Hi! Here is a response from our Myofunctional Therapist Amy:
First, I'd recommend a speech therapy evaluation. There are multiple factors that can cause feeding delays and a speech therapist can help give tailored recommendations for your child to succeed. That being said, I usually recommend long chew tubes. I really like ARK's hollow, textured grabbers. The hollow form is great for you to put in things like pretzel sticks or veggie straws for an added crunch when practicing. You could also dip it in a puree like applesauce or yogurt. Something like a chewy tube is also great for this. I would get a grabber or chewy tube on the softer side, not a tough one. Encourage your child to put the chewy to the side of her mouth to practice lateralizing her tongue, which will help her lateralize and chew her food. Here is the link to that chew: www.arktherapeutic.com/arks-textured-grabber-p-tube-hollow-chew-tool/

Thanks for reaching out! We understand your concern, as feeding challenges can be difficult to manage. Chewing and swallowing are very complex tasks! Flavor and texture preferences may arise when there are negative reactions to meals (e.g., a gag reflex in response to food). Without seeing your nephew it's hard to make thorough recommendations. It may be worth continuing your search into finding a qualified occupational therapist or speech language pathologist in your area to fully address his your nephew's needs. You can also look into finding a therapist outside your community that provides telehealth or virtual therapy!

I know my comment is late but still.. Does he have a tongue tie because some doctors say that with tongue tie a baby can have sleep apnea and sleeping with the mouth open which leads to poor unrestorative sleep which can cause hyperactivity in children and that can sometimes be mistaken as ADHD.. a strong gag and not wanting to chew is also a symptom of a tongue tie
