Used is best...brewing it helps to take out the acidity or make it a more neutral pH, however I have used fresh coffee grounds in small amounts and never had any issues! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Jamee!!🪱🪱🪱
😂🤣😂It happens automatically ever since I was in middle school many moons ago!! I see you have the same instinct!! Thanks for watching & for the good laugh!!🪱🪱🪱
Thank you!! As we harvest we pick them out and it would be such a waste not to get to watch them dive back under!! I could watch them for hours on end...very relaxing!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch Lisa!!🪱🪱🪱
The other thing that happens when over feeding, or feeding too often like I did for awhile, the worms do not get around to eating the bedding so it just clumps horribly over time if using cardboard. I still have some cardboard in that state and its not breaking down. Nomatter how much I try to break it up manually, it clumps back together in something similar to clay. Rrrrrrr. Great advice! 👍 🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱
Oh wow!! That is good to know!! Maybe that is why sometimes I get clumps of napkins when I put them in and other times they disappear super fast??!? Thanks for mentioning that, I'm sure there are others folks who will benefit from your experience as well!! Thanks for all your support Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
Awesome!! I'm so excited for you! My biggest lessons learned were feed way less than you think you need to and leave any lid you might have off for the fist 2-3 days with a light on in the room with the bin so the worms settle down. Thanks for the kind words and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Nice to see the outdoor bin patrick. This time i harvested my outdoor bin too. It was ready n wet. The big chunks were put back alongwith the worms. I left some of the castings in the bin n added my hot compost pile to it. And ofcourse not forgetting the scraps. I luv to harvest this bin. As i dont hv to worry about it. I like the smell of the castings. Now i hv to let it dry for sifting.
That's fantastic Sandy!! I love the smell of fresh castings as well!! Always great to harvest a bin and have those rich castings...I let my Tiny Worm Bin castings dry as well, for some reason they always seem to clump up on me at the end. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch your favorite bin & let us know about your harvest!!🪱🪱🪱
I spritz newly added bedding with bottled water mixed with a small amount of molasses. I use a plain sprayer bottle. Throw in a couple handfuls, spray, couple more handfuls, spray, repeat as needed.Depending on the moisture of the food added and dampness level of the bin, I spray the bedding more or less. I also remove most of the peel/skin from fruits, stems also. They could be consumed, eventually, but I do not like dealing with them LOL. I do chop up the food, occasionally process certain foods.
I really like the you parameters are directly tied to the micro herd in your bins. Worms don't eat the food, the microherd does, if there isn't a sufficient population, anerobes will explode !! Btw I have no idea what I just said is true 🤣 Might be a good worban legend topic though lol Cheers Brother Jason and Colleen 🌱🪱🤞👍🤜🤛
Well if it was a batting average it would be really good!! Worms eat the food...and the microbes that are all over them but get most of their nutrients from the microbes...not too far from what our micro biomes in out guts do for us! Your comments are always entertaining, w-urban legend or not & are 1000% always welcomed!! Let's Go!!🤜🤛🪱🪱🪱
Thank you!! We checked on it a couple of weeks later and it seemed to do fine even in the Florida Summer Heat: ruclips.net/video/-GlF9RW-JUU/видео.html Thanks so much for stopping by to watch, I'll check out your worm channel!!🪱🪱🪱
Great video. I just started a worm bin (red wigglers) around 3 months ago. It is indoors in my basement around 70 degrees F. I have it in a 27 gallon plastic bin with a lid. I drilled holes on the top portion of the bin and the lid for airflow. My biggest issue is that some keep getting out and dying. How do you get your cardboard shredded so small? I probably have not been using enough bedding. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just subscribed and will check out more of your videos. Thanks very much!
