I don't think the bugs needed windows since the Dominion had those X-ray specs. Plus, the 'crew comfort' aspect of windows is completely lost on a race of mass produced clones driven by religious fanaticism.
Terrifying ship to face, cheap and easy to mass produce with expendable and easy to replace crews who are not afraid to die. Nice comparison with the Zero
Wrong comparison. The Zero was not easy to mass produce because the Japanese industry sucked. It couldn´t easily mass produce any technical sophisticated weaponary. Furthermore, the Japanese had top pilots when war started, but a year later most of them were dead and could not be replaced.
We did see it on Voyager! Kes was doing flight simulation with Paris on the holodeck and we see Dominion ships attacking - (yes, I know they just reused ds9 footage for this scene)
Dominion Bug Ship, the king of death by a thousand cuts and if that doesn't work suicide run. Loved the idea that these were swarm ships, lots of small vessels overwhelming a foe with massive numbers. Dominion numbers vs Federation tech advantage. Great episode as always!
I looked at a few pictures, and the Jem'Hadar Fighter (name given by memory alpha) is somewhere around the general size of the Klingon B'rel class Bird of Prey. Also, I believe that there would be a Vorta on board each vessel and according to memory alpha you have 1 Vorta and 42 Jem'Hadar which seems to make sense to me. A Vorta is expected to sacrifice his or her life for the greater good of the Dominion. ...It is the order of things
Yeah Jem'hadar fighter, but they frequently called it a warship so maybe a frigate class, mostly attacks in packs. Crew and size about the same as the defiant.
The Dominion Fighter or Attack Ship, its been called both, is pretty small and serves as the main bulk of the Dominion's navy. They said it had no windows in a few episodes. Its also more than a match for most federation vessels, except for the Defiant, unless several vessels attacked at once. They are fairly small ships which is why they probably traveled in groups or pairs. Swarming targets like they swarmed the Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order fleet. Also, they always have a Vorta on board with the Jem Hadar. The Vorta over sees the ketresel white distribution and has the vials stored and locked away to maintain control, so the suicide attacks are carried out with a Vorta on board.
Honestly I think TNG is the strongest and it is my favorite, I do like DS9 as my second favorite even though the bajorans and religious space magic annoys me.
I liked DS9 the best simply because I love fleet battles. The ones in TNG were very short or often off-screen. DS9 was the first time I saw giant fleets fighting (About the same time B5 was out which I loved about it too, more fleet action) Overall however, every series is hard for me to quantify because ALL of them have episodes that I absolutely LOVE and episodes that I can't STAND. lol
42 crew, all Jem'Hadar bar one Vorta. The Attack ship is slightly smaller than the Defiant class. It is sometimes referred to as a fighter and used in this role, usually in squads of three. Sometimes a pair will do reconnaissance. They pack a lot of firepower for their size but seem to be very fragile as portrayed on screen. I think the scarab/bug look gives them an ominous menace that reinforces the image DS9 was tiring to portray. I liked he refinement of the ST:O version you showed.
Great episode, as always! I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and finally contribute what I can to the show. You guys always put a smile on my face when I see a new episode. :)
A battle scenario of a dozen armored Tactical Cubes and another dozen Assimilation Cubes going into the Gamma Quadrant to go up against the Dominion, perhaps of 27 Cubes all linked together into a SuperCube configuration; or otherwise from opposite point of 4-5 Dominion Battleships, 12-15 Dominion Warships, with 150 - 200 Dominion Attack ships invading the Delta Quadrant to attack a Borg Unicomplex with a couple dozen Cubes, Spheres, Diamond ships would in either way be very interesting to see the possibilities between the Borg and the Dominion. To have a nice big Borg vs Dominion battle mashup would be fascinating.
Regarding windows: As Star Trek fans, we're familiar with how notoriously difficult it is to ascertain the size of a ship, when there's nothing of known size to compare it to. One in universe possibility would be that the attack ships have lots of small fake windows, as a psychological distraction, fooling some opponents into believing that the attack ships are larger than they actually are. It would be a little like present day fighters having fake cockpits painted in the underside.
Whenever there is Jem'Hadar, there is a commanding V'Orta. So when you see those ships ramming other ships there are indeed V'Orta on the bridge. A V'Orta commands the Jem'Hadar and they must hand out the ketrecel white.
Remember, A Vorta is also a meat-bot. Even though they have friction with the super soldiers of the dominion, they are the same, only super bureaucrats. That fact makes them horrifying.
Great episode as always, guys. Just a quick note (you said you'd be corrected!). It was introduced in the second series, not the fourth. Got the episode name right though.
