I have an original press of South African trumpet player Hugh Masekela’s ‘Home Is Where The Music Is’ and it’s a Jazz masterpiece!! ‘Techno-Bush’ is also in the collection because it has his great 1984 hit “Don’t Go Lose It Baby” on it. Another tip is the BBE compilation ‘The Chisa Years 1965 - 1975’ which explores his work for other artists, including Letta Mbulu. Albums on my wantlist are ‘The Boys Doin’ It’ and ‘You Told Your Mama Not To Worry’. What a legend! R.I.P. 1939-2018

I like the addition of these videos. In my mind it is something in a way similar to the a-side/b-side in terms of album recommendations and turning others towards new music to seek out.

Love that Etta James! I saw her live a few times over the years and she was so raw and dynamic!!! Such a great variety of records...It's such a treat when you do these videos. I check out the stuff I haven't heard of before to see if there is anything I like. Keep up the great work, Matt!!!

Check out “Hope” from Hugh Masekela. You WILL be floored. Very hard to get on vinyl, but streaming or CD is fine.

I could collect nothing but funk/soul! Here are few newer groups/pressings/labels you need to check out: Lee Fields - Big Crown, Bastards of Soul - Eastwood Music Group/Josey Records, Chris Lujan & Electric Butter - Lungnut Brand Records, Funknight Label, Penrose Label and of course Colemine Records. Just a few off the top of my head, so much more killer new stuff out there! Thank You Matt

Love seeing some soul and funk up in here! The Mofi Superfly is a bit to bright and boomy to my ears whereas the Run Out Groove/Kevin Gray cut is silky smooth and with all the extras it's a great value. Cheers!

Hugh Masekela is famous for Bajabula Bonke (The Healing Song), performed at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967. A lot of his albums are commonly found, but Hedzoleh is definitely tough to find, great starting point!

That was fun. Gonna check out some of those I haven’t heard. I’m ashamed to admit I also don’t own Superfly on vinyl. It’s an amazing album but I just never grabbed it. I should rectify that.
Glad you brought home Standing On The Verge. Such a brilliant Funkadelic record.

FYI The Twilight Singers boxset is being released on One Little Indian Records in October. It is super pricey but the content is going to be amazing. Its a UK release only as well no US production planned. Check it out

Killer selection, Matt! When I saw that Baden Powell record I almost fainted. Beautiful stuff. You also can't go wrong with Maya Rudolph's mum (Minnie Riperton). Check out her band, Rotary Connection, too.
About your Funkadelic shoot-out: I love showing analogue and digitally sourced versions of the same album to friends and invite them to decide which they prefer - it's almost always the analogue one. They usually can't put into words why, and I only tell them which is which after the fact. So there really is something to differences in various pressings that even a casual listener can pick up easily.
I have a few 4 Men With Beards reissues (The Velvet Underground's 2nd album, a few Serge Gainsbourg records and Herbie Hancock's score to Antonioni's Blow-Up) and I'm happy with all of them. I think if you do an A-B shootout with originals, they'd probably come out the loser, but their catalogue is so varied and runs so deep that most of the originals you might never find. I have yet to actually see the effect of all that shittalking about 4MWB reissues' quality on their prices :)

I think this is one of my favorite videos you've done! I really love the variety of albums you show and you kept so much incredible stuff, can't blame you!! Nothing can beat the original Highway Star for me, but that IS a killer cover 😃⚡🤘🏽

Interestingly enough, the majority of original Hysteria presses were in fact a single disc. It wasn’t until the remasters that they started putting them on two.
I’ll never not be amazed that the theme song of Big Mouth is a Sabbath original, truly mind blowing

Hilarious coincidence, I was listening to City of Evil as I scrolled on Instagram and saw your post. By far my favorite A7X album.
Misfits comp is a great one to have! I highly recommend EvilIve, pressings are usually cheap and easy to come by. It’s Misfits in their rawest, most punk form. And the Henry Rollins guest vocal on We are 138 is kick ass! 🤘🏼

Really like the Nightmare album by Avenged Sevenfold. Was the first record after their original drummer passed away and has Mike Portnoy playing drums on it.

Oh yes- Etta James. My favourite female singer. Gonna look out for that reissue if it appears here in the UK. Charles Bradley and the Olympians are excellent -Daptone has to be my favourite label at the moment! You’re not on your own as I too only recently discovered Superfly, it just awesome. My eyes are peeled for a early press of that. A great haul you got there Matt !

I have a regular old OG Hysteria and I still think it sounds really good, despite the amount of music crammed onto both sides. Definitely better than some other 80s pressings I have of shorter albums

Got to disagree about 4 Men With Beards. Found a copy of the first Funkadelic album by them at Goodwill for $2. The pressing was so horrible I couldn’t keep it, even for $2. Check out Hugh Masekela’s 1966 Next Album or Alive & We’ll at The Whiskey from 1967.

I agree that specific pressing sounds rough, especially after A-B testing it with an original, but Verge sounds clean and solid. Again, I'll take an original any day of the week, but 4MWB has had more hits than misses for me.

14:19 PWEI. Back in the 80ies they called this style "Grebo Rock" - I dont know if this ever got an official term.
Lot of sampling, but also lots of guitars, Pop/Rock-Appeal, generally fast tempo. And more british music than american.
    I recommend
Age Of Chance - 1000 Years Of Trouble (1987) (classic)
    Jesus Jones - Liquidizer (1989)
Pop Will Eat itself - Cure For Sanity (1990) (I think they lost it somehow after this)
Nasty Rox Inc. - Escape From New York (1988)
