s like without sex responsibility. Thank you for showing that perspective. I don’t think people understand how hard these artists work to bring you great music.
@@Sab_MJsMama And has an almost inhuman ability to play polyrhytms, I think that his ability to play a different time signature with all his limbs is something that you can't really train
@@jez_77 you can totally train to play different time signatures with different limbs but it's a long hard arduous fucking journey and it takes a lifetime of dedication. I can play 6/4 with my left at a moderate tempo while stroking a 4/4 meter with my right hand, but incorporating the kick is where i'm running in to user error. Honestly tho, it's not something you do for adoration or fame or whatever. I can't stop drumming (to the dismay of my loved ones) and that type of dedication to the craft of drumming is my reason to get out of bed in the morning. I think it takes that level of crazy to drum on Danny's (I'm not there) level. Drumming every day, 4 hours, if I can, but, at least every day drumming. If a kit isn't available working on my sticking, drumming on my knees or any bit of furniture. I think that's what it takes.
@@bohansenboh Definitely a long hard journey, but absolutely possible. I am a self taught drummer (drumming for 20 years) only recently did I start to unlearn all the bad habits from my teenage years. I only get to practice a meager 15-30 minutes each day but have been relearning rudiments and practicing poly rhythms. Getting closer and closer each day to both arms being equal, but still nowhere close to Danny Carey's level.
@@info.williamharris Amen to that brother. You don't really think about it as a teenager but a lot of the songs you've learned in emulate aren't necessarily very technical, and before you know it it's quite easy to get stuck in that rut. But all you can do is try harder next time. Cheers to unresolved goals.
Danny Carey makes me wish that I played the drums. I love watching videos of him playing with kids at different band camps. He must be a pretty cool dude to spend his free time doing that.
I love that you save your comments for the end, and don't constantly pause the video to comment. Also the look on your face watching Danny play was priceless! I've watched this video many times and it still blows me away.
Me before clicking.......Rome's not ready...... The trance he falls in is priceless I love this cause I'm reminded of the emotional rollercoaster I rode the first time listening to this. Thank you for sharing Rome it never too late to start the drums
The part at 3:09 where his left hand gets progressively louder and then quieter in volume whilst the right hand stays constant is pretty high level yet subtle
Also at the same time right may be playing 5 beats in the bar over 5 drums or over 4 drums ! While the left is in 4/4 alternating between 2 and 3 drums it boggles the mind. I needed to slow it down and have lost count of plays to see what he's doing.
Glad you did this. I'm a drummer and Danny is my absolute favorite today. Influenced me for sure. That Boston Jersey he's wearing my gf have him when we saw them in Boston. We had VIP and sat front row center. The best concert experience of my life and I've literally seen hundreds of shows throughout the years. Dig the channel, keep up the good work. Peace.
I've watched many reactions videos to this and your reaction is the best. While others try to decipher what he is doing with the time signature, you are just floating along in the rhythm like most of us tool fans do.
I can’t tell you how excited I am that you’ve finally had your first Tool experience. Probably my all-time favorite band. Got my Spotify 2020 “wrapped” this week, and I’m in the top 0.5% of their listeners (not bragging 😂). I love that they’ve continued to move into a more prog-metal style with all the 10-15 minute songs on Fear Inoculum (I’m an attorney, and I always listen to this album whenever I need to really concentrate on work, as it has a calming effect that helps me focus).
The fact that he can change the volume between each hand at will is super impressive. He knows just how hard to hit each note to make give the desired effect. He's the goat 🐐
It's such a beautiful thing to watch someone hear tool for the first time. Especially someone from the younger gen. You're reaction was priceless young man. I also love how you listened to the whole song before giving your view. Subbed!
Not everyone "gets" Tool, but man seeing you get taken away like that 😲 you are blessed to "get it" straight away! You have a great journey of discovery ahead of you with this band believe me!
A friend introduced me to them in mid-90's. I didn't "get" them. But with headphones and at the proper volume, I did. So, whenever someone tells me they think Tool is just ok, I simply tell them to turn it up...volume is critical especially in the beginning.
For 20 years I've been screaming for people to listen to Danny Carry. So even tho ur not a drummer you definitely picked a good one. Hes the best drummer alive today In my appinion.
There are only two people I'd put anywhere near Danny Carey in terms of skill, specifically within the metal genre, and that is Tomas Hakke of Meshuggah, and Mario Duplantier of Gojira. And even then, as good as they are, they aren't as good as Danny.
Right... YOU were the one screaming for others to listen to Danny. Yeah. Danny had nothing to do with it. Please. 😒 Well... Congrats. Your prayers were answered.
You had one of the best reactions to Danny's performance thus far. You listened to, watched, and truly felt the music. I appreciate the time you took to absorb this exceptional musician's playing because he is a drumming deity!