I had always thought of the Dominion fighter/attack ship being more reminiscent of a Scarab shape instead of a 'bug'. These Dominion attack ships do have fairly good firepower and speed for their relative size compared to other actual starships. As attack ships, it does make sense especially given the size of the crews needed to properly staff it for flying, instead of the one or two crew as an actual fighter craft might have. These attack ships didn't need windows, since the only one who needed to see outside, was the pilot of it, and thus wore the sensor feedback headset to "see" around the ship. I don't think the Dominion designers wanted to allow the ship occupants to see outside of it, and made the Jem'Hadar to be highly disciplined in all that they did. This attack ship brings to mind the episode that the various people from DS9 infiltrated the Ketracel White facility to destroy it. I've wanted to see what would happen in a battle between the Borg and the Dominion for several years. The Borg heavily armored Tactical and Assimilation Cube ships, in a good sized fleet to go up against a similar sized fleet of 1-2 Dominion Battleships, a few Dominion Warships, and then a few good-sized squadrons of the Dominion Attack Ships would be fascinating. That and how the Borg shields might handle the Dominion's polaron beams, their relative fighting styles, a hundred or more Borg to infiltrate a Dominion battleship and then assimilate some Dominion Jem'Hadar soldiers with their Vorta handlers or maybe even 'Borg-ify' a Dominion ship. THat would be very interesting to see what might happen.
Small note but the Star Trek Online ship at 17:30 looked like the Jem'Hadar Strike Ship which was a Tier 6 advancement of the more traditional Jem'Hadar Attack Ship which is a Tier 5 ship in game.
Regarding the discussion about Vorta at 9:20 or so, They also would HAVE to have a Vorta on board at all times for any missions lasting longer than a couple of days - they dispense the white right? No Vorta, no white - dead Jem 'Hadar, no? I never saw an ep or read a book where the white dispenser was given to the Jem H'dar willingly to distribute. So, based on that fact, IMO there would always be a Vorta on board a bug ship. Perhaps on suicide runs they would omitt the Vorta, if they fed the Jem'HaDar troops their white RIGHT before disembarking the Vorta, and sent them on a very short range suicide mission - I don't know how long a tube of white lasts, but based on DS9 it doesn't seem very long, a matter of a few days based on what I've seen on the various eps regarding it.
+SerHaHa It really depends on the mission profile I would think, a long range patrol etc would need a vorta in command but if it was operating in conjunction with a larger carrier ship then the vorta would probably be in command from the main ship
I agree that the fan pic with the windows is likely incorrect. The windows don't match the scale as you mentioned nor do they match the design ethos of the Dominion. Jem Hadar don't get depressed if they can't see the stars go by unlike the Voyager crew so there is no need; function trumps form even on the bridge as only the First and the Vorta even have the google glass eyewear to see what is going on outside the ship. Finally, in the episode where they capture an intact crashed ship, they said that the hull was incredibly strong by Federation standards to survive the crash intact and almost space worthy. Windows by definition are structural weakpoints compared with the rest of the hull so would reduce that benefit significantly.
I'd love to hear what you guys think of the USS Relativity and the USS NX2000 Excelsior. I loved the USS NX2000 Excelsior so much I almost lost it when I first saw it in space dock.
The jemhadar were grown and capable of fighting in 3 days,so it makes sense the dominion would have a mass producible ship for them to crew,3-6 days,so the ship is not only insect like in design but in concept from the beginning. So why didn't mass production happen during the war? Because nearly all the dominion fleet yard's,99%,were in the gamma quadrant, combined with limitations on ketracel white production they had no choice but to resort to building sturdier ships to survive against the more powerful alpha/beta quadrant vessels.
If I recall correctly Jem 'Hadar rest standing up and don't use beds or quarters. So the windows wouldn't be 1 per room they'd be one long decorative window for the communal crew space or other meeting or training areas and not lots of small rooms - potentially at least - That would explain why the windows look wrong as they are not normal windows in the same sense as they'd be on a Federation ship. Besides some ships have tiny head height port holes and not full length windows like the Enterprise D has which would also throw the perception of scale off.
I would think the windows on the ship as a bit of psychological warfare on the part of the Dominion. They are not windows, but lights designed to look like windows to visually make the ship look larger than it really is to someone looking at it. Intimidation factor cannot be underplayed when it comes to the Dominion.
I love this ship! So here are some notes. Windows. So there not windows. that is why the votra and First have the google glasses. So whatever those things are there not windows. All ships have 1 Vorta. No Jem'hadar is meant to be income command, as the Jem'hadar have a hard time not having control when it comes to the white.
The bug ship can warp drive speed for 9 to 10 hours at warp factor 9.That's what i heard in DS9 series. They use this ship to move cargo and troops fast.Do they need to sleep or can they sleep in their lifetime?
Bishop was called a jem'hadar fighter by the Klingons and by the crew of the defiant so Starfleet a jem'hadar fighter that's what it was called but the Klingons and the Federation in Deep Space Nine
+toddsmitts "Plot a collision course!" "Woah, woah, woah, woah, wait, wait wait, let me gat to the escape pod first..." "Why? Don't you want to die for the Founders?" "That wasn't exactly in my job's description..."
