He wore black contacts as an tribute to Method Man because he performed this on the anniversary of Method Man's debut solo album where he wore similar contacts on the album cover. And his hair is messy like that as a tribute Ol Dirty Bastard
The album this song is on is known for having little samples. The best produced album ive ever heard has some of the best jazz musicians of the modern era all over it.
Kendrick always says he's a child of the 70's. And it reflects in most of his music. He is very much influenced by soul and funk music 🎶🎶. I love that about him. His use of samples encourages people to seek out the original songs. Thus keeping those old-school classics alive 😊
Fun fact: Kendrick wore black eye contacts that night as a tribute to the 20th anniversary of Method Man's album Tical. His hair and eye contacts in this performance were taken from a music video from one of the songs on the album.
hiphop = sampling. Without it, it wouldn't exist. I do kinda understand ones view on sampling when not really familiar with hiphop, but once you understand, you understand. Hiphop started in the bronx where dj's would extend drumbreaks and people started eventually rhyming over it. The origin of hiphop is sampling and it always has been relevant in hiphop. Of course nowadays there are also a lot of wack samples, but these are mainly samples of hits that already exist just to have their own song also do well to earn more money. I'd say that that is the only downside of sampling.
I totally hear you. Listening to old school hiphop.. they use samples in different ways (speed up, slow down) and they use songs I've never heard! So cool
in my opinion the best live performance on any late night show was when de la soul went on fallon a couple months ago. Kind of a tribute to a member of the group who had passed away earlier this year. Literally gives me chill's to hear that beat done with live instruments. Rip dave. Rip j dilla. The problem with the "who's better" argument is time. Had Biggie KNOWN that the track was going to Em and knowing how lyrically technical Em is; would he have written the same?
This is one of the lowest listened to song on the record on Spotify. I don’t get it. It’s possibly Top 3 and this live performance is THE greatest SNL performance. I’ll fight anyone over that claim.
Funny part about the guy saying "I would use that part of my name as a rap name -- Duckworth" is that there is already a rapper named Duckwrth (w/o the O) lol. He's also really really dope to listen to as a rapper who leans more towards contemporary eclectic sounds. Highly recommend his newest album "Chrome Bull."
If you’re talking about the introduction of vulnerability in hip hop, the major shift was Kanye West. When he dropped his debut album (the College Dropout) in 2004, it was a big counterpoint to the gangster/bravado/macho image that dominated mainstream hip hop. He released his fourth album (808s & Heartbreak) in 2008, and that is essentially the blueprint for the direction rap took in the 2010s, particularly with respect to sound, vocal performance and the vulnerability of the subject matters.
LISTEN TO WELSEYS THEORY! It is on the same album as this song but it is * in my opinion* kendricks best song. The production on it is absolutely mental. would looooveeee for you to react to it!
this is huge george clinton and thundercat they produced almost everything. Thundercat is like Midas for music everything he touches turns to gold. There are a lot of samples on TPAB but real music and original production dominates the whole thing. Check it out.
18:07 welp... some hip hop artists aren't writing their own stuff. That's the blurring line. And boy is it more blurred now than ever. Before AI, star rappers were secretly using ghostwriters and... probably more common in rap than poetry because of the financial returns for dozens of people including the artist, labels, producers, etc... so there's a tone of inauthentic crap out there in hiphop that could never pass as poetry even if the the artist claiming it actually wrote it. That line is definitely ever-blurring.
Tooo much focus on the instruments and shallow observations from guy on the left. Like, I understand the fascination, but would’ve been nice to know what thoughts were about the actual lyrics and overall vibes. Some channels fall way too far into technicality and it becomes detached and kind of boring… like watching an a.i describe what having a soul is like.

He's still a nice guy unless your name is Drake.
It's been awhile. Hope you can get back to the rap reactions@@BandHouseStudios
Meet The Grahams is a lovely song 😃

The half undone hair, the Isley sample, the black contacts, the church shoes. This is fantastic.
Love all of it

Isley brothers “who’s that lady” flip
Kendrick been killing all his grammy performances since 2014 with Coldplay
Saw that while editing this video! Thanks :)
with Imagine Dragons?
18:36 "I wonder if its a Compton thing?" is a valid question, but the sincerity still made me chuckle 😂
TPAB is known for having very little sampling and much more original instrumentation. There’s only a few in the album

It is an Isley brothers sample. That Lady. It's just played live. Lol

Also Ronald Isley literally sings the part of god earlier in the album.