The reason why the singularity will never happen. Even cyborgs will strive to attain Danny Carey-hood, a goal just out of reach for human and automaton alike.
Danny did a tribute to Neal Peart during their last tour in 2020 which was cool. I love Tool much more than Rush but Peart was a big influence on Danny so they’re both hall of famers in my mind
I love how focused and locked in Danny is while playing.. it's like watching a bball player in the zone, or a pitcher throwing a no hitter, a quarterback who's in a rythm, etc.
“Oh my god” is the only appropriate reaction to so many things Danny does behind the kit. Seeing someone else infatuated with phenomenal drumming makes me feel like I’m sharing that joy.
Mine did! I saw them in Sydney last year, and it was my first TOOL concert (given how infrequently they come here lol). The whole experience was magical from start to finish. If I hadn’t known the words, I honestly wouldn’t have known when one song started and one ended. It was brilliant.
I took a couple of old raver friends to see the Lateralus tour in London. They didn't listen to rock or metal at all, hated it and only really went clubbing to funky house music. Or deep house. Transfixed was the best explanation of their experience. One walked out saying it was the best show he'd ever seen
The impressive part a out this is how well he knows his drum set and how he can do multiple timings with each of his limbs. His entire drum solo, his left hand is like”I got you over her, don’t even look at me.” The next impressive thing, if you notice, is how calm he is behind his drum set. He has perfect posture and is just mellow while destroying it.
Danny's drums are music, not just rhythm. Evolving through every part of the song, actually adding layers of melody, not just percussion. And he makes it look effortless, eventhough what he's doing is actually insanely difficult.
His ability to play complex polyrhythms is unmatched, and probably the most impressive part. On top of that, he has tremendous power, precision, and speed, but uses them all tastefully. He uses a variety of tones and textures, has great dynamics, and is extremely creative.
I have been a solid tool fan since Undertow. I love the spiritual journey each song especially the ones over 10 mins. I love that at 8:37 timeframe on Pnuema (when you was GETTING IT) Danny is hammering away with both hands his back straight and his head loose and slightly back eyes closed as if he himself is in a short relaxing meditation. Ps Your review was awesome! You are now a tool fan! Welcome to the fam. 🤘🏼
Hay. Im watching because I love Tool.. but I'm subscribing because of your amazingly kind words in the beginning of the video. It is good to see somone start off there videos with love. Thank you.
Danny makes me want to go buy a drum kit and set it up with the intention of learning how to play, then grab a can of petrol and burn it to dust cause I’ll never make it to his level!! Lol
It’s about time James reacted to Tool in some way. Now it’s time to react to the following: “Lateralus” “The Grudge” “Forty Six & 2” “Eulogy” “Stinkfist” “Ænema” “Schism”
you know what's wild is if you listen to 7empest and focus on the drums. it's always left off these lists, I think because of how wild it is that Adam is finally just shredding on the guitar. But in the background you hear danny go absolutely nuts for almost the entire song haha
The main thing that Danny does flawlessly is the complex polyrhythms he pulls off... Danny is SOLID !!! Also, the control and dynamics he uses are so on point. Neil Peart is my favorite drummer, but damn, Danny !!! WTF ??!! Rome, the fact that you were able to keep time with the song and are able to pick out all the subtleties is pretty cool too. Awesome reaction, Rome... love it.
So I did the video I didn’t even see the ads coming up, great job man. Personally, if I’m not wiping a little bit of a tear of joy after that performance I wasn’t in my true self. Absolutely love TOOL, seeing them perform Pnuema back to back nights at the staples center was a highlight of the century, the bass drums literally rocked the floor
You should watch the video of Danny playing in his daughter's band. You've never seen a drummer hold back so much and love every second of it. He just looks genuinely happy.
Scrolling through the comments and your the first I see who mentions polyrhythms 👍Danny has a mastery of. He has a level of limb independence all drummers strive for but few reach this.
'Pushit'. I caught Tool in 1992 along with Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine. Rage and Tool caught my ear because of how different they were. Tool caught my ear differently first because of Maynard's voice and power. And then I listened again... The whole bands 'cohesiveness' was on a different level, how they played their own parts, but to each other. And I listened a little closer. When their second album came out, I was intrigued by the extended intros (4° comes to mind), and the build up. When their third album came out, that second drum solo on Pushit blew my mind! '46&2' was another one along with 'Eulogy'. But definitely check out 'Pushit', and then listen again.
Not true you always got something that Danny dont have you just need confidence in bringing it out of you Yes Danny Carey is badass but hes only human who got good at drumming because he put TIME on it if u put TIME in anything it will turn to skills
An octopus has 8 nerve clusters, or "mini-brains" that control each of it's tentacles. Danny is, from what I can tell, the finest poly-rythmic drummer ever. Each of his limbs keeping a different time signature. True poetry in motion.

