"Him" meaning Cohen? Of course they told him this. They do mock cross-examinations in advance. The prosecution has been using corroborating witnesses and documentation before they put Cohen on the stand. Cohen was not the key witness here. David Pecker and Hope Hicks both made it clear that the money was used to cover up the story until after the election.
What other crime? And why isn’t the prosecutors charging it? It’s just shady overreach to upgrade misdemeanours into felonies that way!

I don't understand why the jury is even deciding whether or not a crime has taken place. That was already established in Cohen's case and he served his time for it. That's where this case should start; the defense cannot be that nothing happened or it wasn't illegal.
This jury should be determining one thing only: were Trump's payments to Cohen a reimbursement for the hush money he gave Daniels? If they are, or if they are otherwise unrelated to documented legitimate legal work Cohen was doing for Trump, then Trump is guilty of falsifying business records. He can't deny writing the checks because they have the checks. The only conceivable defense is some other legitimate purpose for those checks. Unless Cohen is specifically withholding some legitimate purpose for the payments, Cohen's credibility is meaningless. His conviction, payment, and reimbursement are facts no matter what he says.
So Trump should have used his campaign money to pay personal expenses and then he could be prosecuted for that instead. Why didn't Trump get prosecuted for this back before he decided to run in 2024?

And even if he did have the cash, why do you think Cohen is obligated to pay Trump's election interfering hush money? Who is the 'billionaire' in this equation? And what difference would it make, since Trump did finally start reimbursing Cohen?
The crime alleged here is the fraudulent record keeping of those repayments, not the fact that hush money was being paid. The fact that it was done to interfere with the 2016 election is what makes it a much more serious than the fraud alone, which, I understand, would only be a misdemeanour. But combined with the election interference puts real teeth in the available punishment, if, as seems all but assured, he is found guilty.
I don't really see how character assassination helps Trump much. Sure, Cohen's testimony tied a bunch of stuff in neat bundles, but the physical evidence and prior testimony early on in the trial, are so overwhelming that it seems hopeless. Unless Trump's lawyers can convince the jury Cohen had his hand firmly up Trump's ass and was manipulating him like a mindless puppet, the trial is essentially over.
Having said all that, this _is_ the USA and its vaunted judicial system we're talking about. I may feel reasonably certain but I sure as f^&k wouldn't put any money on it.

A good practice is read the same article from the left, right, European, Indian, African, and China/Russia. Trump is on trial for _falsifying business records,_ which is most definitely a crime. He hasn't offered any other legitimate reason he was writing those checks, and the fact that he owed Cohen the money for the hush money is already settled. He already paid Cohen separately for his regular services, so the extra checks must be for _something,_ right? What do you suppose that is? Because I haven't even heard any real excuse from Trump himself; he's too busy denying the affair (having already admitted to it years ago) and crying about how we are all so mean to him when we apply the same laws everyone else follows.
