    • @TheBuckBratager
      @TheBuckBratager 2 года назад +6

      I really hope they do. I'd really like to see this extend to sorcerers, as well, due to their parentage. Then Sorcerers and Warlocks could be the "depends on their subclass" casters, Wizards and Artificers would be arcane, Clerics and Paladins would be divine, and Druids and Rangers would be primal. Bards are a bit of a toss-up for me, even though they're clearly MEANT to be arcane. Letting them choose on character creation might be cool; I could see a situation where a swords bard might be a staunch defender of a woodland realm, a magical battlefield support option, or a combat-oriented maestro, so letting them choose makes a certain kind of sense.

    Fueling further speculation on the disentanglement of feats and ASIs, JC mentions level 20 feats, but no class gets an ASI at level 20. Might've been a throwaway line, but also might indicate that feats and ASIs are at least partially separate now.

    About Aasimar and Ardling: I feel like the animal heads are very fitting for the Exalted (so Chaotic Good) planes. However, I feel like one of the Heavenly and Idyllic options should be closer to an Aasimar, and the other be different from those two. Maybe make Heavenly look like Aasimars did, (especially since they also get the light cantrip) , and make Idyllic have faces made of certain objects, like the artworks of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

      The Guardinals were the beastly Celestials from the Neutral Good(Idyllic) plane, so it makes more sense for the Ardlings to be related to them. I agree about Aasimar being the Lawful Good option though.

      Any DM I've played with in 5th would let you make an Aasimar look like any celestial you wanted, so this doesn't really feel like a new option to me, from an aesthetics perspective. I dont think they are only going to stick to the three spell lists for everything. It will only be used for specific things like references for feats and racial features.
    All of the spellcasting classes will still have their own tailor made spell lists, so Bards will still gain healing spells and eldritch blast will still be a cantrip that belongs to the warlock spell list.

    What I think they can do for the half races make a table for the traits you can get if your a half race so for if you do like a half race if your closer to your human pearent you get the feat but you get elf spell and drop the rest but if you do the other way you get trance and inspiration to the table would include a main trait passed and a secondary for each race

    • @salvadortoscano2534
      @salvadortoscano2534 2 года назад

      Oh, silly random person on the internet, didn't you know that making such a table would be too time-consuming for Wizards? :/
      I'm not trying to start any conflict with you, I'm just completely done with Wizards getting lazy with their work, in D&D and in MTG. They don't want to make half-races because they don't want any political crap going down on Twitter about being racist in an *imaginary game.* Instead, they'll say, "You choose what you want your half-race to be, first mechanics, then aesthetics." Since seeing Tasha's crap basically making races "human+" with fluff differences replacing mechanical differences between races, I've known they don't want to deal with anything related to race in terms of drama. How they're now handling half-races proves my point more.
      I've made a half-drow, half-dragonborn fluff-wise by making him a Hellfire variant tiefling. Boom, creative solution to an interesting mechanical problem for such a character concept. This I believe is done *because* of mechanical differences between races (both drow and dragonborn have an increase in Charisma, so their kid will definitely have a Charisma boost). When you remove that, you get more boring characters because an Orc wizard and a Human wizard will mechanically be the *exact same* under these new rules. Same with a half-race and a full race. Wizards has decided to completely *ignore* variance and creativity for mechanical "equality" and uniformity, and because of this, they have gotten lazy with their work.
      Sorry for the rant-y response, I just am not enjoying how Wizards is going with this. I'd absolutely *love* a full half race table thing with tons of variance between certain race combinations, but I think that will have to come from homebrew instead of Wizards. Since in 5e, everyone *already* relies on homebrew to some extent, I think Wizards is just drowning in their own poor decisions and they're trying to stay relevant by any means necessary while still trying to not offend anyone they care about (Twitter and the public society, *not* their players.)

    • @paulphillip8894
      @paulphillip8894 2 года назад

      @@salvadortoscano2534 yea cause I would be very easy to just cut the racial traits right now into main and secondary for the table and you pick a main from one half and secondary for the other cause that would also aid backstory wise if your making a character
      Also add for role play cause then you can hide a racial ability while showing the other the other to convince them
      Or it may give you sowing to bond with each race with like if you take the dragon born breath weapon you can use it as a bonding or convincing factor in relation building with other dragon born
      That Can also help just mix within itself cause you can be born of 2 different dragon born and get the resistance of one buthe the breath of the other so many options

    • @TheCrimsonElite666
      @TheCrimsonElite666 2 года назад

      Good, the Rogue and Paladin were one of the main reasons why people complained about the game being too easy. The worst thing a DM can experience is watching their BBEG getting one-shotted because either the Rogue or Paladin scored a crit. It's especially bad with the Paladin because it caused many players to abuse the system by crit-fishing and only divine smiting when they crit. It's bad for the DM because all of the build-up for the BBEG lead to an anti-climax, and the other players are robbed of agency with their big battle.