They would have issues playing Pnemua, Fear Inoculum, and 7empest because of the length. It's fine he still one of the best drummers ever

Totally - I've seen some of the best. Neil, Phil Collins, Carl Palmer, Danny is in a class of his own!
Dude I AM SO HAPPY you dont hit pause and talk every 15 seconds. You are awesome
Thanks for letting everyone know they should jeep listening. 👍
That part is so impressive because he’s playing at least 3 different time signatures at the same time. He’s the greatest drummer in the world right now.
He truly is a beast
@@josephdavis3472 amen. Best way to describe it. Hes fucjing beautiful man, his signatures are his signature lol

I don't think most drummers get to this level. He's not only gifted but disciplined and you can tell he genuinely lives to drum.
Danny Carey makes me wish that I played the drums. I love watching videos of him playing with kids at different band camps. He must be a pretty cool dude to spend his free time doing that.

There are like 12 reactions to this video. Let me sum up all of them. "How the FUCK!"
Imagine having your first time hearing this masterpiece be the same time you get to watch Danny play it live. My head would have exploded.
His entire drum solo, his left hand is like”I got you over her, don’t even look at me.”
The next impressive thing, if you notice, is how calm he is behind his drum set. He has perfect posture and is just mellow while destroying it.
Danny's drums are music, not just rhythm. Evolving through every part of the song, actually adding layers of melody, not just percussion. And he makes it look effortless, eventhough what he's doing is actually insanely difficult.
5:36 "oh my god" I love it when they think Tool has just played to the limits of their ability and its not even close.
His ability to play complex polyrhythms is unmatched, and probably the most impressive part. On top of that, he has tremendous power, precision, and speed, but uses them all tastefully. He uses a variety of tones and textures, has great dynamics, and is extremely creative.
I just like to see other people's reaction to how insanely magical Danny is beating those drums

The main thing that Danny does flawlessly is the complex polyrhythms he pulls off... Danny is SOLID !!! Also, the control and dynamics he uses are so on point. Carey is a master at polyrhythms. That's what you were hearing.
This is a song that you have to just listen to uninterrupted without saying a word just to take in the masterpiece that it is.
You should watch the video of Danny playing in his daughter's band. You've never seen a drummer hold back so much and love every second of it. He just looks genuinely happy.
First thing I noticed is when the break hit you actually immediately knew the polly rhythm timing and were bobbing your head on point well done.
Danny Carey will play this song on point every time you here it.
