I find this method way easier, and makes that last stitch look neater as when I change the color *before* finishing the stitch it tends to look a bit scrunched.

For this particular project, since the reverse side won't be seen, I'm carrying the colors upwards along the back. However, eventually I will weave in the tail end after the last row is made.
