I was watching Richard Gene the Fishing Machine do a video on RUclips on bluegill. He was releasing some large bluegill. He stated that fish are like people some are naturally bigger or smaller than others, and when we release the larger fish that we are releasing fish that have a larger gene profile and they will reproduce fish with a large gene profile yielding larger fish. I support this theory and I also enjoy eating big bluegill and big crappie.

I live in Wisconsin. We have no size limit and a daily bag limit of 25 pan fish in total including Crappie. I agree with your desire to preserve the great resource we have. I set my own limit of keeping only fish between 8.5 “ and 10.5 “ and keep only 20 fish per day (when I have a good day of fishing). 40 filets provides a number of meals for my wife and I or a feast for my small family. Most fishermen love to teach their grandkids about fishing. Teaching them to preserve the resource is the most important part of that education. Catch and release is amazing too! Safe travels. @@victortenorio5023 l wish I could give you some amazing info, but I struggle with the same problem. You might look at Lake-Link.com, in their lake info section. It might provide what pan fish are present in each lake. I usually have my best Crappie fishing in northern WI. Tight lines!
Brandon, I grew up in Murray, Kentucky and we fished both Barkley and Kentucky Lakes in the 70’s. The limit was 60 fish with no size limit. Those were the early spider rigging days with crappie rigs and minnows. We would take home two limits most of the days and clean them. I live in middle TN and fish at some of the same lakes (and brush piles) that you fish. I have one of the Vexus AVX 1980c boats that have the wider fronts and the two seats up front, and a BSB 360 Pro with spot lock and Livescope. I can catch limits pretty consistently. There are just two of us at home and we don’t eat fish often enough to empty the freezer. I started giving away fish at the boat ramp (bank fishermen with minnows usually will take fish). Later, I started just keeping up with keepers with a counter and throwing them back. Brandon, I like your idea of taking six fish home. That will work well for us too … and don’t keep the biggest ones. Love your channel.
I know you're a Tennessee resident if you and your family ever go to Pigeon forage TN. Stop by the old mill and buy a bag of southern catfish breading or big Al's catfish breading to use on them crappie...Absolutely Delicious!!!

Im in NC now but used to live in SC back in the 80-90s SC used to be 40 per day, they've lowered it to 20 , man I'm recovering from a major back surgery and like I've said before I love your Crappie fishing videos. I agree with you on limits. I believe that there is a point when you get a feeling that you have caught enough. We are just in a worldly society that we deserve to catch more before someone else does.
I live in Alabama and we have a 9 inch size limit and a 30 a day creel limit. I wish they would go to a 10 inch size limit and a 15 or 20 creel limit. Back in the day I can remember when there was no size limit and when there was one put in place everyone was complaining about not being able to keep many fish but in a years time you were catching better quality fish. I live in PA and yes - creel limit is 50 per day and no length limit. I rarely can catch 50 in a day but it is possible- I also will not keep anything under 9.5”. Keep the crappie videos coming !!

Love your videos. In fact I added active target 2 instead of livescope on our new boat because i was so accustomed to watching your videos. Fish many of the same lakes you do ( our farm is in Petersburg TN). You have really helped me and my son catch a lot of crappie. Im a life long stream fisherman but crappie are a new conquest for me.

Your videos are very entertaining. I love to fish for crappie but do not use high dollar fish finders just try to find spots and fish them. I would love to better my crappie skills in the fall and learn how to catch and find them when they are in deeper water. Would love to see how you fish 25 plus depth and find them with only a mid level depth finder

Just got the 7'2 light action rod. It is a super light weight rod. Been using the Sam's super sensitive rods but this one may quickly become my new favorite.

@@2005Pilot I pick up up enough to eat in Lake Tarpon…..I have caught some nice blue gill as well….11” 1 1/4 lb👍 they have several lakes in central florida. Are you not finding them? I use various artificial plastic jigs and hand ties….minnows are great. 👍🇺🇸 I use a slip cork and change it to various depths until I snag a few 🎣

I totally understand. I have a 1199 bird on the console and a garmin livescope on the front. I’m getting better with it but just not dialed in yet. My boats at Tim’s Ford power sport getting my power poles and live wells fixed. Maybe I’ll get it back in a month or so and get back at it. Thank you.
@@CurtisCreson-bd9qe I’m not real familiar with garmin but there is a lot of good info out there on setups and such on RUclips. Biggest thing is to use it, and if it’s mounted to your trolling motor, never take your foot off the pedal, learn to find your jig with the transducer instead of trying to cast in the cone every time. It takes practice but will soon become second nature

