Absolutely wicked review. Very relevant, all I could ask for really! I've just bought one of these B-stock from BOP and currently waiting on its arrival.
@@EverettDudgeon138 Auch! That's pretty bad, it kind of kills a lot of potential! Anyway, I ordered one yesterday, 800 euros is still a great price for a complete drum workstation like this one.
This is a cool vid, nice to see the SP16 in action using it in a way I may use it (if I had one). Are you really going to replace the Digitakt? Or do you have something in mind to use the two machines together? Gonna look through your other vids now.
@@ThesisOfSyn Yeah, I can see from the vid how it offers a bit more. I use the Digitakt for all my sequencing so for that it's basically irreplaceable at the mo. I've heard the SP16 isn't that great as a sequencer for other gear. Well, I'll find it out soon as I came across a good deal on used one yesterday! I'm hoping the two machines will somehow work well together...
Yes it has! It’s now my main drum sequencer. I used it a fair bit for sample manipulation when I first got it but the onboard effects just didn’t cut it. It was fun exploring ways to get my desired sound and ending up with something completely different though. But in the real world of making and finishing tracks its best feature is the sequencer. It’s so quick to program drum breaks and the 4 outs give me a mono kick, mono clap/snare and stereo precision to record into the DAW with the kick and snare having the DSI filter and drive it I want it
I didnt get on with the octatrack. The workflow was really confusing and it was so easy to just delete everything by mistake. The SP16 is so straight forward and basic. It has its quirks but still it was easy and quick to learn with no funny suprises
Have you got the SP-16 clocked to a DAW? Just got one and it’s not synching with Logic X, which is pretty annoying! Did you experience any synching issues?
Yes it synced up straight away both via DIN to the mpc and usb to logic/protools/Ableton . Do you have the correct midi settings on the sp for it? Go to settings>midi in and pick usb as the clock source
@@ThesisOfSyn thanks. Got the settings right. Which OS are you on? So far Pioneer “can’t replicate the issue” but they’re on El Capitan with Logic 10.2.4!
@@ThesisOfSyn yep. It’s totally out of synch. I can just about get it close enough for jazz with a twenty odd ms delay but as soon as logics cycle loops back to zero it’s done for. I guess it’s something dodgy in the firmware. I’ll try installing 1.6 again and if that doesn’t fix it I’ll have to return it. 😏
yo Bredda .... Great vid by the way ... so I'm thinking of getting Toraiz ,but i just need to know if it's possible to make 8 bar loops , going by the photos i can only see button for 4 bars ? I there a way to create 8 bar drum patterns ?
Hi mate, the only way i get around doing 8 bar loops is by halving the bpm meaning you have effectively an 8 step sequence instead of a 16 step one. Not ideal i know
@@flavatech5938 that’s a hard one. The sp has the prophet 6 drive which sounds great however the mpc has much better effects and those vintage emulation plugins. For precision I’d say the mpc.
Hey, so i use the sp16 clocked to the MPC so the sequencer runs in sync with the MPC. The MPC takes care of all the midi note information for the synths too. Im using the SP16 as more of a sketch pad for drum programming while the MPC is more of a centre piece for the hardware
@@Saint_Grial yea man it’s more about flavours. The workflow is like a simplified mpc with a Roland step sequencer with basic Elektron trig conditions....and a prophet filter.....with drive..
Seriously we need to organize a coordinated push so pioneer dj realize how many people love this thing. it sounds so good and is so to the point.
So true! I just uploaded a new SP video yesterday aswell using the sequencer. Hands down the best drum sequencer I’ve used
Have you played with the Tr8 or the s much?
@@grazstarr Come to the Toraiz section on Pioneer's forum. It could use more activity forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/200467403-TORAIZ
The Toraiz is surely a future classic. Loved seeing it used for some lovely liquid vibes ✌️
bought one recently. incredible device. never sell it
video felt like we were hanging out, very well done.
I love my sp16. Awesome machine in the right hands.
Great demo and review, and a dope beat. Makes me want to go from thinking aboutnit to ordering.
just picked one up for $649....cant wait for it to arrive, I used to love jammin on the rs7000 so this should be fun.
Did you like it? 🤔

lol love how you said to get rid of the box before the misses is back haha "huh? what new gear? that was always there!"
I feel this has A LOT of potential for NiN type industrial. Damn,
Fun video, thanks! Three samplers, man you make me feel much better about my own obsession with music hardware. :D
I think just one more firmware update and this thing would be perfect.
Exactly! I’d like an envelope for the filter and a couple more fx additions, mainly reverb type and stereo delay.
@@ThesisOfSyn Real time midi input, arpeggiator etc.
@@EverettDudgeon138 it has these no?
@@ThesisOfSyn For midi it doesn't have real time polyphonic input from an external midi keyboard.

Dope video, reminds me a bit of the sequencial studio 440 sampler from 1986, another dave smith legend.
Smelling the manual! Kin got me man, brilliant stuff.
Nothing like the smell of a new manual, agreed 🤣
now that they've discontinued the SP-16 you regret selling yours ..it's ok, come clean friend😹

Yes it has! It’s now my main drum sequencer. I used it a fair bit for sample manipulation when I first got it but the onboard effects just didn’t cut it. Great video. So much time doing less stuff! My sentiment about my MPC One in a nutshell!!!
you can turn off preview if you dont want to hear the last sample selected!
If you had to choose from SP 16 or MPC Live 1/2 or One Plus. Which one w u choose..?
i have a hardware synthesizer. can i play the midi notes into the toraiz from my synth
When would you use this instead of the Octatrack? Or for which use cases would you prefer the Octatrack?
