Thanks, Isaac. This video contains an awful lot of concepts for us to completely understand and digest. Through your videos and Barry’s online class, I am slowly but surely getting comfortable with the concepts of borrowed diminished notes and dominants other than the tonic’s dominant (and its tritone). There are a lot of things to put together, and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is an excellent song to work these things out.
I loved this lesson! I learned so much and have a lot I now know I need to practice such as up a fifth, down a fifth and the minor 6th movement! One suggestion for another great Barry Harris sound is using a double diminished on the Eb7 going to AbMaj7 (where you play G diminished and F# diminished on top of it). It has a lovely sound there!
Another great lesson. I like how you show his technique through a song . I like to see you thinking through it in real time . Plus the fact you do things in slow motion. Barry’s videos are great but sometimes too fast to follow with out a lot of pausing and rewinding.
Thanks Isaac for another great instruction. I’ve been following you for several months now. Reading Dave Shepherd’s very recent comment from just today, I am in his situation as well. Seeing and hearing you play what you are talking about is very helpful, but because I am not yet a “master wonkster” of all the theory, it would be helpful to see chord notation for what’s being played. (full chart not necessary). What I would do is annotate my chart and then practice and perhaps watch the video again to catch more of your points of theory. If available on your Patreon channel, I’ll register and support. Another way of saying all this is that your knowledge level table stakes for implementing the message of this particular lesson a stretch for me. I hope you can tell that I’m not complaining, just giving feedback... You are one of only 3 channels I follow and will continue to follow on a regular basis.
I had a lot of trouble following Isaac's lessons in the past too. One thing that helped clear it up was practicing his video titled the Barry Harris 10 chord routine. I did that in most keys a while ago, and was able to notice a lot of common patterns and shapes, that have allowed me to follow along to new videos much easier. Hopefully that may be helpful for you too, if u haven't taken a look at that video yet!