Usually keep what wife and I are eating next meal-6 fish. Been tough finding them on 11acre lake last 6yrs so if I catch 10-12 🙏 I’m gonna vac bag some to freeze and eat later
What rods are u using ? And also reels ? Are u using braid also on your casting rod?
In iowa it use to be unlimited and no size limit. A couple of years ago they put a 25 fish limit on. Still no size limit. I however have fish in the freezer and still keep a supply of them, simply because I give more away than we eat. I like giving them to family and friends because they don't have the opportunity to catch them. To each their own I guess.

For some of us due to health reasons, I have no problem keeping the daily creel limits. Keep in mind I don't go but about 5-8 times a year but when I go we limit out each trip. I do feel letting the really big fish go goes help depending on their age. Very similar to a big buck. I have let big bucks go just due to their genetics. I will say though....one a fish or deer reaches a certain age their genetics have been passed on. You get a massive buck that is 5-8 years old his genetics have been passed down. In a case like that he needs to be taken. I have come across carcasses that were true trophies. So.e were lost during tracking but most were just death by old age and disease.

I'm on Lake Murray here in South Carolina, are crappy limit is 20 per day with the size limit of 8 inches. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they went to a 10-inch but I think that 20 per day is pretty fair. That 2.47lb fish was a dandy in anybody's book as far as I'm concerned! 👍

In Louisiana we have a 10” size limit and 25 per day..I love to keep 10 to eat and that is it..let the rest go for another day of fun in the future..I see guys on the water keeping over the limit and could careless about game warden but that is a another story..

Suggestion… I know you don’t like to tell where you are, but could you give some of us out- of-staters an honest short list of good crappie lakes that we could enjoy a time or two in our lifetime? I am disabled and fish 2 to 3 times a week. I live in South Alabama and our limit is 9" and 30 fish. You very rarely catch a 14" fish. I think that is too many Granted we have a wonderful fishery I fish the lakes off of the Mobile River. I caught 80 fish one day last week and only had 11 keepers. I have a question for you. The lakes I fish are tidal lakes and are excellent in the spring and late winter. They become relatively barren in the summer. I have spent hours using Down VU and Side scanning looking for fish and find a few and catch a FEW. Some of the local old timers have told me that they migrate out to the river during the summer. Any validity to this idea?
I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t know. If you can’t find them then I would assume they are migrating as crappie are a schooling fish and they have a hard time hiding. Fish migration is something that is really interesting to me and I think it happens a lot more than we realize. Thanks for watching!

I wish tenn would make the size 11 inch. Simply because of the difference in how much more meat is on an 11 vs a 10.... or especially a 12.

Louisiana it's the same way 50 per day no size limit except on Border lakes with Texas that's way too many fish in my opinion
When I was a kid Perch fishing in Green Bay was amazing. Lots of fun, lots of fish caught. Eventually that fishing was destroyed. I don’t know why. I simple know it was ruined. 60 years later, with daily limits dropped to 5 and I think eventually raised back to15, it is starting to rebuild. All I know is people can screw up what God created. Taking fewer fish home and protecting larger fish makes sense. Yes older fish may simply die, but I don’t think any of us know when that will happen. By the way the population of fishermen is so much bigger now, equipment and information is so much better today. Lower daily limits and size restrictions keep the playing field a little more balanced. Maybe our great, great, great grandkids will be able to catch fish?

different lakes call for different management strategies. for crappie it depends on the crappie mortality and growth rates. those larger 2.5 pound crappie have little to do with recruitment as theyll will more likely be dead in a year or two as most crappie take around 3 years to reach 10" and only live to around 5-6 years.
bluegill are just opposite, take too many of the largest fish in the lake and youll stunt your population. a 10" bluegill will take 7-10 years to grow and will usually reach their sexual maturity at age 7. the larger fish keep the smaller fish in check by not allowing them to mature too quickly since they are a colony species.
my take is keep only what you can eat in a meal or two and release the rest for another day. my self imposed limit on bluegill is only to keep the mid sized fish of the lake and a few smaller ones and maybe a few females as well.