I don't think any Vorta were on those Kamikaze ships. Even though they are clones, I feel like the Vorta are all genetically engineered to be cowards. They are just courageous enough to fight when the odds are overwhelming with them, but retreat when they aren't. Which is a very safe and simple strategy to program in at a genetic level. And it works well when they are basically omnipotent in the Gamma Quadrant, but in the Alpha Quadrant they lack re-enforcements.
when you're discussing the relative size of the ship you continually bring up that the crew complement is too small for its size. I would say you need to consider the difference between crew and carrying capacity. it probably doesn't take a lot of crew to operate but I'm sure it was designed to carry squads of gem Hadar for ground assault.
I don't think they're windows. The bridge has no viewscreen. Vorta and Jemhardars do not care about aesthetics, or looking out in space. Those might be exposed sensor.
It's interesting to me that this ship can destroy a Galaxy class ship and yet can be destroyed by a Runabout. (BTW, the Romulan/Cardassian task force called these ships "Jem'Hadar fighters" in DS9: The Die Is Cast.)
+Darin Wagner Is it obvious? The first Director LEVELED his toon on star trek online. Then the ones after had basic gear and where fighting 30 levels higher then their current rank.
+Darin Wagner That kamikaze run into the USS Oddysey was a shocking moment at the time though. SFDebris refers to it as DS9 saying how this new enemy could even destroy the Enterprise if they wished. By destroying what we had grown to see as the epitome of the Federation. Of course thinking about it the Galaxy class was not all that invulnerable really. When a Miranda/Soyuz nudging a nacelle can destroy it as well. Maybe the Tie Fighter reference in the episode above is quite accurate as well. Packing a major punch, but very much lacking in defence and very much disposable. Of course this also issued in how much more of an action/small ship focus DS9 would take. How many had pretty much forgotten about Birds of Prey until Martok and co used them in so much of the Dominion arc. Defiant/Bug Ship/BoP. With the bigger ships providing cover or openings for these to shine.
I just thought it was interesting that this ship, which was introduced as such a badass, could be destroyed with its shields up by a well-aimed phaser strike from what amounts to a souped-up shuttlecraft.
Thats true. Alas one of the bug bears with later Trek in general. Voyager was possibly even worse. Be it actual shuttles shotting down Kazon. Or Voyager itself being able to best Borg etc. It could get somewhat hand waved off with claims of good shooting and hitting the weaker area. As they talk about some aspects being well armoured and having a weak underbelly in a very insect fashion. But yeah. I do agree with it being a pain. Similar argument as to the Dominion battles that seem to have no shields at all. When Mirandas get one shot or those Cardassian Weapon Sats...
Why is it that every design that Star Trek Online tries to reimagine turns out looking crap? I hate the new bug and I hated the alternate Stargazer too! Great episode guys, I used to imagine the bugs size was around that of the defiant's...
I think the main problem is the texturing. Even classic designs look poor because of the textures, they don't have a good design team in place to create free flowing designs in keeping with canon designs, sto designs and variants look messy, cluttered and disproportionate. It's a shame really.
I like a lot of them. Obviously I won't like all of them, just like in the TV series' I don't like EVERY ship design. If you're talking about their clarity and resolution I can agree with you, but as far as actual design. I like quite a few of them,
Lets really look at the ship. first off why would there be windows. the Jem’he’dar don’t care about sight seeing. and only the Vorta and the 1st have viewing devices. second it is small because they don’t require sleep so no personal quarters. they don’t eat so no galley. Third they are small so they can be built quikly
-You can't really tell the scale of the ship by the windows...they are very deceiving. The windows can be so many different sizes. -The glowing section on the main body is likely just a massive heat sink for a large warp core and impulse system that are crammed really close together. -NOTE: The attack ship likely didn't have torpedo tubes. In DS9 Jem hadar while we see torpedoes the First Officer says they are using a phased poleran beam. The only other episode (Starship Down) where a torpedo is lodge in Defiant is the only time it's suggested the attack ship has torpedoes. Every other time but this it fires beams only. -NOTE. Other than Odyessy, Defiant is the only Federation ship ever seen firing on an enemy Dominion ship in the whole series.
Yes but we never see it fire that torpedo. And they never fire a torpedo ever again in that episode. In other words it was just for the sake of the Quark Plot.
never rely liked this ship .... its ok but i find it not consistent with what i think a sharp shifter ship should look like..... and when the defiant took the jem-hadar ship off the planet in G quadrant it looked smaller than the defiant :) bit od for size like ..... but still good work guys
Fighter?? Did u guys actually watch the entire Domion war? The Domion Attack Craft is not too much smaller than Defiant sized. There was an entire episode "Rocks and Shoals" where one crash landed intact with a founder hiding onboard. Most of the episode took place on that Domion ship. The only difference was lack of amenities viewscreen etc because; Jem Hadar obviously.
The Dominion probably just numbered them. No point in naming disposable ships
Not only that, but naming a Dominion ship would go against their theme of conformity.