    • @miridium121
      @miridium121 2 года назад +2

      @@TheCrimsonElite666 that is a problem of bosses having too little hp, and should not be used to "punish" two thirds of the classes in the game, while making the rules more confusing and less satisfying even for the remaining third if they have any bonus damage to roll for in a crit, like hunter's mark.

    • @salvadortoscano2534

      @@TheCrimsonElite666 I nearly shit my pants when my NPC goon almost got One-shot by a *regular* hit from my player's barbarian. I think it's more of an HP issue, not burst damage potential being an issue. Paladins would save their smites anyways because they use their spell slots as fuel, why would I smite and waste a spell slot on that if I could get *double* the potential damage on a Crit instead?? For rogues, sneak attack is their lifeline for staying relevant in combat, being able to double the output on that on a Crit is *fun* for the players, all of them!
      Critical hits in *any* game I think is supposed to be a bit overpowered, because it's meant to be relatively rare for a fun reward. Nerfing it hurts the fun of getting it, because now crits won't matter as much in combat in One D&D as they currently do in 5e.

    These types of changes, while not bad, and some are good, will force more work onto the DM to give their setting the flavor it will need. Hopefully, they will include hints and instructions on doing that in the DMG. I think if they keep the core generic and setting free, and then let the splat books have the tweaks and setting-specific changes I think this could work quite well. Making the PHB more generic in the presentation will help with that also. If they don't, it's going to end up conflicting with a lot of the material and lore that came before that it's supposed to be compatible with.

    (this didn't start as a rant, but now it's a rant!) I'm really disappointed about them changing rules because SOME people aren't familiar with or doesn't understand current rules. Case in point, spell attacks and crits. It's in the rules! If folks aren't getting it, then rewrite the wording so people DO understand it.
    I also don't like that it seems like all you have to do is walk up to Jeremey Crawford and tell him that you don't understand something or tell him about your homebrew rule and now the D&D team is off to the races to change things. There is a large silent majority of players playing by the rules and not complaining about the rules. As a DM, I am super clear that a nat 20 on a skill check is not an auto success.
    I've heard him say on a couple occasions that when people change the rules, that's no longer D&D. I recall that there was an issue with rolling an attack and the number equaled the AC. In the rules that is a hit, but the DM was ruling the the roll need to exceed the AC for it to hit. I'm paraphrasing here, but basically JC said "that's not D&D". So the disappointing part is that now people go up to him and say that they do nat 20s for skill checks and saving throws and instead of him saying "that's not D&D" he gives them the thumbs up.
    Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the new changes. But this one grinds my gears.

      "That's not (our) D&D." I think is *really* what he meant. Now, with WotC and most people in society being so sensitive to *any* type of criticism, Mr. Crawford now doesn't want to get cancelled on Twitter so he just agrees with *everyone,* now. Just stick with the game, and let the players change it however they want. That's obviously what we've been doing, and now WotC wants to generalize everything in their new edition to try and allow people to change what they want, as long as doing so doesn't change the RAW (like lore, aesthetics, etc.; fluff, not mechanics)

    It seems like the change to critical hits advantages martial classes versus spellcasters. However, it nerfs gish characters like Bladesingers, Eldrich Knights, and Hexblades who add spell damage to their weapon damage. Unclear if the reduction in damage by enemies is sufficient compensation. It is kind of nice that this advantages martial characters.

    From what I heard so far, I like most of the changes. I appreciate a mechanical background that is separate from the lore/setting background. With how much homebrew games there are and how much different official settings we have come to see and will get further down, it just makes sense to me. I feel like this gives you a lot more adaptive possibilities to build a char. I do understand though, that some people might miss the more excessive „guidelines“ to races and background, as they now might miss something to grab on for their Charakter concept. I would love it if we would move to only the three spell lists, as the current ones are a pet peeve of me. Really excited about what is to come with classes .
    Edit:
    Also what a lot of people might forget, no one has to use any of the new rules. You can just proceed to play 5E or even 3.5E rules. In Reality, I have not once played in group that was absolutely RAW. It’s a bit like “Uno”. Every table has their own rule set derived from the RAW and every table is different. Some of them might stick close and some might do wild stuff. It doesn’t really matter for the game as a whole, bc all that really matters is that the players around each table have fun with the rules they choose to play by. And I actually do think, that by generalizing and decluttering the basic rule set, while similarly giving more freedom to the players, you make it easier for everyone to be able to play their idea of the game.