Thank you!! I have links to the shredder I use in the pinned comment and in the description of every video. It is a 12 sheet cross cut, micro shredder. It takes corrugated cardboard and absolutely obliterates it into tiny pieces. A 27 gallon bin can be deep which sometimes can trap carbon dioxide down low because it is heavier than Oxygen. Additionally the humidity maybe high as indicated by condensation on the inside sides of the bin. Worms use this moisture as a super highway to explore. You can prevent this by maybe drilling some holes in the sides to get more airflow and like you said, add more bedding. The solution to almost all worm bin issues is add more bedding. You may want to skip a feeding as well if the bin is too moist. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel!! If there is a mistake or issues I’ve probably done it and created a video on it so feel free to explore and ask any questions you might have in a new comment. 🪱🪱🪱
Love to see the babies going to town on the pumpkin stem. Hahah i said doo doo 😂 lots of nutrient variety of food. Yeah that is also of food. They will get it done 👍🏼🪱😁
😀I love how cute all animal babies are!! It heated up a little the first couple of days, but they are all over it now!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
Great question!! Sometimes I'll make worm casting tea right away but most of the time I put them in my storage container which I show how I manage in these videos: ruclips.net/video/WMVNEk57ORs/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/WCevZRPuYug/видео.html Thanks so much for the great question and thanks for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
It's actually one of the trays from my VermiHut worm tower. It came with five & I run four on my system. There's 1,600 1/4 inch holes in them so they work as perfect sifters. Here's the playlist with my VermiHut, worm tower if that interests you: ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV0_jVcRI9rI5xnbAFqNP3WZ_ Thanks so much for the great question and thanks for watching!🪱🪱🪱
Nice Patrick, super big feeding. And huge boost of volume with the shredded cardboard. I haven’t come across black solider fly larvae. Glad you shared you will be adding water to the bin. I’m leaning towards this feeding heating up for you. 😁🪱🪱
May I ask a question: There are a lot of weeds in my garden. If I grind them finely and mix the green ones with the brown ones that have died before, can I give it to the worms as food, thus bringing the nitrogen carbon balance to the ideal ratio?
That sounds like a great idea, especially if you are able to freeze the green ones. Just be sure to give 3-5 times as much bedding (brown ones) to one part green ones. Also feed less than you think you need. Your bin can heat up when you feed weeds and grasses, just be sure to include lots of bedding. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I kept thinking about an old SNL skit when you started to bulk up the bedding (Pumping Up with Hans and Franz). I can hear you saying their line "I'm going to pump you up!" I think one of the signs/dangers of overfeeding is other bin critters get a chance to move in and multiply in larger numbers. By the way, I 'll trade you those BSF larvae for slugs. I found two slugs in one of my bins (which means I may see more in the future!). I just found out slugs eat worms. Ugh. Happy belated Father's Day, Patrick! ~ Sandra
I love Hans & Franz!! My youngest son is a football player/weight lifter/body builder and I'm always saying "I'm here to Pump (clap) You up!! That is a great point about other bin critters blossoming in an overfed bin!! I'm not a fan of slugs, and now knowing they feed on worms the trade is off!!😂🤣😂 Thanks so much for stopping by Sandra!! And thanks for the belated father's Day wishes!! Pass them on to Landon as well!!🪱🪱🪱
This one I keep outside on the ground in some shade. My Urban Worm Bag ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV09Jg8S3xp-08eOoTN21S2Q1 I keep on our back screened in porch. Both my VermiHut ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV0_jVcRI9rI5xnbAFqNP3WZ_ and my Tiny Worm Bin ruclips.net/p/PLimznaPXKV09y9X94Q4aNpNzwUoLoVXug are kept indoors. If I had it my way, I'd have the Urban Worm Bag indoors as well but my wife is a good sport and said if I got the Urban Worm Bag it had to stay outdoors, so I'm keeping my end of the bargain😂 Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment!!🪱🪱🪱
Good morning Patrick ❤ I'm still picking out Worms from Jill's Southside and moving them to the Northside. 4200, so far! My worms are only 2-3", but there's still a lot. Then, again...I keep adding powdered cornmeal and they are multiplying like mad. I'd like to harvest everything and begin again, but I doubt I will have that much patience. And I'm still medicating, so being very careful ❤
Good Morning Peggy!! Whoa you counted a lot of worms!! You've definitely beat my record of counting!! They love to carbo load don't they...Chunky little fellas!! I hope your eyes get back to their normal so you can be as reckless in the garden as you want to be!! It's no fun wondering what caused a reaction, especially here in Florida where everything grows and different new weeds try to take over it seems each year! Thanks so much for stopping by Peggy!!🪱🪱🪱

