You have to remember that it takes a lot longer to restore steam locomotives in today's world. Because there are only a few places left in the world that manufacture parts for steam locomotives.
i actually called the park in 2016 and inquired If the engine was on property. It was confirmed that it was out for service. I assumed it was @ Tweetsie Railroad. Dollywood''s Disneyland & Walt Disney World engines are often times sent there for refurb. I had a vloger "rack me over the coals" for that speculation. Sometimes ppl. should be knowledgeable about a subject before "pouncing" on other people who may know more than them. While it's sad it may not return soon. I'd rather it run correctly. Wouldn't want to wreck an almost 70 yr. old engine. BTW, I've been pulled by all 5 engines. I was delighted being on the Ward.
Disney did some pretty intense calls for help from multiple tourist railroads to borrow their workers. Iger thought it was taking too long and put out an all call to any former employees to come finish it. The massive to do list got finished in about two months
Its true, since 2016 he’s been missing and there were no news on when it will return until now. No one has ever been talk about updates of it, so I decided to answer that question as possible.
So on 2023, E.P. Ridley the train engine #2 would come back to Disneyland and California screamin and Paradise Pier would come back to Disney California adventure and that would be exiting.
California Screamin & Paradise Pier? No. E.P Ripley (engine #2), Yes. It is exciting, but its just that we don’t know what date it’ll be rerunning yet.

Plus, the #1 Disneyland engine, the C.K. Holiday stands out to me the most as well.

E. P. Ripley is back!
Plus I love the Holiday Red train as well.
UPDATE: there are credible reports that the Ripley is back at Disneyland and has been undergoing testing after hours.
Really, where did you hear that?

I hope to see the locomotive soon, this summer.
I love the video! However, I had no idea the E.P. Ripley engine hadn't been seen too often.
