Mind blown. As someone who is not a die hard Trump fan or a Trump delusionist, this is probably the first time I've listened to someone make a coherent analysis of Trump and his policies / thoughts. Great interview
I agree to the extent this is the closest I've seen to an actual intellectual argument for Trump. And it's profoundly self-delusional. Trump one was a fiasco for the Republican party and America. Trump two will be a catastrophe for the world.
As someone who went to grad school listening to WRM’s Conversations With History on RUclips ~15ish years ago, it’s so great to see him make an appearance on this podcast for some sober analysis of current events. His students are lucky to have him!
Best, most reasonable anaylsis on what and how Trump is doing in foreign policy. High time we all began to look at matters this way instead of allowing ourselves to be spun blindfolded, at least for those who have now been Never Trumpers for 8+ years.
Dan, I love the Call Me Back podcast. It’s a must listen for me and I really appreciate that you interview people with a relatively wide range of viewpoints (especially true when interviewing Israelis it seems to me). I am not a Trump supporter, but I am also not of the Left having supported mostly Republicans for most of adult life until 2016 (I am 56). I agree much of the foreign policy establishment is often slow and compromised by “group think”. There was much to criticize the Biden Admin for both on Ukraine and the Israel/ Gaza war not to mention Afghanistan. That all said, this was a disappointing episode for me. Sure, Trump might do things that are against the norm but how that could lead Walter Russell Mead to consider Trump a “genius” is beyond me. He sounds like someone who has been red-pilled and I felt like I was re-watching the movie, Being There. : ). Trump is not the first person to consider the important of Greendland for goodness sakes. Jonah Goldberg was writing about it back when Trump was still bedding a pornstar with his newly born son at home being cared for by his wife. And does threatening Finland the way Trump is doing it good for the U.S.? It it good to bully our friends and often not our enemies? Trump promised “hell to pay” if Hamas did not release the hostages and instead he bullied Bibi into taking a questionable deal. With respect to Putin, no one can decipher exactly why Trump appears to have a mancrush on Putin. Maybe he (Trump) just thinks its cool the way Putin kills or jails people. Maybe its because it was dirty Russian money that invested in Trump’s properties when he could not get a loan from an American bank. Maybe it’s something else or maybe its none or some of that. H.R. McMaster said he could not figure it out so I don’t think Mead has figured it our either, but to dismiss anyone who questions Trump’s judgment when it comes to Putin and other dictators as suffering from TDS, is just intellectually dishonest and its own version of TDS. I totally understand you do not invite folks on your show to argue with them and that you likely have a lot of respect for Mead. That said, I have seen you push back on other folks (diplomatically) and thought Mead said enough questionable stuff that maybe you would.
Not too, too long ago Napoleon Bonaparte was the center of attention -- one of the memorable world-wide wars as a period of human history can be called the Napoleonic Wars. In the history of European life, Otto von Bismarck developed contending principalities into a 'great power' empire. Will we recall in history the Trumpian Age, or will trumpery affairs carry this day?
When WRM says Trump’s goal is to consolidate and accumulate power, he has finished his lecture about Trump. Power hungry, insane, unprincipled. INSANE.
Mr Mead is very insightfu and knowledgeable but in light of recent events I contend some of his views on Israel and its new strategic opportunities and strengths are unimaginative. His assessment that the sunni Arabs are less likely to accept Israel because of the Gaza war is giving their concern for the street more weight than is accurate and that the sunni Arabs have less reason to align with Israel because it "defeated" Iran ignores that they know Iran is not finished and remains their primary threat.
Trump understands how much power the president of the US yields and uses it . He also doesn’t have any filter or limits .He also knows how to wing it on the fly .He is a genius as the president as an individual he’s a looser. He is miles ahead in his mind of other people. Some of what people want happens to fit in to his personal dislikes or his agenda
I think its delusional to think that Hamas winning the war doesn't change anything geo-politically. If you think the Saudis, Iranians, Egyptians and Turks aren't looking at Israel obvious weakness and thinking new thoughts then youre probably part of the reason we lost in the first place
Usually love your interviews. I had to turn this one off almost immediately. To say that Trump is not a Putin "fanboy" (the Professor's word, not mine) is ridiculous. After that, and with no challenge or push back from you, I had to turn it off. Whatever may have come next about actual geopolitics was lost because he started off so incredibly biased. Not your best work.
The best issue so far. I agree with the professor on everything, except for the relocation of the Gazans. 1.5M divided by 2 or more (countries) will not yield a significant inner political change in those countries.
@@timurtruman - not great for Egypt either. The shanty towns on the Nile between Cairo and Luxor are dominated by the MB. The biggest town there, asyut, only has a pop of about 750k. Perhaps splitting them between 20 countries would work but a significant percentage will be pro Hamas/MB, which is trouble. Iraq would be a good location. They could use more sunni Arabs. Or, it might reignite isis. Still, it would be trouble for the Iran regime, which is good, IMHO.
@ of course, the more countries receive them the better, and we should keep their religio-political makeup in mind, but let’s not make perfect be the enemy of good. Egypt and Jordan are good options as they are. Make the right proportions and gradual (not all at once) relocations.
@@timurtruman - "of course". I'm glad you think it's so simple. I deployed three times to Iraq and Afghanistan and found there was a reason COIN was referred to as the "graduate level of war". In any case, the discussion was about Egypt and Jordan. Any sizable relocation of Palis there would be de-stabilizing and against the best interests of the US and of Israel. Other suggestions sound foolish as well. Albania? Do you recall how much hard work FBI, other US three-letters and allies did there and in Macedonia to clear out AQ cells post 9/11?

Hey Dan. You and your quests have taught more about the Israeli experience and perspective than I ever knew.
Superb analysis.
Walter's students are blessed to have such a professor.
Thank you for having him and making his analysis accessible.
What an incredible analysis!! So grateful for this assessment of Trump and the Middle East!
So grateful for this channel
The best ever
Fabulous interview
Big Fan of WRM
Please have him back on❤
Such a smart professor, wow!
Wow mind blowing golden nuggets here. One of the most insightful conversations I’ve heard on this topic.
An excellent analysis - the best I've seen in a podcast in recent years.
Good stuff. Thank you Dan.

This is about as sober as a white russian. A monologue of delusions and wishful thinking.
One of the best guests you’ve had on 👏🏽
This was an excellent episode, great down to earth and wise assessments, thank you again Dan for this great talks.
So illuminating. This was brilliant
He's dead on about the reality of the ME being a condition to endure not a problem to solve.
What a wonderful teacher
A very sober analysis
I wish all the talking heads in the US would listen to this
Great. Thank you
Great interview. Thank you!

Very informative!
Superb and thought-provoking. There is actually a strategy behind Trump’s agenda, and thanks to WRM it can be explained.

That was mind blowing to me, in a good way. Learned allot.

WRM is always realistic.

One of the great analysts of global geopolitics of our time.
Iran is a “paper tiger” but it is running a nuclear protocol and it is getting closer by the day to achieve it !