@@Vermicompost hahaha thanks so much guys 🙏💝 I’m getting better every day, still can’t drive or type lol! But I’m pecking at the phone with one hand 😂😂 much love xx
I plan to start my farm with the stacked 5gal bucket setup that you see everywhere. I don't want to spend a lot of time balancing things. Would it be a good idea to kindof "stage" my feeding? What I mean is I could put my compost scraps and bedding in a container with no worms and give it "some time" to burn out if it's going to heat up, and then, when it's done, give it to the worms? World that be a good idea, or would it be robbing the nutrients or anything that I'm not thinking about?
That sounds like a great set up! I don't think letting food scraps decompose/heat up & cool down in a compost pile first will rob nutrients for the ultimate purpose of feeding your garden but I also don't think you NEED to do it either. If you feed your worms in appropriate amounts according to thier abilites to consume your food scraps, the worms will break the food down much quicker than a stand alone compost pile. In other words, compost worms eat the food scraps before it has the time to decay very much and their digestion speads up the total process of converting food scraps to garden fertilizer/soil amendment. Always star with way less and I mean WAY less than you think they need with regard to food scraps and use more bedding. Here are a couple of videos you may have already seen that show me starting new systems: ruclips.net/video/UsH3k92KhYg/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/g5Sag75OAXY/видео.html You'll see that I barely feed them at first. But I quickly ramp up the feedings as the worms show me how much they can eat. So bottom line, try both ways and see which is more sustainable for you and your patience level...I, in general, take the easy less time consuming way out! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I have a mite problem in my worm bin. Tons of tiny brown looking mites are crawling all over the sides etc, and on a piece of decaying food I noticed hundreds of tiny white dots. Are these white mites too? I threw the piece of food away. How do I keep the mites at bay?
Great question! The mites can be super annoying, even though they are worm bin helpers we are trying to run worm bins, right?!!?😁 The white dots, if they are moving, are most likely mites or possibly springtails if you see them jumping. An explosion of mites or springtails is most likely caused by excessive moisture and/or too much food. So the solution is to try to slowly dry the bin by adding more bedding a bit and feed less. You probably even want to skip a feeding or two. In the short term, you can bait the mites out to bring down their numbers fast while you adjust the over all parameters of your bin. In order to bait the mites out, break off a couple of small pieces of bread and wet them. Then put them right on the top surface of the bin. Come back in 2-3 hours and see if they are covered in mites. If not, give it another couple of hours. When they are covered, throw the bread away or put it in your out door compost and repeat the process to bring the mite population down. Just don't forget the bread in there over night or you will just be feeding them and increasing their population!! You can also do the same thing with banana peels, they love them and wet bread!! Although mites are bin helpers they flourish in slightly more acidic and damp conditions than the compost worms, so when you get a population explosion they can be an indicator that your bin parameter are getting a little out of whack. The solution is less food and more bedding. I hope this helps!! Mite population blooms are common and I'm fight in one right now in my Tiny Worm Bin: ruclips.net/video/LXDTEVWGTEA/видео.html Thanks so much for watching!! And thanks for letting us know about what you are dealing with in your bin!! It's always good to know we're not alone in dealing with issues.🪱🪱🪱
Thanks for watching all the way from Türkiye!! I enjoyed my time there, such a beautiful country, wonderful people and the food was absolutely amazing!!🪱🪱🪱 🇹🇷🇺🇸
This year I've been plucking them out and putting them in my regular compost bin, but for the previous 2 summers I left them in. Without knowing, I put some banana plant leaves in this worm bin that had hundreds of them... It was early in the summer and I didn't want them to overwhelm the bin so I took a bunch out as they grew...here is the video where I first found them: ruclips.net/video/qoVovBqwESQ/видео.html Long story short, I don't mind them but there were a bunch early on in the season...but they absolutely love my regular compost bin. Here is another video I did early on describing BSFL bins versus worm bins: ruclips.net/video/OpBm0SA4Pmo/видео.html Thanks so much for watching & asking a great question!!🪱🪱🪱
I keep waiting for the appearance of the BSFs in my outdoor systems. For all I know they might already be there but so far I have not seen any I think that the one caveat to what you said at @06:30 .... is that certain foods will remain as leftovers & take a really, really long time to get eaten by the worms. So if you find *those* kinds of leftovers then its probably OK to feed more :) Nice build-up of the available space for the system's occupants 👍🏻
I've been waiting as well to see what the time difference in BSFL arrival is between FL & NJ. I think your outdoor bin stays fuller than mine so I maybe able to see them better since I can get to just about every cubed inch (see what I did there ; ) during each feeding. Great point about the long term food or even fast food...my worms would have all the bedding turned into castings if I was waiting for a mango seed to disappear 😂 Thanks so much for stopping by AV!!🪱🪱🪱
My guess is that the BSFs are around here in NJ now that the warmer weather is here. For whatever reason though I have not yet seen them in my outdoor systems. Admittedly though, I have not really gone digging around searching for them :)
@@A-V are the black soldier fly larvae at least good for fishing? They are composters like the worms, so is it real bad if you get a few in there? Being from Minnesota, I've never even heard of them until now.
Good advice, give your bin some time to build the proper attmosphere and numbers to increase the feedings. Did you get the sticker on the avocondo? Have a great day.
Thank you Mikko!! I saw while I was editing that I missed a bunch of avocado stickers!! I'm sure I'll run into them in an upcoming feeding to fish them out. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
This is a real good one and I wanted to send it off to a friend of mine via text. I was watching it on my tablet. I cannot get it on my phone through RUclips. That happens once in a while. Do you know how I could find it so I could send it by text? Am I doing something wrong?
I'm so glad you liked it Cookie! I sent you an e-mail with the link to share with your friend. On my phone I have a little share button with an arrow next to the thumbs up or down button, when I click, it offers me the choice to copy the link then I go from there. I'm not sure it that is similar to your tablet or phone? I'm also going through the RUclips app so not sure if we go through a web browser if that is different...YT glitches for me every so often as well, not getting notifications, comments or replies don't go through, etc. I hope this helps! Thanks for all your support and for sharing my videos!!🪱🪱🪱