    You missed one important change to grapple: It no longer takes an action to escape. It is an automatic roll at the end of each turn. I think this is welcome, as grappling is a bit OP in 5e.
    Another important general change I see is in the *formatting* of the rules. They have clear, boldfaced bullet points for all the rules. This will be a very welcome change, as the existing books are quite terrible for quickly looking up specific rules. I guess this is inspired by OSE/the OSR movement. I would buy new books just for this, and I hope it stays in the final version. Spells badly need this treatment too, and I think they will get it.

    The more I think about it, the more I think that some of these new rules are designed to break optimization/power builds. The Arcane/Divine/Primal spell lists aren’t meant to replace class spell lists, they’re designed to limit what you can take with Magic Adept. So no more taking spells like Booming Blade with magic adept on a martial class, no more taking something like Silvery Barbs or any of the other spells released in other supplements. You’re limited to one of the spells in these three lists in the PHB and that’s it.
    The First Level Feats thing is obviously intended to stop people from using a variant human/custom lineage from taking something like Crossbow Expert or Greatweapon Master or Polearm Master at first level like a lot of optimization builds call for. I imagine they’re going to print a blanket rule that any feat that’s not explicitly marked with a level from other sources is assumed to be a 4th
    Level feat or later.
    The crit rules only doubling weapon damage dice and not critting on spells are designed to keep characters from doing things like one-rounding dragons and other things with a crit smite or crit disintegrate. I don’t doubt that there’ll be other ways to do it after, but they seem to be trying to break that.
    If I had to speculate on further changes in future releases, I imagine that they’re going to make major changes to abilities like Action Surge to only allow for weapon attacks or unarmed strikes, so that every caster build isn’t like “so this is when you take 2 levels of fighter for Action Surge.”
    I’m not saying I agree with any/all of these changes, just that it seems to me like this is the direction they’re going to be steering towards.

    • @Florian0799
      @Florian0799 2 года назад +1

      I think they actually plan to separate feats from ASI again because frankly that was a stupid idea to begin with. Feats are what makes a character unique but you also need the ASI in order to survive at higher levels. So therefore it was always a what am I going to do every four levels.

    the grappling mechanic changes is really interesting, an added benefit but the down side of free escape chances at the end of the turn. can they spend the turn their action to break out?
    the on hit grappling makes is strange too, it's easier to grapple a 11 AC CR 2 ogre than a cr 1/8 town guard with ac16. It's true that with ignoring the athletics skill to it, you cheapen barbarians' rage ability, the squat nimbleness feat and any class that took expertise in athletics/acrobatics to be champion grapplers/shovers/escape artists, since the new 'escape' mechanic uses saves not ability checks.
    My feedback will be, leave it as a contest, but add the new condition; disadvantage on other targets, and grappler moving gains that 'slowed condition. You could then make the 'grappler' feat have the added benefit of being 'on a hit with unarmed strike', that would give that feat a actual purpose.

    • @hatihrodvitnisson

      I think one reason they’re changing it to not a contest is that they’re going to try and remove contests to conform with the new rules of “every d20 test automatically succeeds on a 20 and fails on a 1”. It could lead to situations where both parties automatically succeed or fail, and they’re going to try and remove as many instances of that possibility as they can. Before, unless a check was very hard(25 or above), a 20 was an automatic success anyway, unless it was a skill you weren’t proficient in and the related stat was under 10. But if you had expertise, then you could automatically pass most easy checks at fairly early levels. I don’t like that if I or one of my players has a +15 to a skill that they’d still have a chance to fail on an skill check of 5.

