The most shocking thing about this photo is how many people actually "freaked out" thinking this was a portal or a haunted building before just assuming the most likely outcome that the camera did something weird.
That says a lot about people's overall level of education. Even in the Tech field. And this is in a developed country with a good (as it is considered) education. Imagine what happens in countries with minimal or no education.

My third reaction was “maybe it’s a weird aberration of HDR, although she’d have to have moved her arms incredibly fast.” You debunked that well. Panorama didn’t occur to me, cool!

This is truly worrisome, how so many people are absolutely dependent on things they have very little understanding of. Even the so called "experts" and "geniuses" have no clue how modern phone cameras work.
I’ve been to 7 Apple stores in Europe in 3 days, the covent garden was the busiest of them all, in an hour not one person came to talk to me, and if I started to talk, they just ask if I had an appointment, if not then to make one, no talk.

my s23 ultra does weird things all the time like that, if lighting is poor it does a long exposure then 'decides' what the image will look like. the 'preview' of the image often CHANGES once the computations are done! this story is silly, kudos to you for not just figuring it out, but disseminating the information in a kind way! edit to add: i'm now chuckling thinking about occam's razor...(SUPERNATRAL SHENANIGANS! THAT must be the reason!)

To me I saw the picture this last Saturday and was like okay I just figured it was something wrong with the camera 📸 I don’t get hyped up about this stuff anymore I have seen many unexplained photos cameras have taken over the years and people freak out about lol 😂
The weird thing in this photo is that from the camera perspective, there is no one taking the photo or the iphone itself… Probably another clue to the panoramic photo. Also whom took the picture is a ghost!! 👻
Are we living in the Middle Ages? Some people really are, I guess. Also, there aren’t really any more experts at Apple stores any more. Even though they still have great customer service (compared to the competition), there aren’t really any “geniuses” in my experience. There aren’t local experts solving problems.
Yeah, I also don’t get why people would freak out and feel scared and come up with some insane idea about what happened. But I also have a fairly rational mind so… I did take her at her word that it wasn’t a pano, so just assumed it was a weird HDR glitch - obviously it actually being an accidental pano makes the most sense.
HDR is so fast but the sensor read speed is even faster. The "scanning from left to right" description given to her is extremely misleading. Also camera is held vertically, and I'm guessing the sensor reading is happening from top to bottom (or bottom to top) at that angle. That poor description given to her makes it seem like a good ol' scanner, as if it takes a really long time to take the photo. But let's not forget that she storms into the store saying she won't leave until it is explained. So that behavior possibly changed the tone of her visit. It probably made people who work there just tell her what she wants to hear so she leaves. The a sensor readout speed is incredibly fast, and HDR photo is done extremely quickly that even if she was swinging her arms as fast as she can the photo wouldn't look like this.
This is why you can't believe a single thing MOST people say about strange, inexplicable, paranormal first hand experiences. They lack the knowledge, experience and/or reasoning to even attempt to determine a sound explanation and immediately freak out and jump to the most ridiculous, fantastical conclusions.
Lmao i can tell you the genius’ normally work on macs, they hardly ever get phone related issues cuz the technician will just restore the software if the diagnostics don’t show any issues.

My prediction 2024 iPad Pros will come in space black and include the M3 Pro chip along with the already confirmed oled with LTPO. Maybe even better cameras. What I don’t know, up to 24gb of ram and maybe 4tb storage. I also think the iPad Air 12.9 and 11 inch will get the M3 and the regular iPad and iPad mini will get the A16 Bionic.

Apple just needs to put that panorama symbol on all photos shot in that mode... regardless of whether it's a true panorama.

The iPhone does't have a mechanical shutter so it's electronic front AND back curtain all the time
I used the panorama feature to take a similar photo once so immediately knew what was up.