It was actually my Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots...so easy and cheap to start up & run!! My Urban Worm bag has a huge pumpkin in it right now...and I'm kinda regretting doing that 😂🤣😂 Autumn got her wish to get the pumpkin out of the freezer but she's regretting what she's seeing...and smelling now!!

Great question!! I do not buy shredded cardboard. I do it all myself with a 5 year old model of this 12 sheet cross cut MICRO shredder: amzn.to/3xYZKYu It is amazing!! It absolutely obliterates corrugated cardboard boxes. In fact I got my mom one and she shreds her boxes for me as well. Whatever shredder you get make sure it is 12 sheet to be able to easily handle the cardboard and Cross Cut & Micro to get the pieces super small. Check out this video where she shows her new shredder crush a super long piece of cardboard: ruclips.net/video/ZXdvqGa4X6s/видео.html It is somewhere around the 5 minute mark. I hope this helps!! Mine has been shredding cardboard for 3 1/2 years and paper before that for 1 1/2 years.🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost I actually have a 12 sheet Amazon shredder, but was too afraid to try cardboard. I might give it a shot. PS I think you linked the same thing twice instead of a video.
Oops!! You're right, I fixed the link but here it is as well: ruclips.net/video/ZXdvqGa4X6s/видео.html It took me 1 1/2 years before I got up the guts to shred cardboard so I understand your apprehension!! But if it is a 12 sheet shredder it will eat through it better than if you put 12 sheets through it at once as demoed in this video of me doing both: ruclips.net/video/rRXWtNT9PSo/видео.html Hopefully that is a good link😂🤣😂
@@Vermicompost I just tried it and it shreds it just fine. The problem is that if I open the cover too much, there's a safety disable switch. So it's not easy to feed the cardboard. Going to figure out a way to disable the disable switch.
Yes! The compost worms ate the lemons! I usually don't give them a whole lot of lemons or other citrus at a time, but they do eat it! My bins are big enough that if I put in a food they can't eat due to pH, heat or other factors, they have room to avoid it until the microbes breakdown enough to allow the worms to eat it. I think people give advice about forbidden foods because they are afraid folks will overfeed that particular food which can cause a bin to ferment or give off ammonia. Worms will eat just about anything that was once alive in moderation. Here is a video I did on forbidden foods: ruclips.net/video/gewt_og8EfQ/видео.html Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Yes! You should start a worm bin for sure! But you could also bury your food scraps in your garden, and the worms will come and get them and make great fertilizer for your garden. Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I just got word my half pound and 500 euros are on the way the gf has a huge cucumber in the bin for a week already lol we won’t feed for a few months I bet lol
500 Euros..What a great start for your worm bin!! They'll come with some instructions I'm sure, but be sure to rehydrate them with a little sprinkle of water after you put them in and if you have a lid keep it off in a well lighted room for the first 48 hours or more to get them settled...sorry if you already know this, I just get excited when I hear about a new worm bin getting started!! Cucumber is a great fast food to get them started, especially if the skin is broken for easy access. I bet after 5-7 days they'll have a good portion of it gone!! Thanks so much for watching and letting us know about your 500 ENCs on the way!!🪱🪱🪱