The windows are wrong. I just watched A time to stand. Dax and O'brien talk about there being no view ports.
No, they missed them because the windows are invisible, ha ha
My favorite bad guy ship. The Attack Ship is the Dominions Defiant.
just way less powerful.
landfair123
More like their B'rel class
I'm sure that Sisko and others commented that Dominion ships don't have, or need, windows. That fan pic is plain wrong...

Surprised you're not a fan of DS9. I always thought it was the strongest of all the Star Trek shows.
It is in terms of consistent story telling.
i think these ships are purple because the dominion are intergalactic pimps. ergo purple pimp ships.

I don't think of the Jem'hadar as window people.

It's only about 5* the size of the Peregrine fighter, so In my mind it could still /perhaps/ be a fighter.
The size makes sense if you think of it as an assault transport as well.
the fan image with many windows, good points. only works as a scaled up version.
standard crew for a Jem'Hadar Attack Ship is 42 Jem'Hadar and 1 Vorta

In the Star Trek Armada III game mod, the ship is called a Scarab-class. I doubt that is official but it sounds good.

I think they do have to have Vortas on-hand. I don't think the Jem'Hadar first could be trusted with distributing the Ketracel White.
First shot looks like the studio model, so those look like windows, because they're lit up in the episode...
To the Founders the Vorta and Jem'Hadar are all cannon fodder. So I figure that there is a Vorta in every attack wing.

Jem'hadar ships don't have living quarters, Well maybe one for the volta maybe, they don't eat or sleep so long as they get their white they are fine.
June bug warriors
Why not Corvette?
I see a beetle in it...
To me looks more like a stinkbug
It's 90meters
They said in 'the ship' there wasn't any windows.
The JEM'HADAR type Strike Fighter
Vorta are clones so they are expendible
always thought a great Federation fighter would be the ship that data flu and Star Trek insurrection
Cryptic's Dominion Attack ship makes me think it's a Covenant ship from the 'Halo' game franchise.
+Ricardo Warner yea they look like they have a poor design team
I like a lot of them. Obviously I won't like all of them, just like in the TV series' I don't like EVERY ship design. If you're talking about their clarity and resolution I can agree with you, but as far as actual design. I like quite a few of them,
Jem'Hadar do not need windows at all
Lets really look at the ship. first off why would there be windows. the Jem’he’dar don’t care about sight seeing. and only the Vorta and the 1st have viewing devices. second it is small because they don’t require sleep so no personal quarters. they don’t eat so no galley.
+saquist One of these ships did attack the Defiant with a torpedo in the episode "Starship Down" when it got embedded in the bulkhead of the mess hall
Yes but we never see it fire that torpedo. And they never fire a torpedo ever again in that episode. In other words it was just for the sake of the Quark Plot.
never rely liked this ship .... its ok but i find it not consistent with what i think a sharp shifter ship should look like..... and when the defiant took the jem-hadar ship off the planet in G quadrant it looked smaller than the defiant :) bit od for size like ..... but still good work guys
jem hadar dont use windows
Fighter?? Did u guys actually watch the entire Domion war? The Domion Attack Craft is not too much smaller than Defiant sized. There was an entire episode "Rocks and Shoals" where one crash landed intact with a founder hiding onboard. Most of the episode took place on that Domion ship. The only difference was lack of amenities viewscreen etc because; Jem Hadar obviously.
can you do the simitar I think that's how you spell it from Star Trek nemisis
