    I learned so much from your video, thank you!! Please PLEASE do more fern care vids! There are so many beautiful indoor ferns available out there and not much information on how to care for them! I know because (somehow) I've ended up with like a dozen different types of ferns and I'm freaking out. Love you, love your videos!

This comment just blew my mind and made my day💚 I already have the next 3 videos scheduled because I am going out of town and didn't want to leave you guys hanging but I will make sure the 4th one is ferns for you! What are some of the ferns you have or specific struggles so I can make sure I include some of them for you? ☺💚

      @@thatawkwardplantgirl Just subscribed! The ferns I'm struggling most with are some young Dryopteris. They're so FLUFFY & I LOVE THEM!!! I saw a big variegated Boston fern the other day at an upscale nursery and started having chest pains because it was so beautiful in person. Another fern I worry about is my precious Heart Fern, one of my favorites!! I have a silver lace fern and a blue star fern, also a juvenile staghorn. If any of them expire I will freak out XD I'll keep an eye on your channel!

    I have a blue star fern that I almost thought was beyond saving, I think the roots might have been eaten by collemboles. I figured I could try to remove the dead parts and put the little pieces with surviving leaves in a bag with sphagnum moss or something... But haven't done anything yet and now I saw it grown a green root thing! I'm gonna watch this for ideas on how to try to save it :)

    Nice video. Have a Boston Fern not popping. It's in a 12" diameter large pot. All the middle is barren. Seems the roots are circular around edge of pot. I want to repot with airy soil mix. Do you recommend coconut lining the pot and planting within that to help retain moisture.

    Great video! I'm a novice and just learned a lot to help my very first ferns. I have one in the bathroom under indirect sunlight, the other is hanging in my kitchen. After watching your video, I checked on my new ferns and noticed the hanging basket did not have a drain hole, yet the plant looks healthy which puzzled me. Should I drill a small hole anyway?

    • @thatawkwardplantgirl
      @thatawkwardplantgirl  3 года назад

      Thank you so much Ann! So glad my video helped you! Most plant parents need drainage holes because they are new to knowing how and when to water or their mix will stay to wet to long...it is all up to your personal preferences and habits. Whatever works for you. If you feel they need drainage holes then definitely go for it..your ferns are hearty and a repot won't cause them any issues if that is what you decide☺ I personally tend to overwater and the medium the nursery plants come in does not work long term in my very humid environment so that is why I have drainage holes and repot my ferns but your situation may be different then mine so go with what you feel is best. I would also check if they are in a nursery pot inside a pot without drainage..a lot of stores have been doing that lately ☺👍

    So would you suggest not putting it in a hanging planter? Or is it fine if it has the right size pot?

    • @thatawkwardplantgirl
      @thatawkwardplantgirl  2 года назад +2

      a hanging planter is great for ferns it is just less humidty higher up(because heat rises and humidty evaporates or stays lower) and it will dry out more because of that heat so by all means hang it you will just have to be aware of it's conditions and probably give it more attention 👍 if it's a maidenhair fern it might need a higher humidty compared to a Boston fern that can handle a slightly lower humidty level💚

    • @thatawkwardplantgirl
      @thatawkwardplantgirl  2 года назад +2

      Yes trim off all the crispy bits because it can become a home for pests and give it indirect bright light and a minimum of 40% humidty maximum 75% humidty to get it to push new growth for you💚 it is a very resilient fern though and should grow back fairly quickly👌☺

      @@bwolf0003 no problem! Thanks for watching! I agree unless it's in a heater draft area or closer to a heat source that may be drying it out faster..my lemon button did die off quite a bit(about half if I recall correctly) when I first brought it home so I do believe some acclimation loss is normal with them💚 Boston ferns do tend to have bigger fronds(in most cases) so they handle humidty loss and less watering slightly better then a lemon button.. just like a lemon button handles it slightly better then a maidenhair👍its just how much they can hold vs what they have to tolerate

    • @thatawkwardplantgirl
      @thatawkwardplantgirl  2 года назад +1

      What kind of fern? You generally can cut it back all the way(deadhead the plant) and it should grow back just fine if the root ball in healthy.. the side growing more might be getting better light or are you concerned about rot? Ends dying is usually a humidity or watering issue👍if you cut away all the green it will take a while to get big again because it's the foliage that feeds the plant. Any new growth?

      It's actually sort of a myth that they dont😅 in the very north(WA state USA where I am located) in winter time most plants struggle and need supplemental light but for about half the year a north window is perfect..sometimes even to much☺💚 above the equator north has less light and south has the most but below the equator it is reversed and north has stronger light while south has less. I am not an expert(in film or plants) and I never claim to be. I just share what I have learned in my experiences and those others I have discussed this topic with in the plant communuty. RUclips is a social media site and I would reccomend searching for the "experts" in the published research papers found in most horticultural society sites and college research sites. Anywhere else is usually botanists and hobbiests having fun not truly sharing "expert" scientifically proven information. I do not run a lab to run experiments or publish scientific research. I just enjoy plants in my home and share that here. A lot of it is common sense backed by experiences. For example I live in pnw and see ferns in direct light while we are told these same fern species are to be kept in low light in our homes via blogs. Anyone can see that is wrong information. I just test these things in my home to see if my theory is correct and share here what I learn. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding and I appreciate your time.