Believe it or not there is a method to my madness😂 I just use a glove on my right hand because that’s the hand that typically digs into the bin & my dirty finger nails don’t look very good on camera to me. I usually only hold things or pick up things with my left hand so no need for a glove as the finger nails stay clean on that hand. I also figured I'd save more gloves that way! I have no issues getting my bare hands into the worm bin when I'm not filming, it is just for aesthetics on videos!! Great question, I know it looks odd to wear just one when my left hand gets dirty anyway😂 Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks. I’m gonna start harvesting my castings. They have been working for me for almost a year. I don’t think that anyone else harvests without removing everything.
I bet you have some amazing castings!! Harvesting this bin every time I feed or at least every couple of weeks has really worked well for me! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch and tell us about your worm bin & castings!!🪱🪱🪱

Definitely not good for human consumption!! If I had to do life all over again I would never have eaten it as a kid or fed it to my own!! However, I don't mind getting rid of what is left via my compost worms as they are used to detoxify soil with way more toxic chemicals in them!! Worms are amazing!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Here's how I start off my bins with some strawberry tops to find out if & how much they are eating: ruclips.net/video/1IRP-Nu6_90/видео.html Measuring the weight of food can be useful as you work your way up to more food to find out how much they eat and prevent overfeeding. Of course as the worms increase in population you'll find they eat more, but measuring the food can be a useful tool to help for sure! I've heard that body weight a day rule of thumb or even 1/2 their body weight a day thrown around but that has not been the reality I experience with my compost worms. It is probably more like a quarter of that. They also eat more in the summer than the winter and a newer bin will eat less than a more "seasoned" bin full of microbes. The worms eat the bedding as well so that would have to factored in...And if we feed once a week versus once a month or bi monthly getting the amount wrong can really turn into a fermented or even worse ammonia filled mess as any overfeeding situation would be in there for a while! And of course some food they eat quicker than others so a good mix is important. When starting a worm bin, I've found starting with less food than I think, then seeing how the worms do after 5-7 days and slowly working my way up making sure they've eaten almost all the food each time, until I get to the point where I have a good handle on how much they can eat serves me well. If I see they seem to be eating more food I test their boundaries to find their limit. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and bring up a great point about feeding our worm bins!!🪱🪱🪱

😂 My inner "middle schooler" came out on that one!! Thanks for the good chuckle and thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Does the coffee have to be used or can they be right out of container?
Used is best...brewing it helps to take out the acidity or make it a more neutral pH, however I have used fresh coffee grounds in small amounts and never had any issues! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Jamee!!🪱🪱🪱
When you pointed out that you said "doo doo".... I HOLLERED!!!! Because I said the same thing when you said it! I love it!

