The river trail at Moegatle 4x4 offers a scenic drive and various obstacles to challenge your off road skill.
We continue driving the river trail route at Moegatle 4x4. Waterfall Rock proofed to be a front and rear locker differential obstacle. It’s a scenic drive where we have to cross huge rock on our way to the river bed where we aim to cross various difficult obstacles in the river. Later at the camp, we have a very intense debate about fitting locking differentials to our open axle vehicles or not.

I'd go with being able to tackle every obstacle, you would need at least one locker. Japie, being able to tackle more obstacles = more fun 🤔

Lockers all the way. The open diffs make it a lot harder to cross difficult obstacles.

    • @OffCourse4x4
      @OffCourse4x4  3 года назад

Isn't the point to struggle a bit and in doing so to find a better line or in the end to test the vehicle limits? But yes lockers all the way if one don't want to struggle at all.

Nice one boys! Definitely Pro Lockers. So much more control and no unnecessary stress on the drive train. Have a Prado 120 (open diff) and a Ranger (Rear Locked). Exact obstacle, but the approach is so different when tackling them.

Would lockers kill the fun factor?

@@OffCourse4x4 not really…All Terrain Tyres give better traction, a Lift gives more clearance. All these make the vehicle more capable. You’ll find more challenging obstacles to keep the fun factor going and you can still give it gas at the top and enjoy that sweet sound of that petrol engine😅. But here’s the thing, switch is on the dash, use it/don’t use it. Make the call on the trail. Love this channel👌👍

Also pro locker, at least a rear locker. Less stress on the vehicle, more control, and less track damage often caused by excessive spinning on the wheels without the locker on..

I got the new Jimny 3 weeks ago. Haven’t done any off roading with it yet. If I later find that lockers would be beneficial I’d buy’em in a heartbeat.

lockers are an aid that is good to have. Then you have the option whether to use or not.

Great video, as always. Ant should fit two lockers. Japie should stay locker-free. Don't ask me why though. At least, not in public.

Ok, time to own up. The reasons I said what I did are as follows. And it's not because I want to be mean to Japie. He is a great guy and I both like and admire him. So: 1) I think that obstacle for obstacle, a locker will actually redufe the stress on the running gear. But I also know that Japie will use his locker to try harder and harder obstacles (as will Ant to be fair), and thus the stress goes up. And Cruiser front diffs are known to be a bit fragile. 2) Japie goes hin hin quite a lot. I think this could get expensive. 3) I am unashamedly a Patrol fan, and I don't beleive there is such a thing as an unfair advantage.

@@peterconnan5631 you are so kind 😄 so in a nut shell "hin hin" can become expensive and Japie must rather cary on "hin hin". I think Japie for now tend to agree with you 😉

Open diffs teach you to drive the correct line. If lockers are fitted you will use them more than required and have less fun, yes you will try more difficult lines and will get through with ease. So if you fit a locker only use them as last resort. Not in every condition

  • @murrayblair2159

A rear locker before a front locker. drive as far a possible without using the locker. if the locker is going to be used, it should be as an emergency or safety or if you are on your own. Master your driving skill without a locker to know your vehicle better.

Lockers should be viewed as part of your recovery gear. Where open diffs fail, would you not first use a locker instead of using a winch?

Lockers, my 2 cents worth. What is the purpose of the vehicle? If it has an important mission to be accomplished, then obviously it should be equipped as comprehensively as possible. A good example of this are military vehicles. If you get stuck, you can be killed, or the person you are trying to reach, can be killed. So that is a straightforward decision.
For recreation, the choice is a bit more complicated. In this case it depends on money and what you want to do. You are not overlanding, and it seems that for the two main vehicles, these are not your daily drives. You are going out to have fun, take on challenging obstacles and create outstanding video content for an off road RUclips channel.
I think that you should fit lockers. You will probably find that you then start to attempt more challenging obstacles - which of course is a good thing for us viewers. Remember, you don't have to switch it on, but it is always there if you need it. There is also a safety aspect.
Whatever you decide, we look forward to following the decision with you on this great channel. Well done and thank you.

Driving open diffs is like the 2x4 brigade claiming their 2x4 with a locker can go anywhere. It’s nonsense. Lock up and do the obstacle properly.

Get one at a very good price and have it fitted for free. If you don’t like it, have it removed for free and sell it for a profit. 🛅🤑🤑💰💰👍🏻🙏🏽😷🦘
