Motorola Defy Satellite Link Review in Southern Utah's San Rafael Swell

- I have been looking for a satellite communication device for a while now and finally decided to purchase the Motorola Defy. It allows for text messaging when out of cell range, and we tested it out in South Eastern Utah in the San Rafael Swell.

One of the reasons I went with the Defy is the cost. It is much cheaper than the Garmin InReach or the Zoleo devices. When I purchased it, it also came with a year of messages. Pretty good deal.
What I wasn't sure about, however, is how well it worked. During this test, I used it while hiking in canyons as well as open areas, and I had a good signal the whole time. I was able to get multiple messages out and received the responses without difficulty.
If you are going into the backcountry, some type of communication device I think is very helpful. The Motorola Defy seems to be as advertised and I would recommend it.

It is all the more perfect that you're not a tech guy providing this review, so that those of us who are also not tech people can determine whether or not it's easy enough to use.

I just purchase one today. Can I use this in conjunction with my mobile phone and text back n' forth with my family or is this unit only capable of "checking in" with that push of a button you show in the video?
You can text back and forth but it is in the Bullitt app. Good luck!
Your family has to have the app to reply, and you have to have the subscription that allows for you to send messages (on your end)

Yes! I have used it a few more times and will be using it backpacking this weekend.