I love your time lapse video of the worms added to the bin. It's fun to see them work their way down into their home!
I just started my first worm bin today, I've found your videos very entertaining and informative! Keep it up :)

Awesome video. Full of great information! You got a new subscriber! 👊🏾
Thank you!! I appreciate the great feedback and the sub! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch & comment!!🪱🪱🪱
I really like the you parameters are directly tied to the micro herd in your bins. Worms don't eat the food, the microherd does, if there isn't a sufficient population, anerobes will explode !!
Btw I have no idea what I just said is true 🤣
Might be a good worban legend topic though lol
Cheers Brother

Well if it was a batting average it would be really good!! Worms eat the food...and the microbes that are all over them but get most of their nutrients from the microbes...not too far from what our micro biomes in out guts do for us! Wow that is a big feeding! Very important info about the microbes and the importance of the age of your bin. Did it heat up?

They will get it done 👍🏼🪱😁

since you harvest every time you get in there do you use the casting right away or fill up a bin

Nice Patrick, super big feeding. And huge boost of volume with the shredded cardboard. I haven’t come across black solider fly larvae. Glad you shared you will be adding water to the bin. I’m leaning towards this feeding heating up for you. 😁🪱🪱
Operation frozen water bottles and ice lasted two days🤣😂🤣 But, the volume is way up!! Thanks so much for dropping in to watch Rick!!🪱🪱🪱
I can hear you saying their line "I'm going to pump you up!"
I think one of the signs/dangers of overfeeding is other bin critters get a chance to move in and multiply in larger numbers.

Good morning Patrick ❤
I'm still picking out Worms from Jill's Southside and moving them to the Northside.
@@Vermicompost Thank you.
Welcome Türkiye 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Thanks for watching all the way from Türkiye!! I enjoyed my time there, such a beautiful country, wonderful people and the food was absolutely amazing!!🪱🪱🪱 🇹🇷🇺🇸
Is there a reason why you remove the soldier fly larvae?
For all I know they might already be there but so far I have not seen any
I think that the one caveat to what you said at @06:30 .... is that certain foods will remain as leftovers & take a really, really long time to get eaten by the worms.
I like having the black soldier flies in my outdoor systems but not in my indoor systems :) As for whether they are good for fishing... I do not know
Good advice, give your bin some time to build the proper attmosphere and numbers to increase the feedings.

Do you buy shredded cardboard? If you shred them, how are you doing it?
@@Vermicompost I just tried it and it shreds it just fine. The problem is that if I open the cover too much, there's a safety disable switch. So it's not easy to feed the cardboard. Going to figure out a way to disable the disable switch.
😂🤣😂 Disable the disable switch...sounds like trouble!!
Did the worms eat the lemon? I read that citrus fruits burn them, and they prefer corn etc. That my just be one guy's opinion, however.

Is there a reason you wear a glove on one hand but not the other?
Believe it or not there is a method to my madness😂 I just use a glove on my right hand because that’s the hand that typically digs into the bin & my dirty finger nails don’t look very good on camera to me. I usually only hold things or pick up things with my left hand so no need for a glove as the finger nails stay clean on that hand. I also figured I'd save more gloves that way! Use math.... a worm eats his bodyweight a Day.
So 1 kilo of worms is 1 kilo of food?

That was an interesting time for sure, bad luck with the air conditioner breaking at the same time as I built a little food compost pile in my bin!! I was amazed to see the worms form a heat temperature ring right where they couldn't tolerate it! Thank so much for dropping in to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
