This is a good game. The sense of urgency is always in play and plays well with 2-4 players. I was happy that I purchased this game.

kickstarted this game and have got about 5 plays in. I really enjoy it, but I agree about the rule book, it is a lot to take in. Particularly how the undead deckhands work.
Fire management is sooo important, if you're not careful one fire will explode and then you'll have a cascade of explosions that destroy the ship (yes like pandemic's outbreaks). I do find this theme more interesting than usual as well. Looting a pirate ship, that's going down in flames, with the vicious undead scurrying around you...man, awesome.

The Curse of the Black Dice is 2nd co-op game (semi co-op) with pirate theme. Check it out on Essen :).

I'd choose this one over either Pandemic or Flash Point-- as neither of those themes appeal to me. But given the difficulty level I'll probably not be planning to rush out and buy it right away-- this one goes on my "maybe" list.

When I look ad the game everything is awesome.
But between length, having to deal with confusing and many rules, hopelessness as not enough actions to make a victory possible, down time for five players, lack of freedom to do things as you'd want, it's hard for my group to keep wanting to play it.
We end up stressed out and barking at each other, one guy just wants to amass cutlasses to fight, one has to take deckhands off every turn or we'd lose. If we prolong the game there's too much to handle... If we get treasure too early everything is a mess and goes to hell.
After all that we still lose

If the dice started one level lower than what was on the tile do you think that would make the game way too easy?

Cooperative pirate game souns so awesome. Shame it's about firefighting, it really feels like a theme conflict. Is there a good pirate boardgame that is about being pirates and not firefighting?

Regarding difficulty, I think it should be noted that the game has three difficulty levels. Generally when I play I shoot for as high as I can go, but sometimes have to settle for low or medium difficulty as the game progresses. This game definitely rewards multiple plays, as you learn how and when to handle the different threats.
If you win any of your first three games you probably got a rule wrong, but the more you play the easier it gets. I can win on low difficulty about 50% of the time, and medium about 25%. I have only won hard once. The hardest difficulty is often impossible, because it is quite easy to lose a treasure chest due to an explosion.
Lastly, I agree 100% with regards to the rulebook. It is nearly impossible to play the game correctly the first time. You really have to do a lot of searching to find things.

This needs a different theme... If the game was more a game of the characters are treasure hunters and instead of a ship it was a pharaoh's tomb and the different rooms were different rooms of the pyramid and different rooms had different kinds of traps (hence different colors dice) and everything had the Egyptian pyramid/mummy feel to it it would be so much better fitting.

I think this game is good with this theme... However I really love your idea. I think if they did an Egyptian theme, more could be done with it. You should see about making that kinda game!

not sure if I'd like this game. This really looks like one of those games where you basically HAVE to do certain moves in your round pretty much taking the choice away from you, unless you want to lose of course.

+Szajko Dice Tower has many overlapping game reviews by different reviewers. A lot of games have been separately reviewed by Tom, Sam, GameBoyGeek, etc.

Sure, but when it comes to Sam, Zee, and Tom it is much more rare to see such an occasion - I cannot really recall any other. Especially, since Zee is also a frequent guest on Miami Dice.