    I certainly like some of these changes but others not so much.
    What I like:
    A feat at first level
    Dwarves getting tremorsense
    No more sunlight sensitivity it hampered a lot of player choices. I have a friend who picked half drow just because of that...
    Expanded tool proficiency from Xanathar's now no longer being optional. Most people laugh tools away. Which is completly unwarranted in my opinion.
    New slowed condition
    What I do not like:
    Crits only working for players and on weapon or unarmed attacks. Why even? That also nerfs grave clerics!
    Automatic outcome on 20 and 1 for skill checks. Seriously So a Player can auto succeed A DC 25 with level 1?
    The complete butchering of subraces. Just look at the poor wood elf there whole uniqueness with going stealthy is lost also downgraded wood elf magic. Also why do they get a 2nd level spell only on fifth level?
    Ardling instead of Aasimar. Why make a completly loreless sterile celestial ancestry race if you have one with rich lore.
    Dragonborn nerfed again just after being buffed?
    Gnomes are now way to powerful considering saving throws.
    High elves getting misty step. So they are Eladrin now?
    Where are half orcs and half elves?
    Removal of the Mordenkainen tieflings and winged tieflings
    No background feature anymore
    background equipment on several backgrounds does not even has rations anymore. Certainly a lot less equipment for example on acolyte and noble.
    Feats being level bound.
    Return to fixed ability score boni at first level just from background now.
    Loosing inspiration on a long rest.
    Seemingly removal of Eldritch Blast. If it becomes an ability for the Warlock now I still dislike it because you cannot pick it via a feat anymore.
    What I am not sure about:
    Uhh the new categorization of spells.
    My biggest dislike however remains the change to wood elf. So they only get 5ft extra movement and get a worse wood elf magic. So They get that free house now but with the implication of yeah you have to take druidcraft as opposed to any druid cantrip and than on top of that you get pass without trace at level 5 only even though you could get all 3 spells at once with level 4 before that. Furthermore no more mask of the wild which was their completly unique thing. Elf weapon training also seems to be gone. Will certainly be fun on bladesingers than I guess. My wood elf druid also uses a longbow often so that will certainly also be out of the window. I think the it was a misprint with the elf not getting the new version of trance, u see how they have been slipping on the quality of content since they have been focusing on 6e. I'm also kind of sad about missing mask for wood elves but it is a very poorly worded feature and tends to be forgotten about in most campaigns. They may be redesigning the hiding mechanic and may make this feature unworkable so it's easier for them to discard.

      A few things (in no particular order):
      1) This is PLAYTEST let them know what you want how you feel about everything once the survey goes out.
      2) Ardlings are not replacing Aasimar, Crawford himself said that they are just two different races with similar origins. (Also, they very rarely include any lore in the UA, that stuff is saved for the final book, because you can't playtest lore)
      3) There is nothing wrong with the changes they made to half-races. It just gives an easy mechanical way to play any half-race you want. DMs often changed half-race lore in their own games anyway.
      4) Background Features RARELY ever actually saw any in-game use for the majority of tables, the new way Backgrounds work is INFINITELY better, including ASI being part of them instead of Race.
      5) Feats being level bound literally only serves as a positive for balancing them as the game adds more.
      6) All Backgrounds get 50gp of equipment because some old Backgrounds really shafted players who wanted to be creative. Also, every background can easily afford rations with their leftover gold, so this is a non-issue.
      7) I like spells not being able to crit, spellcasting has always had a massive leg up on weapons, and it was a thing in older editions, so it's not like it's a brand new concept. I do agree about Monsters not being able to crit, though. Not good.
      8) The fixed Ability Scores are just for premade Backgrounds if you want a specific build, but the document says you can still change them however you want.
      9) The Elf options are perfectly fine, though I agree, they need to be a bit more powerful and varied. (The High Elf getting Misty Step doesn't invalidate the Eladrin, because they don't get any special bonuses attached to their Misty Step. Eldarin still have their 4 unique bonuses and Shadar Kai still have their damage resistance.) Just add a bit more, like the Wood Elf's Mask of the Wild to each lineage, and maybe more spells, and they're good.
      10) They have said every race after Tasha's Cauldron will be compatible with this new edition, so you can still play all of those races in One D&D, though I feel like they should just make the Dragonborn just be the Fizban's Dragonborn, just categorized like the Elves in this UA.
      11) Everything else I 100% agree with.

    Others have already said as did Ted that this is all just Playtest at this time, and unless I'm mistaken even after they make a final version it's all still optional. The only issue with that is if Playing Adventure League (I'm biased and don't like AL personally, but that is because I had a bad experience with it and know that lots of people love AL play.)

    Unless I go and try AL again or try to run an Organized game that is not with core group and RAW creation is mandatory then nothing WoTC puts out is going to bother me. I have a great group of people that are all Adults and we discuss on a regular basis what we want to add or not add into our Games. (3 DM's and 4 campaigns, with the main one going for almost 3 years now)
    I am of the opinion of Live and let live when it comes to things like this because at the end of the Day My D&D is always going to be different from everyone else's. We all can take away what we want from the new books in 2 years and still not worry about it changing any ongoing game. Sure it might change how a new campaign goes depending on if we use any of it but until it happens and the new books drop Nothing They have put out recently changes what's going on at My groups Table. It's all just different ideas being floated by that may or may not stick by the time the Book is Finalized.

    Farmers automatically know the Halfling language.
    What the heck is this?
    Other concerns.
    The reason campaigns peter out after level 10, is that high level campaigns really need to be customized to the party to provide challenges without to much risk of a TPK. This is due to the character power level, and giving more feats earlier will end campaigns faster.
    "Just Homebrew it what you want" is bad for two reasons. First of all, it's lazy. Why am I paying for rules that just say make stuff up? The answer is that so everyone in the community has a base for sharing their experiences. Second, it ends up gatekeeping inexperienced players out of the game. A full set of base rules to get people off the ground and into the game, before they start tinkering is so much better.
    There is an Arcane spell list.
    If they merged the spell lists for Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard and Warlock, and just let them all pick whatever, that's going to suck. Celebrate differences, don't erase them. How is that a nerf? Previously folks were limited to that healing once a short orange rest, now you can do it as often as the creature as hit dice.

    • @ExplosiveFuel89
      @ExplosiveFuel89 2 года назад

      The average heal with the current healer feat at level 5 is 12.5hp, 17.5 at level 10, and increaseing with each level. Where the UA one is anywhere from 6.5hp to 9.5 dependant on hit dice at level 5 to at most 12.5 average at level 17 for a barbarian.
      It comes out you can only heal one creature once with the current one for more HP and go and heal a different one for the same ammount, vs two or three turns for the UA version to hit the same amount. Healing on one creature is more over time with the UA, but over all healing potential is much lower.
      As for the stabilizing creature and bringing them to 1 hp, I used that much less and like the rerolling of hp on spells more.
      Mathematically per heal it's a nerf, using it on the same creature is a buff but if you're bouncing from ally to ally healing the current use is much better. Where as healing one creture over and over again this UA one is a buff depending on level and number of rounds that have passed.

    Honestly I think that everything sounds really good as a first glance. As you say, some thing depends on how they do the other things, but I like what I've seen so far.
    As for the crit change I think it may be a slight way to reward weapon users for being a bit more limited. And I've always thought it a bit weird how weak critical hits are for weapons without any special ability or magic involved. Sharp shooter/GWM is a great example. I hit something with my +1 weapon and +3 ability modifier. Base DMG is 14 before the dice. I'm using a longbow, so base DMG is 19,5. A critical hits add another 5,5 and thus increase my DMG by 25%. Even without SS/GWM the DMG increase is only 50% higher than base.
    Opposed to a spellcaster doing any spell that gets a 100% increase in DMG. Unless we are talking warlock with eldritch blast or draconic sorcerer with associated elemental DMG.
    So yeah, tweaking it so that weapon users are the ones actually benefitting most from critical hits sounds fine to me, although I might have preferred them just saying critical hits double your DMG total. But that might make them way too powerful. Or have critical hits tied to proficiency bonus. You get +3 DMG for each point of proficiency bonus. That way everyone get the same amount, though the DMG scales poorly into upper levels of course.
    So might just be best to make critical hits into "slightly better hits" as is suggested currently. Or you could say that you add the weapon dice size to DMG, so on a D12 weapon you just add +12dmg straight up. Anyways, minor thing since crits are a small part, but would be fun if they did have a bit more omf =)

Like if a rogue with a +8 to dexterity rolls a 16 on a DC25 and can't succeed. How can a wizard with a -2 to dexterity succeed on a DC25 just because they rolled a 20?

    I'm kinda liking what they're doing with Backgrounds, but I feel that *as presented* it's entirely too structured and limiting.
    I think it should be two Skills, one Skill, Language, or Tool, and one Tool or Language.
    Give Backgrounds enough flexibility to fit just about any origin story: maybe my Scholar doesn't need a Tool, but wants as many Languages as she can get? Maybe my Farmer doesn't need any Languages but what the locals speak, but needs to know how to herd goats or drive a cart or raise a barn?
